Hi all - this poem was in the book that I just finished reading "Ice Bound," by Jerri Neilsen. She's the doctor who found out she had breast cancer while she was in Antarctica. I think it's a nice poem and thought I would share. The author is Veronica Shoffstall and the poem is called "After A While."

    After a while you learn
    the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
    and you learn
    that love doesn't mean leaning
and company doesn't always mean security.
    And you begin to learn
    that kisses aren't contracts
    and presents aren't promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child
    and you learn
to build all your roads on today
    because tomorrow's ground is
    too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down
    in mid-flight.
    After a while you learn
    that even sunshine burns
    if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
    and decorate your own soul
    instead of waiting for someone
    to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure,
    you really are strong
and you really do have worth
    and you learn
    and you learn
    with every goodbye, you learn...

One of the things we learn is this life is that it sometimes takes repeated
effort to get a reply button.

Anyhoo, if you like this poet, you might also like Judith Viorst. Did I
write to you about her before? Unlike most authors, she writes in more
than one genre. Her verses come in slim volumes w/ provocative titles like:

I'm Too Young to be 70 and Other Delusions.

How Did I Get to be 40 and Other Atrocities.

It WAS a great story wasn't it? She was a great writer. I felt as if I was right there with her.

Thank you so much for your kind thoughts. I must say I'm a little nervous. I watched part of video about the type of surgery I'm having (it's done robotically with "da Vinci" system). There's this huge robot that will be hovering over my body - it looks like I'm going through a car wash!! :)

I made my husband promise to get on the board using my name to let everyone know how it goes.

    Thanks again - Jan

Thank you for your good wishes. I'm having a (potentially cancerous) cyst removed from my kidney. They'll be doing a partial nephrectomy. I'm getting kind of nervous about the surgery. It's supposed to take about 4 hours. That's the longest surgery I've ever had.

My rheumatologist thinks that the kidney problems I've been having MAY be partially responsible for the increased pain I've been having since last November. I hope she's right!
