If it is an acute (sudden) injury, I suggest ice. Sounds like you may have pinched your sciatic nerve (hence the pain down you leg). Ice always helped me, so I would try that route first.

With your back, you always need to be aware of the symptoms of a serious injury. If you have any trouble starting or stopping urinating, fever, loss of feeling, etc., you need to go right away to doctor, or ER.

    Good luck.

Yes, ice for the first 24-hours and lie down with a pillow under your knees. Take aspirin if you can. I'd go to my chiro but I don't know if you have one or want to try it.

Always be sure you bend your knees when you lift anything, no matter how small.

Good luck. Back pain is rough on top of everything else and as inactive as we usually are, we're candidates.
