I just found out my cat Joey who is only two and a half years old has an enlarged heart. The vet things it is some heart defect he was born with and he said he will probably only live another six monthes to a year if we are lucky. He is on two kinds of medicine I have to give him twice a day.

I am pretty sad, he`s such a funny unique pet. I was wondering if any of you have had this happen to any of your pets? If so was there anything that you found helped? I was reading about fish oil sometimes helping. I am going to take him to another vet and get another opinion also.

Thank you for your reply and the information you found for me. No, the cat in my profile picture is Boots(6 month old kitten) I have. The vet said the heart failure Joey has is very rare in cats. I am sure going to go to probably a couple more vets to get a second and a third opinion.

Joey is such a character and just enjoy him so much. I hope I can find something that can save him. If not, I`ll just have to grateful for the time I had with him. I just don`t want him to suffer. He is feeling better right now on the heart and diuretic meds he is on. So, that`s a good thing.

I am so sorry about your kitty being sick.

    I didn't have a sick cat, but a puppy.

We got a puppy and the first trip to the vet he said she had a heart defect. She could have surgery, but had to be at least 8 months old to be able to survive the surgery and it would cost at least 1,000 dollars.

I would have done what I could for her, but she went into renal heart failure at 5 months and didn't make it.

She was such a bright funny little pup that it makes me sad to think she was just so young, but took comfort in knowing she had a great home while she was with us.

I hope they can find something to help your kitty. I do think you should find a specialist or someone that has a lot of experience. Is there a vet college near you? That is where they send the extreme cases where I live.

Our furbabies are so important to us!!

Best to you and your little one!

I went to another doctor to get a second opinion. He was surprised that Joey had been that sick a week ago and now looks so good already. He doesn`t think his heart or lungs sounds very bad. He thinks he had an episode with his heart but heat it was a temperory thing, infection or something like that.

He did do some blood work and the only thing that was obnormal was that he was anemic. So, I started him on meds for that. The nurse said the anemia medicine tastes really bad and he would probably hate it. But he loves it, licks it off the dropper. I put some in a dish and he licked it right up. He must be really craving some iron to do that.

I am puzzled. THe first vet said he is dying and the other said he wasn`t. I guess I really do need a third opinion to confuse me some more.

Anywasy, he is taking his medicine really good and feeling like his old ornery self. Thank you for you kind words. I keep you updated when I find something new out.
