I recently had an overnight sleep study with results showing that I have 0% stage 3 & 4 sleep. The sleep dr., a pulmonologist, said that this is out of his field and referred me back to my primary. My primary has prescribed Elavil. I don't mind trying it, but I don't believe that it will really do the job. Dr. Nancy Klimas has written that Xyrem is best for inducing stage 3 & 4 sleep. Has anyone used Xyrem or had positive results with the class of anti-depressants that Elavil is in?

I had two sleep studies. Although the second was a little better than the first, I had under 4 minutes of stage 3/4 sleep the entire night for the first.

I have tried Xyrem for a couple of months. Does it increase 3/4? I'd say, definitely YES in my case. It takes a while to titrate and get used to, and you may also need another medication to get you into sleep as well, but I had NO, repeat NO, NADA, ZILCH, ZIP daytime sleepiness when I was on a proper dose of Xyrem. It was amazing.

The unamazing part was that the dose I needed to get that sleep was just too close to the dose that made my stomach upset, so I had to stop. But my prescription is temporarily suspended (by me), and I can go back on it if I decide to return to it.

The important thing is to educate yourself about what this medication does or doesn't do and find a doctor that is experienced in prescribing it. The pharmacy also offers good support as well.

I showed 0% REM, continuous Alpha Intrusive, constant muscular tremor, and a few other things my brain didn't process during the appointment. No sign of sleep apnea, though.

I've been from the sleep clinic that did the original tests, to a specialist in the field, and I'm now being referred to a Chronobiologist that specializes in sleep/wake disorders. In the mean time, it's been over a year and a half that all this testing and consulting has been going on - and STILL no one has put me on any medications to significantly improve my quality of sleep, because they have no clue what they're treating.

Since before any testing was ever done though, I have taken Elavil [Amitriptyline] 70mg at night, along with 100mg Cyclobenzaprine, 100mg Demerol, 100mg Benedryl Night time and whatever else "may cause drowsiness" to help me get my staggered 3 or 4 hours of sleep. I haven't had any negative results, but I can't really say I've had much of a positive result from them, either. Everything just seems a little more serene right before bed.
