ANYONE HAVE TROUBLE SWALLOWING?

Perhaps when I am thinking I will have trouble swallowing it gets worse, but I seem to have real problems swallowing lettuce, apples, spaghetti, chopped spinach, pills. I am getting to eating mush! I do have bad chewing due to grinding teeth, but I even choked on apple sauce the other day. It doesn't always happen. Just some days.

Is this yet another FM thing, or just over thinking about swallowing?

I have an anxiety disorder, and the first thing that happens is that I start breathing faster and then can't swallow...even saliva. It is very scary. I have to sit and think, calm down, suck on something to keep my mouth moist, and then take an med if it keeps up.

I hate the feeling, and although it isn't a daily thing, and it has gotten better, not worse, it is scary.

I don't know about being an FM thing...it may be anxiety and thinking about it may not help. I don't know. Hope someone else has an idea. This is just my experience with this problem.

    Blessings,
    Sue

I think its FM.Just today I tried something. The pills had been hanging there for hours.I rubbed the area just above my breasts and it seemed to loosen the muscles.Anyway, the pills went down right away!

    Hi Anne,
Is this something that has recently started and is getting progressive/worse?
Or something you've always had to deal with?
Not that I know anything about this,(grandmother had it) but please ask the doc. to omit it possibly being ALS, a form of Muscular Dystrophy affecting the throat/swallowing & later talking - a/k/a (Lou Gerrigs disease).

    Hope and Peace, Lori

If what you are experiencing is what I had a few years ago, drinking Noni Juice helped a great deal. I would be in a resturant, and choke on the smallest piece of food, many times I would stop eating and take my food home.

But the Noni Juice helped with those throat problems (it was spasms), BUT I also get terribly bad with just eating if I am stressed out, that is what has been happening to me lately, its caused me to lose 31 pounds by not eating, I am down to 96 pounds right now from stress, anxiety, etc. Not a good weight for someone 5'5"!

Do try and find out what is causing your problem, I know what my problem is, just can't fix myself right now.

Yes, it seems a lot of people with FM has this problem, so you are not alone.

Take care of yourself and let us know how you are doing.

Yes, off and on. Especially with the pills I take in the morning. They seem to lodge somewhere halfway down my back. I try to force them down with water when they're stuck, taking a good, strong gulp. A couple weeks ago that didn't work, and I passed out. Luckilly, woke up again. Passing out can relax the muscles around where the stuff is blocked. Never going to let it come to that again! I swallow them two or three at a time now, and wait between swallows to make sure they have gone down all the way before taking the next ones.

The last two evenings, I've had a hard time swallowing water. Hurts, but I can get it down.

Anyone know what makes it hard to swallow?
    ((thanks)) Shannon

It was on & off too but my doc did want me to have a barium swallow to check it out. The day of the test I was having trouble and the test picked it up (the pill they had me take got stuck & than went down very slowly). I was sent to the hospital to have them put the camera down my throat & check it out - it was narrow but they couldn't find a reason why - they dilated my esophagus and it felt better for a few weeks but difficulty swallowing returned. I could've gone back to get it dilated again but chose not to. The problem went away on its own - I rarely experience it now. AMY

It has been going on for years on and off, at least three years. I will try the noni juice. I recall your post about choking. I do the same thing, take my food home on the rare occasions we eat out(MIL treat for me normally) and I end u gving the food to DH who says he has gained 12lb! I will also try the massage. I do also agree it could be anxiety that sets up the spasm (and hopefully not Lou Gherigs)or anticipating I will choke. I do try and take pills using a water bottle as swallowing from a bottle is supposed to make it easier.

What is noni juice and where can I acquire some? Food co-op?

... that every three years I have Upper endoscopy due to reflux disease and I do feel things are easier after that. Terribly fogged up today and head like a piece of lead. Whoosh.

I had GERD/reflux/heartburn for almost 20 years. By the time I got an upper endoscopy, I was having trouble swallowing..things would just get stuck and stay there for a while. very irritating to say the least.

Once I had the endoscopy they found where the reflux had scarred my esophagus and there was a stricture of scar tissue. They dilated it and put me on Prilosec and that worked great. I later found out some foods that were largely responsible for the GERD and it's managed without meds, however I may need to go in every few years to get the stricture re-dilated.

I ended up having tests done and was diagnosed with diffuse esophogeal spasms.

    Sometimes its worse than others.

The doctor said sometimes its treated with Reglan, but I can't take that. We tried an anti-biotic (even though theres not infection) that helps this. Valium also is used as a muscle relaxer. That actually helped the most but I discontinued it because it made me even more lethargic than usual. I need more energy, not less!

I THINK IT PROBABLY IS CONNECTED WITH THE GERD, ALTHOUGH I TAKE PRILOSEC AND IT'S BEEN OK.

WAKE, THANKS FOR THE LONG NOTES. ALL MADE SENSE. I LOL'D ABOUT THE LETTUCE INCIDENT, SORRY, AS I ONCE BURPED AND PUFFED WHEAT CAME WHIZZING OUT OF MY MOUTH AND SHOT ACROSS THE ROOM FROM EATING IT ONE HOUR PREVIOUSLY)

I SEE ENT NEXT WEEK SO I'LL ASK IF HE CAN CHECK THE THROAT. I KNOW I GET THE ESOPHAGEAL SPASMS. REGLAN DID WORK WELL FOR THAT BUT GAVE ME LEAKEY BREASTS. CANNOT WIN! MAYBE I'LL GO BACK ON THE 2mg Valium as I have not been sleeping well since I came off it. The good news is-my legs feel a ton better.

iT WAS YEARS AGO THE REGLAN. tHANX i KNOW IT IS NOT TOO SAFE-NOW-DIDN'T THEN. iN FACT i ENDED UP HAVING AN mri FOR pITUARY TUMOR, BUT IT WAS JUST THE REGLAN THAT HAD MADE IT APPEAR LIKE A TUMOR, STOPPED THE REGLAN PITUARY WENT BACK TO NORMAL.

iT SURE WORKED ON THE REFLUX THOUGH. tHEN TOOK pROPULSID THAT ALMOST KILED ME-ENDED UP IN HEART UNIT-i WISH NOW i HAD JOINED THE LAW SUIT, BUT i DIDN'T. tHIS IS WHY i AVOID PILLS LIKE THE PLAGUE THESE DAYS, OF COURSE i HAVE THE OPTION TOO, AS NOTHING i HAVE SEEMS LIFE THREATENING, JUST FEELS THAT WAY LOL

I can submit something for your consideration on the teeth grinding. I had toget a nite guard for my teeth grinding,It helps. You can buy them at CVS or another drug store froaround 25.00. Wish I knew that before I soent 300.00 for one from my dentist.

The swallowing part. Have you seen an ear nose and
    throat specialist?

    Hi Anne,
I have had trouble swallowing for the last 5 or 6 years. So much so, that when we are eating out somewhere, if I cough even slightly, my husband will give me that horrified look like "No not here". He better count his blessings that I don't have the energy to knock him our!

There are times when I'm not even eating and I will get spasm in my throat. What helps me the most ar this time is to hold my head back as far as I can, then I will hear a sound like liguid draining and slowly feel the muscles relax. I have no idea what the noise is.

I am seeing an ENT next week, so I will let you know how it goes. Just knowing this isn't JUST ME helps. I know what you mean about eating out. I was having canned pears for desert tonight at home and had to reach down my throat and haul out the stringy bits, imagine doing that at some posh restaurant....wait a minute-since when did we have money to eat at posh restaurant (LOL) I did steam some apples and find I can eat them steamed which doesn't rob too much nutrient value.

I recall my sister years ago kept having throat spasms. Gee I have to get off boards now, for some reason my arms and hands feel as if I have polio or something.

Re night guard: I gag with them, but seeing dentist tomorrow as there is a new permanet clip they can imbed in the tooth that flicks forward and holds mouth apart one eighth inch-that may work.

    My darn hands.
