ARE THE DOC'S UNDER P.P.O. PLANS BETTER THAN THE DOC'S UNDER H.M.O'S?

Just curious as to if people have better luck with the ones under the P.P.O. plans.
Do they take better care of you, spend more time with you,
    are more knowledgeable?

    THANKS

Usually the same doctors take people on all kinds of plans. You may have a PPO, but if many of the docs other patients have HMO's then he has to jump when they tell him to,and you won't get any more time than the HMO patients. IMO, managed care has ruined medicine.

On the plan and on the doc. The difference is basically whether preventive care is worth giving up some of your freedom of choice. HMO's do limit the time docs can spend with their patients and they have other ways of rewarding and punishing the docs. It can affect your quality of care. On the other hand, HMO's are very good at preventive care.

I've got H.M.O. too, that's why I'm curious about these "other" plans. I've often wondered what was going into my files so I recently requested copies of them and am eagerly awaiting them. I've also been going 'round and 'round with the doctors on tests they've been giving me; I often feel like they're not the right ones. I know they view me as a "Royal Pain in the Butt", but,I don't care.....

HMOs are for people who are literally never ill. PPOs are for people with chronic illness, like us. It's not that the doctors are any better---many are the same ones-- but under a PPO, the same doctor is allowed to actually listen to you. Also, as Jelly said, with a PPO, you can see a specialist without a referral---which you will seldom get from your HMO PCP unless you are laying on the floor hemorrhaging...

    PPO's, HMO's,

    IMO,

it's all a bunch of bull.

I feel I'm still sick because of my HMO,

    That's right, I said it,

    because I know it's so.

Now all this talk just made me PO'd.

Part two of my poem/rap/whatever you want to call it...

    I have to get reminded
    almost everytime I go,
    that my PCP
    happens to be an HMO

As I beg and beg for tests
and referrals on which to go,
It's as if it's tattooed on her forehead
    "Hey, Im an HMO."

No matter how much info I give her
and all the things I've come to know,
she still comes off like I'm crazy
    'cos she's an HMO!

But having to find another doctor
    is growing pretty old,
because they won't take new patients
    "Go back to your HMO!"

So I'm saving up my money
for the tests that may help me so,
    who knows someday soon
    I may hit the L-O-T-T-O!!

I have BC/BS HMO and have never had a problem with them (maybe I had better knock on wood). My PCP is great and I have never had a referral refused, even to the plastic surgeon.
