Can any one suggest the best type of doctor to go to for FM? I have been to my regular doctor, orthopedic doctor, nurologist, oral surgeon when my TMJ is so bad. Each doctor gives really no suggestions other then sleep, reduce stress. I have recently moved from FL to PA and the pain in my body seems 10x worse. Any one else have problems with the weather?

Sorry you have FMS and yes the weather makes my symptoms a lot worse. It does help to reduce stress and to take care of sleep issues.

I see a D.O. Doctor of Osteopathy -- she is a godsend. It was a D.O. that first diagnosed me with FMS.

She believes in FMS and treats appropriately with pain control and recommended exercise because if you do not move FMS will be a lot worse -- well it is for me any way. It took me a long time to figure that out.

She [the D.O.] also treats with these wonderful hot packs that cover my entire back when I have a real bad flare -- they're great.

She evens treats my endocrine problems better than an endocrinologist frankly she is an excellent physician and I am very lucky.

I hope you find a good physician,

    Karen :)

Hi welcome to PA and the wonderful wacky weather of PA!!!

Anyway, I have given up on the Rheumatologist in PA, to me they don't know how to help a fibro suffer

I have tried every type of doc too. My PCP at least believes in FMS and CFS and is willing to listen to me, and try different things to relieve some of the symptoms.

If you want his name, post here.

I am fortunate my docs are all good. My top 3 are my rheum. gp. and pain guy. I really like the team approach and they are all the top in my city. That makes me feel good. Weather changes are a given. I can tell it better than the weather man.

welcome to "STEELER COUNTRY"!! (or are you on the other side??) I have had the best luck with pain specialists, but that is tricky to find one that nows and treats fibro. They will say that they do, but you have to find out their treatment plan, BUT on the other hand, if you ask too much, they think you are drug seeking.

We also have had our share of the "drug drive thru's", where the docs were arrested for handing out pills like candy, no exams, cash only. They have ruined it for the honest doctor and patient!I guess the best way is to ask people that have been to them, post what part of the state you came too (the weather is going to be UPHILL from now on--spring is here, ask the groundhog!!)

Alot of people will tell you to go to the big city hospitals where they have teaching hospitals and studies, but i have been treated so badly by docs down in pittsburgh! I'm sure there are good ones there, but the ones i was referred to were awful, insulting, degrading, ignorant of the illness, etc.

good luck, hope you find someone good

I would like to thank you all for the info you gave to me. I live in Quakertown, PA Bucks County. I really hate the thought of starting this process all over again. Most doctors cannot connect my symtoms and give me names of 20 different ailments that I could have. They want a whole battery of test and then when nothing major shows up they think it is either depression or else in your head.

My thought is calling the hospitals and asking for a referral to a doctor that treats FM.

Rheumys are "supposed" to be the specialists who treat FM; however, you may find that your GP or Internist is just as knowledgeable about FM. It all depends upon the individual doctor and his/her interests, I think!

Good luck in finding a good doc!

The best type of dr is one who listens when you talk and understands that your in pain and gives you lots of good meds so is lessens the pain or you just plain forget about it. My family dr is the one who helped me but i went through bout 15 family physicians before i found her and i am so thankful to have her. I have heard that an arthritis specialist might be a good place to start

My gp is the best all of these specialist did nothing but really there is nothing they can do except take your money!I just go to my gp,she is so supportive and understanding and that is so important with this illness, all of the rheumies and neuro just wanted to give me strong drugs that kept me out of it.My advice is stick with the one you are most comfortable with.
