Does anyone know how much it costs to be examined by a rhuematologist? I belong to an HMO and I am not having any success with my Dr. he blames my symptoms on one thing or another mainly stress. I have to be referred to a specialist. I thought I would go to a rheumatologist on my own and bring his findings to my Dr. I found one in my area but I am just curious about the cost. Please let me know if you know. Thanks.

Chances are if your doc isn't willing to refer you, he is paid on a capitation basis and he has to pay for your specialist out of his monthly allotment. Tell him you will be finding another PCP if he won't give you the referral. That will stop his income from you as a patient.

The other possibility is that he is afraid he'll lose his bonus by saving the plan less money if he refers. Ask him how he is compensated. By law, he must tell you. You can also complain about him to the plan and complain about the plan to the insurance commissioner's office. Go one step at a time.
