Could Not Believe What Bone Scan Tech Told Me

I recently had a bone scan for a hip problem. The tech asked me some questions ahead of time. She said do you have any other pain besides the pain in your hip? I told her I had FM. Then she said "FM is nothing! That is just a catch all name that is used when doctor's do not know what else to tell you." I told her I had this pain since 1988 so whether it is called FM or something else it is pain and it is not in my head. I still cannot believe she would say this.

    Myajenna,

I am sorry the Tech told you that! Some people are just plain mean....I sure hope she doesn't have to someday cope with chronic pain...although it would serve her right, but I would not wish any illness on anyone.
It is not in our heads......and we do not need to convince anyone....someday they will find out all about these DD's....soon I hope..

How is your hip? Hope you are feeling better. I have hip pain also along with many other pains that are in my "head".Ha, Ha....
    Bless you,
    Cindy

I would definatly report her to a hospital administrator.

What she said was out of line. She is suppose to be a professional. She is not a doctor...she is a tech. She is not an expert and should keep her comments on your condition to herself.

Some people are very sensitive so I think people...especially professionals should watch what they say.

Just because she does not believe in Fibro doesnt mean that she has the right to comment on it.

    Report her for sure!

    Hugs,
    Stephanie

Report her sorry "butt". That is just terrible and I had experienced that before with a Radiologist Technician. My suggestion and what I did. Tell your doctor about this and immediatley sit down and write some notes so that you won't forget anything. Write down the date, day and the time you went for testing and of course the hospital. If you don't know her name call the hospital administrator and find out.

Always find out the name of the person that you are speaking with along with the date and time and whatever this person says to you. Also ask them what their position is.

So that you don't have to become a "pariot" and repeat yourself over and over, kindly ask for hospital Administrator and their name. You will probably reach their secretary first and ask you why you want to speak to the Administrator. All you have to tell them is you have a complaint to bring to the hospitals attention. Call, call and call until you reach them and then follow-up with a letter and this will go into the tech's personnel file. She deserves it.

Keep your notes near your phone so that you won't have to be searching for them when you finally get a call back. This way the hospital will know how serious this is, that one of their employees have emotionally hurt you and this is not to be taken lightly.

This will take energy and time if you go forward.

    All the best,

    Eileen

It's bad enough we suffer with these dd's, then we go for a test and we have to hear some moron's 2 cents...Don't they know when to shut their trap and JUST do their job...

You MUST report this cause I am sure she must have done this before and gotten the same response of disgust but it seems she wasn't reported cause she did it to you...

I was just looking at GeorgiaC's new photo and I mentioned that that is what should be done to the tech you had as well as everyone who doesn't understand those who suffer with these dd's...

Why do we continually have to prove our illnesses to people?

I say SMACK em all!!! I am sure EVERYONE in the world would get that part of the illness...We can then call it "THE SMACKING DISEASE"...And get away with it too...tehe

Hope you gain the strength to report her and if you can get a smack in too, that would be a plus...Try not to waste anymore energy on the thought of what she said...After all, morons know not what they do...

    Peaceful days ahead~Alicia

Turn her in .I agree with others here she should be turned in to the Administrator and your Doctor.

Se is not a doctor and had no right to comment on anything you tell her.All she should do is write it in your file.

Please do not let this pass .Do turn her in.We need to stand up for ourselves.

I am so sorry this happened to you.I do not know how you held back.

The hospital I went to always sends out a survey to ask how our experience was with the test we had. I will make sure I answer this survey when it comes.

It would do no good to tell the doctor. He was almost as bad. He is a specialist. He did not even want to do a bone scan. I asked him for one. He said I only had bursitis. I told him I have had it for over a year. He said I needed PT. I told him my regular doctor all ready sent me to that for months. He told me I needed meds. I told him I did that too. He told me I should not sit, exercise or walk up stairs or lay on that hip. Okay, so what can I do? Then he looked at me with a puzzling look. I said basically what you are telling me is I need to just learn to live with this. He said, yes, you will just have to figure out a way to live with the pain.

I decided to figure out what was causing the pain myself. I thought of everything I did when the pain got worse. I found that if I sit on my old saggy couch or rode in my low seated soft cushioned Buick, then the pain would get worse and it would be worse the next day. So.... I got rid of the old couch and got a new one. I drive my van instead of the Buick. And it is making a big difference. My chiropractor told me it will take about 4 months to completely heal.
Sometimes I wonder why I bother to go for tests and to specialists!

    Dear Arlene:

I agree, report her if you do not get the survery soon. No one, especially a patient at a hospital, should have to deal with such ignorant people.

    Good luck.

    Hi...
I also have had hip pain for nearly a year. (diagnosed with fibro for over 10 years) Went to a new internist (female) and she said I had bursitis in my hips. She gave me injections of steroids. Hurt like for a few days, but now is much better! She did a full round of lab tests (like I haven't had them before!!LOL) and she found no inflamation like RA or lupus either...but she did find something no one ever tested for before....Vitamin D. Found that I had only 17 when the range is 34-100. And I live in sunny southern California!! She said that new research shows that low vitamin D will cause bone and muscle pain. So I am on 1,000 units daily. I looked through all my old medical records and even when I went to a rheumatologist and an endocrinologist, nobody tested me for vitamin D......has any one ever been tested for this?

Arlene, I am so sorry that you were treated this way.

I agree with the others, report her to the administrator and like the other poster mentioned have your notes handy.

She had no right to make such a cruel comment to you and I would even ask for an apology.

It's bad enough that we have to deal with so many Doctors that don't believe us and now Techs.....I don't think so!

I hope you feel better soon and I am sending some (((((Gentle Hugs))))) your way.

I know you want to wait for the survey.I think its a great idea to fill it out.

But please still report her to the administer first. You see they do not read all the surveys. They normally take some and read them .Lets say they got 2000 of them. They may count out 50 and read #51 and than #101 and so on.

So your complaint may never get to them.I would send the administer a letter and call him/her in a week to follow up to make sure something is done about this tech.I would also ask for a written response to my letter so you have it for your files.

Good Luck to you.I hope you feel better real soon.

    Arlene,

I am very sorry that you had to listen to a professional say something to you like that. I was in the health care perfession for years and would never say anything as hurtful and crewl as that. You should report this person and make sure that she is repremanded for it...they are told to never give out advise or give an opinion of anyones status..so this person should be in a little hot water, especially if you went back to the physician that dx'd you and told them what was said...Again, I am sorry that you had to experience this. I have had FM for 8 years now..they just dx'd me about a month ago, but the doctor said that he thinks it has been about 8 years or better that I have been fighting this desease. I have to be honest with you if someone would have said this to me I probably would have gotten their name and called administration immediatley. I just don't put up with people miss treating me anymore, and you shouldn't either!

I hope that your test all come out okay, and I will be praying for you Arlene.

    God Bless,

    Noahvale--Kathy

    Dear Arlene,
I'm so sorry you experienced this. Plesase, please, report this person. She was totally out of line. Her opinions are of utterly no consequence. All she is doing is spreading her ignorance. And, she might be actually hurting others.

You were able to stand up under what she said. Someone else might not be, and might not have the strength or the support system to do so. This type of medical professional is professional in name only, and does not belong working with people, if they can't distinguish between their opinions and professional etiquette.

    Good luck,
    Terry

p,s, Oh yes, you should receive at least a phone call from her director. T.

Less then five years ago, one of the most highly respected rheumatologists in our area told my sister she had fibro, but then added that the diagnosis really was just a "trash can" diagnosis-someplace to throw all the symptoms when they won't fit anywhere else.

Ironically three years ago, a partner in his practice diagnosed me with fibro. (This confirmed a previous diagnosis made by my gp 23 years prior.) The difference was my rheumy took his diagnosis seriously. He, also, didn't stay in that practice very long.

Unfortunately, ignorance and thoughtlessness is found at all levels of the medical profession.
