    Country Funeral

As a young minister, I was asked by a funeral director to hold a grave-side service for a homeless man, with no family or friends. The funeral was to be held at a cemetery way back in the country, and this man would be the first to be laid to rest there.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods area, I became lost; and being a typical man did not stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late.

I saw the backhoe and the crew, who was eating lunch, But the hearse was nowhere in sight. I apologized to the workers for my tardiness, and stepped to the side of the open grave, where I saw the vault lid already in place.

I assured the workers I would not hold them up for long, but this was the proper thing to do. The workers gathered around, still eating their lunch. I poured out my heart and soul.

As I preached the workers began to say 'Amen,' 'Praise the Lord,' and 'Glory'! I preached, and I preached, like I'd never preached before: from Genesis all the way to Revelation.

I closed the lengthy service with a prayer and walked to my car.
As I was opening the door and taking off my coat, I overheard one of the workers saying to another, 'I ain't never seen anything like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.

HI JOYFULLY, NICE TO MEET ANOTHER MINISTER! THIS REMINDED ME OF A FUNERAL THAT I DID IN DOWNTOWN CHICAGO. MY SELF AND MY ASSOCIATE WHO WAS AN OLDER LADY (MISSIONARY FOR YEARS) ALWAYS TRAVELED IN A MOTORHOME IN THE EVANGELISTIC FIELD. I WAS AT ONE TIME HOLDING REVIVALS AND HOSTING OTHERS CONVENTIONS,ETC. DURING ONE OF THE EARLIER CONVENTIONS A MAN BROUGHT HIS MOTHER WHO WAS IN A WHEELCHAIR UP FOR PRAYER. ANYWAY TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORTER, SHE TOOK A GEAT LIKING TO ME AND THEY FOLLOWED ME EVERYWHERE THT I SPOKE AS LONG AS IT WAS WITHIN 100 MILES. SHE TOLD HER SON THAT SHE WANTED ME TO PREACH HER FUNERAL WHEN SHE DIED. OF COURSE I SAID YES BUT HE ASKED ME IF I WOOULD ALSO LET THIER PASTOR JOIN WITH ME. I SAID YES. WELL. I LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF IOWA. THEY IN MISSOURI. SO WHEN THE TIME CAME. MY ASSOC AND MYSELF WENT TO CHICAGO AND GOT A ROOM SINCE IT WAS DOWNTOWN AREA. HER SON WAS VERY STUBBORN , ALTHOUGH A CHRISTIAN. WELL, WE GOT TO THE FUNERAL HOME BEFORE ANYONE ELSE ARRIVED (THIS WAS HER ORIGINAL HOMETOWN). THEN THEPEOPLE STARTED COMING IN AND BEING SEATED, SO I GAVE HER THE NOD TO START PLAYING THE KEYBOARD SOFTLY.THIS WENT ON FOR AN HOUR OR MORE. THERE WAS TO BE ANOTHER FUNERAL ON THE HEELS OF OURS! NEXT THE OVERSEER CAME UP TO ME AND INFORMED ME THAT SOMEWHERE BETWEEN MO. AND CHICAGO, THEY HAD "LOST THE BODY"! WHATEVER THAT MEANT. SO ISTARTED ROLLING MY FOREFINGER, A SIGN FOR HER TO KEEP PLAYING.THEN THEY TOLD US THAT THE OTHER PREACHER WAS LOST BUT BODY WAS FOUND. HE CAME AN HOUR LATE! WE HAD TO GIVE UP THE BLDG, SO WE HAD A 10 MINUTE FUNERAL BECAUSE THE SON INSISTED ON WAITING FOR THE PASTOR. I SUNG ONE SONG "I'LL' RISE AGAIN" AND PREACHED HER OUT OF THERE! LOL I GAVE IT OVER TO HIM AT THE GRAVESITE. BUT WE WERE STANDING ON A BOARD (FROSTED OVER) IN HIGH HEELS, AND AFTER IT WAS OVER, WE FOUND THE BOARD WAS OVER ANOTHER OPEN GRAVE! IF PEOPLE ONLY KNEW THE THINGS WE GET INTO! LOL SORRY THIS WAS SO LONG BUT HAD TO TELL IT ALL. WELL ALMOST? GOD BLESS YOU .KEEP KEEPING ON! -SKI-
