I've been on Cymbalta 60mg for a month or so now - min side effects but I find I'm sweating horribly on my head. I am from the S Hemisphere so we're in the middle of summer but this has never ever been a problem for me before. And only my head / scalp. Not ready for menopause yet either i don't think.

Anyone any comments or similar experiences - would appreciate.

PS Otherwise feeling VERY much better !!!

You may want to post on depression board or cfid/fm board. I know alot of us over there are taking it. Or if you go there you can do a search and pull up old posts...there are many about the side effects of Cymbalta.

    Hope this helps~~~Laura

I switched from Prozac to Cymbalta about 3 months ago. So far, I have not had any problems ... let alone the sweating issue.

But I am only on 30 mg. When I tried to up the dose to 60 mg., it made me too sleepy during the day, so I went back to the 30 mg. and have decided to stay on that dose.

Could the Cymbalta be interacting with another med that you are on?

Could you be in peri-menopause? It starts as early as your 30s I've been told. I'm 54 and I think I've been through the roughest part so far -- I've experienced those high body temps and the sweat pouring off my brow ... with fans running on "high" even when the air conditioning is on!

See you are from South Africa! Hope you have air conditioning since this is your summer.

What type of specialist doctor are you? My daughter is a doctor here in the U.S. (a family practice physician).

Hope you find a remedy for your problem soon!

I had the very same thing happen. I felt better, but then when I switched to the 60mg, I got soo many new things wrong. When i went to the doctor, he immediatly took me off. He said my body was rejecting it/ allergic. Back on effexor - no more sweats.

Hello, I know you are taking Cymbalta, I am taking oxycontin and for years I've told my doctor and others about my sweating, just on my head and it could happen several times a day. I've been doing it for so long I've noticed a pattern; it happens when I am getting ready for something, if I'm nervous and not nervous. My hair just drips and trying to look my best is hopeless. I think that medications have something to do with it and also stress, it may be more than that that causes it. I just had my 60th BD and know what hot flashes are, these are NOT hot flashes. I would be interested to know how many other people are experiencing this phenomenon. I know I haven’t helped you, I sure do hope that someone knows exactly why this sweating is only on our head (although last summer I noticed it was going to my chest too) good luck.

I just took myself off of Cymbalta although it helped me TREMENDOUSLY with the fibro pain I had. BUT, it made me have very negative (i.e. suicidal) thoughts. I had to get back on my Lexepro to control that. I also experienced the sweating on my head too! Under my eyes, my forehead, my upper lip would sweat like crazy and it was embarrassing. I thought it was cause I am overweight, but it came on so suddenly and seems to have stopped.

I miss the good effects of Cymbalta I wish it would have worked for me.

Wow, that's funny because I've suddentlly been sweating up a storm in my head as well, and been wondering where it came from. I'm on 60 mgs twice a day for fibro; however, I've just been taking it once a day.

I'm 60, but had a historectmy in the 90's. I had/have the flashes, but not like this. So perhaps that is my issue as well.

    Thanks for sharing.

i was on it, too....gained 50 lbs on a small female frame....very rapid weight gain....and the SWEATING WAS HORRIBLE!!!!! i had to quit taking Cymbalta even though it helped me do more in my life....

i continue with sweating problems....3-4 years after the cymbalta....jeez, thanks....and it is true that when ever you are in a hurry to be somewhere, that is when the sweating is the get a liitle anxious and then it is all can't get you makeup on fast enough before the sweat beads on your hair is always damp underneath and around your face...

i had the hysterectomy before I got FM....they left my who knows about hotflashes...doc has testsed y hormones and they are "normal"

    Hi JJ,

Glad you are feeling better! I, too, have terrible sweating and it literally runs down face and neck, esp. when in anxiety situations and exertion!! I've been on cymbalta 60mg and then 30mg, for about 3 yrs.

It also kills my libido--so sexual desire. My doctor gave me Adderall yesterday to try and then we will discuss my cymbalta problem, next month.

Hope you sweating subsides. Good luck

I too had a partial hysterectomy...10 years ago. I was on cymbalta the last 3 years, and noticed INCREDIBLE head sweating. This was NOT hot flashes...doc took mee off it about 1 month ago and I'm now on xanax for panic attacks (if needed..rarely do) and celexa. the sweating has subsided significantly. I literally would sweat prior to going to work to the point that my head looked sopping wet...embarrassing so bad.

I hope I get better, and miss the good effects of cymbalta, but cannot handle the embarrassing head sweating! My doctor said he had not heard of that complaint before either...go figure!

edit: im also on diovan hct 160mg for high blood pressure[This Message was Edited on 10/16/2008]

I now get a custom dosage from a pharmacist.

Effexor XR comes in 75 or 37.5 capsules. My Doc recommended trying to get them cut to 56.25 or 50.

I tried 56.25 and it works well with less side effects.

    May be something to consider.

I take 60mg a day along w/450mg of Wellbutrin. It passed though for the most part. I have night sweats once a month, and occasional hot flashes, but hey I am 43 and it is par for the course :0)

It has been a great med for me. Hope the sweating passes.

I take 60mg of Cymbalta & sweat like crazy. It drips from my head, my hair gets as wet as though I came out of the shower. However, without the Cymbalta, I have trouble functioning.

Initially I had massive sweats (in the middle of the Canadian winter :)), this has dropped over the past 9 months. I now sleep on a towel about once/month, sweat a lot in summer (but then Toronto is seriously humid). This is annoying, but I have always sweated a lot, so it is a quantitative change, rather than qualitative. A *very* small price to pay for having my life and family back. Different drugs affect different people in different ways; the question is whether the side-effects are bad enough to go through the withdrawal before starting something else (which may not be as effective and may have other, worse side-effects). For me the answer is a resounding "NO!", but for you will depend on how severe the depression is, how severe the side effects are, how strong you feel, how much support you have ....

I have FM, and am not on anything at this time. Can not take the meds they have tried, one being cymbalta, have not been on it for at least 3 months. Trouble is that I wake up every night 3-4 times sweating my "you know what off". My head being the worst part. My rheumy mentioned next time trying savella, but I'm a little nervous, as other meds didn't work for me. Do you think the sweating is just a FM thing?

  17. I took Cymbalta for quite a while and did experience night sweating. Had to get up in the middle of the night and change. Cymbalta also left me very constipated. When we changed Health Medicare it was suggested to my Rhuematolgist by the new Ins. Com. that I try Fluoxetine ( generic for Prozac ) I was taking 60mg of Cymbalta now with the new med I am taking 30mg and it does help me. I feel pretty good and the Fluoxeine is very inexpensive. No Constipation and very little sweating. Creeps me out to think I am taking a reletive to Prozac but if it works............What can I say!!??

If you are not familiar with this information, please review, from the Mayo Clinic:

"Serotonin Syndrome symptoms typically occur within several hours of taking a new drug or increasing the dose of a drug you're already taking. Signs and symptoms include:

    Agitation or restlessness
    Rapid heart rate
    Dilated pupils
Loss of muscle coordination or twitching muscles
    Heavy sweating
    Goose bumps

Severe serotonin syndrome can be life-threatening. Signs and symptoms include:

    High fever
    Irregular heartbeat "

** MY TAKE: Simple sweating can be relatively innocuous & easily off-set by increasing water and electrolyte consumption. But anyone on a med, OTC or supp that affects serotonin, who develops additional symptoms of Serotonin Syndrome (SS), should consult their doc, ASAP.

People die every year of medication-induced SS.

It is particularly dangerous to combine several meds that increase serotonin. Serotonin RX meds include:
    * SSRIs -- antidepressants like Celexa, Prozac, Sarafem, Luvox, Paxil, Zoloft, etc.
    * SNRIs -- antidepressants like Trazodone, Effexor and Cymbalta
    * Tobacco-addiction medications like buproprion, Wellbutrin, Zyban, Chantix
    * MAOIs -- meds like Marplan, Nardil and many others
    * Migraine meds like Axert, Amerge, Imitrex, Zomig, etc.
    * Mood stabilizers like Eskalith, Lithobid
    * Anti-nausea meds like Reglan, Zofran
    * Certain antibiotics (Zyvox)
    * Anti-retrovirals such as those used to treat HIV/AIDS
    * IBS meds that act as serotonin agonists

    * Illicit drugs can cause SS or contribute to it if combined with RX meds. Stimulants, amphetamines, LSD, Ecstasy, and cocaine have all been implicated.

    * OTC cough & cold meds containing dextromethorphan (the Robitussin DM, etc.)have been implicated in serotonin syndrome. Some guaifenesen products used by FMers also have DM.

Serotonin-enhancing supplements include: L-tryptophan, 5-htp, St. John's Wort, SamE, and melatonin. There is less research, fewer reports on SS associated with these supps, however, it NOT advisable to combine several of such supps, or to combine the supps with RX meds, unless under medical direction & supervision.

    Best wishes.

I thought the board was having trouble again when I looked and saw the original post was back from years ago.
