    hello all,

i am new to this particular board.
have had fm for 23 yrs.
1 1/2 yrs ago i went home from work with a piercing headache, 11:15am i punched the time clock out and didn't return for nearly 3 weeks.
at any rate, this headache has never went away. it has become my worse nightmare and has caused me to completely give up all but a couple hrs a week of work, (if i'm lucky to do that much.)
had all the test: mri, c-scan, spinal tap, x-rays, tons of blood draws, etc...
been to 2 neurologist, 1 headache specialist, 2 primary doctors, countless emergency visits, one 7 day stay in the headache clinic on injections and a meds list that is a mile long.
migraine meds do not work, narcotics(sp) will numb the head a bit, ambien for sleep. thats it!
head pain never drops below 4 (PAIN SCALE 1-10),
its extreme pressure all around, spikes with what feels like an ice pick stabbing through my head.
    sensitive to light, noise, smells.
constant earaches, neck pain and swelling blood vessels. memory is shot..along with other things.

from the beinning i thought this could be another part of the fm rearing it's ugly head. however, not one doctor has taken me seriously & checked it out.
there is a headache called "CERVICOGENIC" anybody hear of it? well, it is fm related.
    has anybody else experienced this?
body pain is bad enough....head pain will make ya crazy!!!

    all thoughts are welcome.
    thanks for your time.

I feel your pain. I had BIG TIME trouble with chronic daily headaches for years. The doctors gave me elavil for pain but did not seem to care if they found the etiology of them.

Well, I found the etiology. I was receiving allergy injections twice a week. Finally in 1999 my immunologist stopped the injections and NO MORE HEADACHES. I had to go back on allergy shots but they spaced them apart.

I even fasted once for 6 days to make sure it wasn't anything I was eating or ingesting.

I feel your pain. MS Contin would not even take the edge off of it.

Like Genetic Defect, my migraines were triggered by allergies..but I could not tolerate allergy shots at all-had to go to emergency room for "the migraine of all migraines", after being on allergy shots for about a month..

I went from one headache specialist to another (was diagnosed with classic migraines), which never solved the riddle of my daily migraines..Unbelievably, this year, I started treatment with OLE (Olive Leaf Extract), which has calmed down the allergies, and cleared the pathogens, which probably has an indirect effect on the allergies/migraine phenomenon..and afterwards, have almost had no migraines to the present date after treatment with OLE...

There is plenty of info on this site on OLE, if you are interested...put in message search box..There is also two articles on the subject...It is similar to treatment with the ABX, which has been effective for stopping the daily migraine in others..

Used to have a headache EVERY day. What has helped

    Remeron (not together)
    Cutting out bread and sugars
    Taking Olive Leaf Extract

I noticed since I stopped taking Remeron, the headaches are returning!

    Hi Brouke,
I had a headache everyday for a few years before I was finally diagnosed w/ FM. Try to find a doctor that "knows" about FM. That made all the diference for me.

I go through periods when the headaches last for weeks, then all of the sudden they are gone.

Right now, yes, I am experienceing the same thing. I lay down in a dark room, shades pulled, put some relaxing music on, take something for the pain.

When the pain meds wear off though, its back again. Hard to function when like this you know? I truly understand. Mine is accompanied right now with a right ear ache, sort of like TMJ. I also suffer from TMJ, so could be a link to it there. The pain comes from my ear, up the jaw, into my head.

I've never heard of CERVICOGENIC headaches. When I started with my headaches, it was after I had spinal anesthesia & got a spinal h/a which lasted for FIVE years! I finally did get relief with analgesic meds & help from a chiropractor. The chiropractor was the one that 1st diagnosed the migraines. All the docs I went to couldn't help me until the chiro came up with it. I went years without any relief. I was also eventually sent to a neurologist that dianosed me with Chronic Daily Headache Syndrome. Lucky me!! All kinds of h/a's. Migraine, tension, sinus, the whole gammut.

There is such a thing as "icepick" headaches. They hurt, don't usually last very long. But I think I know what you're talking about there.

I never had complete relief from the migraines until I was being treated for a motor vehicle accident 2 years ago & they had me on so many meds, pain meds, muscle relaxers that it FINALLY broke the 24 year cycle of headaches almost every single day! I have had a couple of migraines over the past year & the over the counter medication took care of it. Recently I had a very severe one, which took days to get rid of. It scared me, because I thought it was just going to go into the daily cycle again. It hasn't occurred again. Knock on wood. Good luck. dolsgirl

I was having daily headaches for apporximately 5 years. No matter what I took they would just come right back. Last year I started seeing a chiropractor and after two sessions my headaches were gone. I only get headaches once every couple months now and even those go away with asprin.

I have been thru the headache thing to. Mine got better with chiropractic help too. I also spent $40.00 for a new pillow. I know it sounds to simple after years of testing, but it is what worked for me. I still get them from time to time but not daily like I did for over a year. The pillow is one made of foam and has dented area for your head with support of your neck. I wish you luck in your search.

Hi Brouke, welcome to the board. I had headaches, sinus, migraines, clusters, for fifteen years.

Nothing seem to do much good. I read a book called; ABC of Asthma, Allergies and Lupus' by F. Batmanghelidj M.D.

This doctor said that headaches, allergies, are caused from dehydration.

He recommended that people should drink half their body weight in OUNCES of water a day, along with a quarter teaspoon of Sea Salt throughout the day.

Well, I am not a water drinker, never have been. But I gave it a try.
It took about a week. Since I am drinking 70 ounces of water a day (a little over the amount), and taking the Sea Salt, I rarely get a headache of any kind anymore. Even my cognitive problems have been a lot better. This is a year and a half ago. I am almost completely headache free.

Its cost next to nothing to try, and if you are not drinking this amount of water I suggest that you give it a try. Plus the book is worth a read.

The only problem I had, was finding a water to drink that did not choke me. I bought a small bottle of every water in the store, and finally settle for 'Evian' water from France. Its light, plus it has natural minerals in it, and it goes down easy.

HOpe you find some help soon. It is enough living with the Fibromyalgia pain but the headaches to me were worst.

When your head hurts so bad that you are dizzy, can't think, feel nauseous, have blurred vision, light hurts, noise hurts, thats bad!

I did try all kinds of meds, and OTC's too. But nothing really made much difference in the pain. Ice packs were the biggest help along with a warm mist vaporizer.

I make ice packs out of Rice, they work perfect by the way. You just take a mans tube sock, fill it three quarters full of raw rice tie the end in a knot, put it in the freezer and you have a great non-drippy cold compress. If you want heat, just put them in the microwave oven.

Sure hope you get some help soon.

    Again, welcome to the board.

    Shalom, Shirl

The headaches drive me crazy! I use to have sinus headaches then they started getting worse sometimes I had to lay down and use heat packs or sometimes cold packs. Sometimes they would last a couple days, well I realized they were migraine headaches. I have them frequently and haven't found anything but rest and ice paks on my head and neck help or sometime I use the heat. It depends on how I feel whether I use ice or heat but usually use the cold and go to bed. I take extra strength Tylenol and just try to sleep it off. I also use caffeine usually coffee which isn't always good for the Fibro but it does help the headaches. I know what you are going through and the Fibro and medication is bad enough but then the headaches make it that much worse. I too drink lots of water during the day.

    good morning everybody!!

thank you so very much for your kind words and sharing of similar experiences.
after reading all of your post, i will sort through the things i have not tried and apply those where needed.
most of the meds mentioned are in a bag in my closet...

the neurologist dx this as chronic daily headache (pretty vague i think).
as soon as i can get my primary doctor to write a referral, i am off to see a fm specialist.
its just getting this insurance company to do what is needed... they are tough to deal with, as i am sure many of you know.
the games they play gets rather tiring...especially when they are messing with our health.

once again, thank you for responding....you have all been very helpful.

    peace & well being~

can you please tell me who and how they dx your headache?
what you are describing is what i am feeling.
i happend to stumble upon this type of headache while doing fibro / headache research.
when i read the similarities of symptoms, it was like the clouds opened up. much like when i was finally dx with fm after 8 yrs of doctors telling me i was crazy and "just" depressed or my underpants were too tight!! PLEEEASSSE!
doctors still say that about fm, however, thankfully we have a large network of sufferers who tell us different!! thank God!!!

so, if you don't mind, can you please tell me about your experience with this cervicogenic headache.

    thanks again
