Do you have to get ambien out of your system for restoril to work

I was taking ambien. It helped me sleep, but took a couple of hrs to kick in and I slept for only a couple of hrs after. Dr. switched me to restoril. I take it at 7:00 to get a little drowsy by 10:00 or so, but I seem to not sleep much and when I do I have wild dreams. Pretty much like not taking anything at all. Does it take awhile for the ambien to get out of my system, insomia rebound, before the restoril will work? I was wondering if the restoril is not a drug that will help me at all and I should do something different again.

Both of these meds are benzodiazepams.
Similar modes of action. You may find a more rapid onset if you take them on empty stomach. Any medicine takes longer to "kick in" if there is food in your stomach.
But it sounds like Benzo's just aren't working for you.
I hope you find something that will help you. I take my ambien with my serzone and it knocks my socks off for at least 4-5 hours of hard sleep.
