Hi. I just started the application process for SSDI. I was wondering if you are taxed on the SSDI benefits?

I am not taxed but someone else here stated that they were taxed.

    I'm confused.

they are taxable. But , if you dig into the tax laws and forms there are legal deductions where you may not have to actually pay the taxes. This , of course , depends on your total family income.

I DO have taxes taken out of my monthly disability. This is due to the fact that between my SSDI and my husband's salary - we get killed at tax time. I would rather pay out a little each month then owe Uncle Sam a big check in April. I guess it comes down to pay them now or pay them later.

I believe it would all boil down to the gross pay in your household vs. dependents and deductions.
