I went to my doc today after my lab results last week showed continued abnormal liver enzymes since taking Methotrexate a couple of years ago. He drew more blood for a Ferritin level, ANA, liver panel, hepatitis panel and something else that I can't seem to remember. The results may take up to a week to get back and he wants me to think carefully about a liver biopsy. I told him I started milk thistle yesterday and he looked it up and said that he didn't think it would be a problem and it may help, but he'd hate to rely on that alone, if in case I had worse than a fatty or toxic liver. He wants to start me on medication for my Cholesterol and Triglycerides of 465, but won't until these lab results are back. We'll see....

You be sure to keep them checking that liver, and from what I read here Milk Thistle works wonders in detoxify the liver.

Keep us updated on how you are doing.

I think you are right about starting other meds untill your tests are all back.

    You take care,

    Shalom, Shirl

ask for plenty of sedation ahead of time... I call this doing yourself a favor. I've never had one but I have assisted with these... and that's my advice as one fibro lady to another! Good luck...keep us posted!!!!!!

I just have to tell you that I had a "liver biopsy" and I did perfectly fine..Everyone is different..The hardest part for me was lying on my right side for approx. 4hrs. to prevent bleeding..I'm so glad that I did have it done..Because it turned out that I have AIH (autoimmune hepatitis)..I started treatment right after the results were in and now my levels are all within normal range..I am still on medication for it, but hopefully we will be able to stop and see if I go into remmission..If not, it's back to prednisone, and continuing on a drug called Imuran (for your immune system)..As I'm sure you already now, a lot of medications can cause elevated liver enzymes too..A liver biopsy is one true way to see what the problem is and what kind of shape your liver is in..I would think if you deal with the pain of fibro, a liver biopsy wouldn't bother you that much..You can always ask to be sedated..Some drs. will, and others will not..
Take Care..But please continue to have those levels checked..

Cholosterol meds can also raise your liver enzymes........[This Message was Edited on 09/07/2002]
Oh by the way, the only pain I really got from the biopsy was a shoulder pain right after it was done, but dr. warned me ahead of time that this could happen..Other than that I just felt a little stiffness at the site........[This Message was Edited on 09/07/2002]

    Hi,
I am a nurse too. Psych to be exact. I had to have a Liver Biopsy because of Hep C I got from a blood tranfusion after the birth of my daughter. It is usually short stay...I stayed overnight because I had increased back and shoulder pain after the procedure, and they thought they might have nicked the pluera of my lung lining or some such thing. It was somewhat painful for me, even with the IV sedation, but not unbearable. It really is a great indicator of what eactly is going on. If it's definate answers you want...I'm afraid that's the test.

They were not bad. And I am a BIG baby, i even hate the dentist. They give you a local, because you have to be awake to hold your breath.
I have hepatitis C, and what helped me was liver detox supplements, and a low carbohydrate diet. Lots of fresh vegetables, moderate preotin, a couple fruits a day. I eat no grains, because they bother my stomach, but definitely no refined starches or sugars.

This has helped a lot...I DO dread telling my husband. He still likes to believe I'll snap out of it someday. I am not on Cholesterol med. yet because of the liver enzymes, even though my Triglycerides and Cholesterol each are 465. After my lab results done yesterday come back and I decide about the biopsy, I'll probably start on it as well as that nasty diet. See, I'm a picky eater and I LOVE carbs the best. I don't eat a lot of protein and I cannot stomach a lot of veggies. I'd have to live on green beans, peas, cucumber and carrots....would potatoes and corn and pintos be starches? Good Lord, I hate change!
    Love,

    Hello Kady,
What is your doctor looking for or is waiting for test results to tell you?

I had one in 1999 by a very respected gastroenterologist.
I was tested for the same tests as you, but, mainly he was concerned with the ferritin (iron) issue and if I had any liver damage.
It has always been the "gold standard" to do a liver biopsy for Hemochromatosis. But now many are suggesting trial phlebotomies.
The only reason I submitted to one was to see if there was liver damage, cirrhosis or cancer.
I have never regretted that decision.
The procedure was uncomfortable, but went smoothly. I did not like lying on my side for 3 hours. I did request a Viocodin for my back pain, and I guess it helped take the edge off of the procedure.
The site of entry was quite sore that night, but got better the next day.
The specimen was sent to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

There are known risks to this procedure. Make sure your doctor gives you substantial reason for proceeding with it and refers you to a specialist. I even asked my gastro how many he had performed.

Please keep us informed and take care,
    granmama
