I am not concerned about this for myself, I am getting pain meds but it seems to me like a lot of people have been told recently that they are no longer going to be able to receive pain meds, the Drs are telling people that, could it be the Drs got some letter recently or directive from someone (insurance companies?) that us fibro people need to just deal with it? How fair is this to us? I am just starting them and I have tremendous relief but I am worried about a trend here? I am going to go across the mountain this weekend & visit family, we have a new baby in the family, my bro in law is a Doc, I would be happy to ask him this question along with the flu shot question, any other questions I should ask, I know we all have a thousand and I hate to abuse the issue with him but he is usually pretty good about sharing info. I will report back on these issues.

I know I can get away with about maybe half a dozen questions so I usually pick them wisely but I just am hearing this so much, a lot of people here have been cut off recently, I just don't get it. How about we search the medical journals, recent publications? I will do some searching tomorrow. We would all be in a world of hurt if we are all going to get cut off, I really feel for those of you that have, it breaks my heart, this DD is tough enough and I know for me I just finally had had enough, the pain takes so much out of you, just makes it so much worse.

I live about 6 hours from Canada, I understand you can get pain meds there, have you searched the net for "canada pain meds". That would be worth a try, I think they can be bought online, I know one thing they have there is tylenol w/ codeine over the counter......worth a try.

    What are your other conditions?

Have you tried a pain clinic? Are they more amenable to the pain med option? Just a thought.

    Jaci:
I just joined the group and was reading your post. I have CFS/FIBRO, and also I'm Bipolar. I'm 41 yrs. married with two sons. Since being dx with this horrific disease I must say that I'm currently on no pain meds. The 1st Rheum I saw dx me and gave me a script for Elavil 50mg, and that's it. He NEVER saw mw again. So I discussed the matter with my pdoc and he gave me a referral to see a new Rheum. He hasn't given me anyting for pain either??? I have an appt to see a pain specialist in 2 weeks, which seems so far away. I reside in California, and yes it's 3:40am I've been awake now for over 2hrs. due too constant throbbing pain. This is really driving me crazy, and also I have carpal tunnel in my left hand, now my right hand is acting up too. At this point I'm getting very frustrated with being in constant pain, along with burning, tingling, spasms in legs, arms, and lower back kills me 24/7. Well, I can go on about other symptoms but I'm sure you understand the picture clearly. I appreciate any feedback, and feel free to email me privately as well if you desire.
Thanks so much & Have A Lovely Day!
    Sincerely,
    Michelle K.

my rheumatologist and my neurosurgeon refered me to a pain specialist due to this reason.

If they write too many scrips for narcotics they get flagged and their records are torn apart and they really have to go to a lot of trouble defending themselves so they do nto want to deal with it. My rheumy and I are friendly and she has told me of her nightmares. She hates it because she belives everyone is entitled to a betyer quality of life and if pain meds help so be it. She refers all the people she can to my pain management doc, problem is just fibro will not get you in, my osteo and surgeries is the reason I got accepted. There are a lot of pain clinics out there who will not accept you with just fibro and that stinks.

I hope you do nto get cut off, talk with your doctor about your fear before it happens. some docs are okay with the DEA and ther bull****, some are not-at least you can put the cards on the table and look to be referred to pain doc if necessary.

I was going to say that I had read recently about some local docs being given a lot of pressure because they run pain clinics and one was actually closing his practice. This is a doc whose name I've seen on the Co-Cure Good Docs list. I find it frightening that this is happening.

I am not on narcotics, at this time, but one of my best friends is on Oxycontin for Trigeminal Mylagia and without it she would not be able to function. I know that my pain is always with me, despite my pain meds. But it is tolerable with them.

I can't imagine going back to where I was a year ago, taking way too much Aleve and waking up in the middle of the night due to pain, trying to find a way to get comfortable in bed, sitting, driving. It was a nightmare.

I don't have a solution for this, but I do think we need to watch and read about it and become proactive when we find a way. Perhaps getting a large group to swamp their members of Congress's office with mail about living with chronic pain. That might be a beginning. Could try Senators, too. Any other ideas out there?

When I was first trying to get on STD last year one of my docs was dragging his heals in returning the forms requested by the disability comopany. Even though ultimately the reason I was seeing him had nothing to do with my dx, at that time I had NO dx and was seeing doctor after doctor to rule out things.

I finally called his office for the umpteenth time and they told me he had been busy. I replied that I wasn't getting paid because he hadn't returned the form, and being single, this was a real strain on my budget. Suddenly it got returned. Don't know if this will work for you, but it might be worth a try.

Same here, with the depression. My therapist called this morning, but my mother told her I was unavailable (I wasn't). Between listening to her complain about everything under the sun, especially anything my son does, and grumbling because I'm trying to make some order out of all her unpacked boxes from when we moved over a year ago, this is doing me in. So I called her back and left her a message and mentioned I wanted to talk to her too.

Are you on any antidepresant? If so perhaps all you need is a counselor, not a shrink. They mostly do med management now and few of them do much counseling.

Good luck. I do know how frustrating this process is. My rep at the disability company has the most irritable and uncaring voice and I think her brain is filled with mud because she doesn't seem to understand the things I tell her.

Last winter she was driving my treating doc nuts. I had just finally begun treatment and was in very poor shape and she kept asking him when I could return to work. He would look at me and shrug his shoulders and say, "How am I supposed to know?" Neither of us knew if or when that would happend. But writing unknown just kept her asking for a report after every single visit.

When I went back to work part-time and was on LTD to cover the rest of my pay, she left me alone, other than to call me about 6 weeks after my check was due to tell me I would be getting it any day.

Now I am on leave while awaiting a decision on disability retirement. Payday is the last day of the month. I'm waiting to see if I'm living off my savings or will actually have a check in my account!

Feel free to vent to me any time. I'm in one of those moods today.

I will look into it, I will make email inquiries and phone calls if I need to to understand their policy (or lack thereof) and let you know.

that managed care is just that..... people want to manage your life and care... and yeah they want to manage the money part too... I think its about time we all do without insurance and see what the hell happens,..... doc would still see people for cash I betcha!!!! just think about it!
anyway, there are also so many laws about drugs you wouldn't believe it! People working in the drug industry have deep pockets that are countered by people with special interests with deeper pockets and the end result of all of this is you being told I can't do this or that for you... well *listen* people.... God *gave* man the technology* to make our physical issues mucher easier to bear... say that to your physicain next time he or she says no to a request for pain meds....I only have trouble with one of my docs now... guess which one.... the rheumatologist... he's "not comfortable" prescribing narcotics or pain pills... I asked him what he was comforatable doing LOL LOL>>>>> some days are like that I call it *itchy!! LOL>>>> Good luck but this isn't gonna change anytime soon!

i guess i should consider myself lucky. i still get my med's prescribed, but EVERY SINGLE TIME it's a roller coaster ride to get them filled. something ALWAYS goes wrong.

w/o my pain med's I'd be in the ER writhing in pain on the waiting room floor - screaming and making a scene! As it is now, i am unable to sit due to the hard chairs at the Hearing Monday - too much back pain.ugh!

I was reading some old posts hoping that someone would recommend a good pain specialist in Spokane or Sandpoint Id. They must not be afraid to prescribe pain meds. I have had the same doctor in Seattle for 20 years and he just retired and now seeing a Dr in the same clinic. He will carry on with the medications I've been on all that time (oxy an breakthrough pain med). It is a long drive to Seattle and I am looking for a good Dr closer. Has anyone gone to Dr Lynda Williamson? She is a DO and Pain specialist. The government has scared most Dr's and the extra time they have to put in on each pain patient is horrible. I don't blame them for not wanting to deal with us but what are we to do? Please help me...I wouldn't be surprised if no one can help....it is horrible. I am 68 and in pain night and day, the meds help a lot and I can not imagine not being able to get them. Thanks in advance for your help.
