    Hi all,
Went to see my doc last week to ask if he would refer me to see a Rheumy,7yrs after being diagnosed i still havent seen one!
I asked him what meds he would give me to treat my Fibro?
Antidepressants he said then dismissed me.
What about the pain i thought, aam i supposed to just put up whith it?
He said "I wont refer you to a Rheumy because theyll only tell you what i did.
    So what do you think?
Should i insist i see one or just lleave it so that hes got less work to do?

I too asked my family physician for a rheumy referral and he declined. He said 1. the waiting list is up to 1 year and 2. there is nothing a rheumy will do that he hasn't done ie: talk and take blood tests.
He also will not let me try Klonopin or Neurontin which many from this board have found relief with, but instead gave me an rx for Bextra which does absolutely nothing. My husband is on my back to switch doctors, and I think I agree. Unfortunately like most, I hate to have to start the whole process over again..

    Good luck,

I seem to be having the same problem you are. I'm in the US, so our health care system might be different from yours, I have no idea. My doctor would not refer me another, nor will he give me anything for pain. So far, just an anti-depressant (as if to tell me that the pain is all just in my head). And this doc even claims to believe in fibro and treat it! Well, this treatment is just not working and I don't know how to get him to budge. I went one time to a "pain clinic" and was told to exercise more and not given any meds or other help at all (and it cost me $250 for that 10 minute visit). I already do try to exercise and I'm only 98 lbs and in fairly good shape despite the fibro. I just can't figure out why docs do not want to help you be in less pain. They'll give out anti-depressants all day long, but never anything for pain....

I just posted a message saying almost the exact same thing and asking for suggestions. It's very frustrating when they say they believe in the DD and then do nothing for you. My last appt was also $250 for about 10 min and he left the room 3 times in that time span. And I also got nothing and mine said he was taking me off all meds.

    Hi 2girls,
There are so many problems with docs for us as sufferers of this DD,but we must stick together.
I agree with your hubby that you should change your doc if he wont refer you to rheumy.
You deserve like all fellow sufferers the best care there is,after all iyts hard enough having this DD without Docs thinking they know best etc.
How can they possibly know best when its us that suffer daily with all different symptoms of this DD?
Its our lives that are changed so much that its hard sometimes to imagine ourselves post Fibro.
You need to get a doc wholl refer you to rhemuy & take it from there, dont take no for an answer.
Im going back to my doc & am telling him i need to be referred, not asking & being refused.
I let him talk me out of it once but not a second time, good luck.

    Hi crazyvickie,
I changed to doc no5 about 3 wks ago & his bedside manner is much better than my last docs, which makes a big difference to me.
But i asked him to refer me to a rheumy & he said, get this:
Theres no point he will only suggest treating you with anti-deps like i have.
Big mistake new doc, youre dealing with a girl whos eaten docs like you for brekkie!
Im used to being told "Its all in your head","Go away & get on with your life & get used to the pain, coz its not going anywhere,etc.etc.
No more of that,7yrs ive suffered with this DD & its about time docs started to stand up & take notice of us Fibroites.
So im going to find out how to campaign to make docs more aware of Fibroites suffering etc as a sufferer myself.
I have a voice & i can use it,i can stand up & be heard so wish me luck.

    Well Sharon,
This is what you gotta do girlfriend.
Dont let them dismiss you when you ask for pain relief, you insist you need something ok.
I took dihydrecodeine when 1st diax(7yrs ago)i now take codydramol.
They were fine for me,but were all different so ask him what pain relief he can offer you.
Might be an idea to tell him you know someone with Fibro whos taken Dihydrecodein & now takes Co-dydramol,as he might try you on 1 or other(Its worth a try.)
    Good luck

    Hi scooby,
Well i really feel for you as were both in the same boat arent we?
And were not alone by a long chalk lots of others in same boat on here.
Must be different here(england) because here we dont pay for treatment, that doesnt mean its any better LOL!)
You must be really suffering & sounds to me like you need new doc who knows someone in pain when he sees them & will give you something for the pain.
Either that or you go in there & turn on the tears & tell him youre at your wits end & some & you really need him to listen to you.
Good luck to you, youre in my prayers.

    Hi Shazz,
I was on Prozac, since then been on loads different anti-deps,changed to new ones 3wks ago & am waiting to see if they are better for me.
I told new doc i had Fibro & straight away he said "Well why are you on Cipramil, theyre not right for you".
I thought "Wow,my doc has not only heard of Fibro,he is prescribing different anti-deps which he thinks will be better for my Fibro.
    RESULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now were waiting to see if they kick in & stop me crying & worrying & what ever else i do.

I can say the my family doctor is much better than my Rheumy. After my first hour with the Rheumy, he reviewed my medications and said this is exactly what I would have done. I actually stopped going to him. In your case, you are not getting help with your symptoms. It is my experience that Doctors need to see evidence equal to the symptom. As tough as it is to stand up sometimes, it seems that you either need to make some noise or find a new doc. I have ample support regarding my need for pain medication and I have a library of studies from accidents/injuries that represent physical proof for a chronic pain condition. I don't know how much help I would get without the proof.

Hang in there Sharon. You deserve a higher quality of living.

I always hate hearing how patients are mistreated--or not treated at all. Please do not be satisfied with this lack of care, and no treatment, or pain relief.

There are good doctors out there---I know its hard to find them, but it really makes all the difference in the world. I, too, have gone through the grueling tasks of firing one doctor after another. Finally I made the decision that in order find a better quality of life, resulting in actual treatment, I would be relentless in my endeavor.

My D.O. which I have found is exceptional. My office visits range from $60-$80 dollars and last from a half hour to 45 mins. He treats with integrated medicine, and is more than willing to try treatments (prescription meds, herbs, supps, vitamins) I suggest, as well as those that he has experienced in his large client base, and continuing research, as being beneficial. Everyone has his or her own treatment regime as we are all individuals. The proof is in the pudding---I was totally bedridden when I began seeing him.

Please do not sell yourself and your health short. You deserve to feel better. You deserve treatment---not someone seeing you every few months and treating you with antidepressants only. To the others, you deserve pain relief. You all deserve much better---you must search until you find a good doctor, who is caring, and genuinely wants to address your disorders, fighting to make you fell as well as possible. You need an advocate with these disorders.

I tried all the Drs. with in an hour and a half drive---none offered anything but 5 min. appts. and antidepressants.
I looked at all the "hits" on web searches, using "Fibromyalgia Specialist <my state>". I began making phone calls, interviewing the receptionists. I looked for Doctors on the Good Doctor list at this site, for anyone with in a days ride. I am telling you---it is well worth it. The progress I have made is---great! We have addressed so many symptoms, and downed systems, tackling them one at a time.

I encourage you to---if you are not receiving validation, and treatment, if you are not making progress--go elsewhere. I know it is difficult and tiring to look for a new doc, but isn't it really stressful, and tiring, seeing the same doc, and getting nowhere, and receiving no treatment per say?

Best wishes, in your quest for wellness,
    LL

then the reg. ones do about what to do and how to treat us. I got on the phone and interviewed docs and saw a couple as an interview. It took time but, we found one we love and so do many others. Unfortunatly we all must take charge of our own health and get what we need for ourselves. Write a list of all your symtoms to for the new one and what meds you have taken and what you would like to try if he or she feels it may help.

Good luck to you and know we all here care about you, Kim and Gary

If it's at all possible , see another Dr., sounds like this one is not in to Helping you. What's so wrong with a Person (Patient) wanting another opinion?

I have 3 Dr's, it took awhile but it was worth it, because unless they come up with a cure, I need treatment for my CPM/FMS/OA/DDD/DJD/IBS/MVP, that's why I need 3 Dr.s, I keep them working overtime. All kidding aside, please do see if you can see a Dr., that will treat you for your Pain.

You have to Get On Tp of the pain, to be able to fight the good fight of these Syndromes and, for me, the Co-exisiting conditions. Which is what my Med's are written for, not just for FMS, but for the other conditions that Hurt, and that makes the FMS kick in, so for me it's a necessary Treatment/ Pain Controll.

    Good luck,
sharon, (yes another Sharon, so far I know of 5 Sharon's amazing Huh? )

You may have to make some phone calls to check around first, so you can ask for a specific Rheumy. This still would be your best choice for a managing physician.

If insurance is involved, you may need to check with them about going out of your physician network if the only FMS doctors are not in your plan. Tell them that you have a condition that requires the knowledge of this particular doctor and they will usually allow an override for the referral. And just so you know, if your doctor refuses to give you a referral, you can go directly to your insurance company with good cause and they will bypass your PCP altogether - I have done this before.

I just got a phone call telling me my g.p. has a medical emergency and they do not know when he will be back.I am really concerned for him. He works in a medical center where he is allowed 15 min. for each patient. When I saw him a few weeks ago I said " it`s really sad that medicine has come to this" and he looked me in the eyes and said "yes it is"and then hurried off to his next patient. He is a young doctor and I am afraid for his mental condition. As he said "he does`nt make the rules" the medical center does. He could not afford to go out on his own so he has no choice. It is not fair, the restrictions they put on their doctors. It has to be very stressful for them.I`m sure they would like to do their work and treat their patients at a slower pace and be more thorough.

doesn't have a clue. Insist on a referral to a rheumy of your choice within your plan. If he gives you a problem, call your insurance plan & do a formal complaint. He can't treat you worse than he already is, so if he chooses not to see you, you're probably better off. There are good docs out there, just hard to find them. Good luck. dolsgirl

    Hi Lane,
Well ta 4 replying, ive had soo many replies.
After bein turned down once by doc ive made 2nd apt to try again,so lets see how i get on this time?
I wonder if docs can see the desperation in our eyes when we ask for referrals?
I just think they dont have time & because they dont suffer from these DD"s,they have no idea of what were goin through.
Take care im thinkin of you.
