THANKS TO ALL WHO ANSWERED MY QUESTION ABOUT PAIN CLINICS. SOME WERE POSITIVE ANSWERS,AND SOME WERE NEGATIVE,I MIGHT GIVE IT A SHOT.AS WELL AS ALL THE OTHER MUSCLE ACHES,PAINS, ALL OVER MY BODY,I ALSO HAVE SEVERE EARACHES, HEADACHES, AND JAW ACHES. I MEAN ALMOST EVERY DAY NOW. IT USE TO COME AND GO,BUT I THINK ITS HERE TO STAY THIS TIME. THATS WHY I WAS WANTING TO KNOW WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GO TO GET THE RIGHT KIND OF PAIN MEDICINE,I DON`T CARE WHAT THEY CALL IT,AS LONG AS IT HELPS. I HAVE HAD TO DOUBLE UP ON MY LORTABS THIS MONTH,I CAN ONLY TAKE 2 A DAY,WELL I USE TO GET BY WITH 2 BUT I CAN`T NO MORE,I ALSO TAKE ULTRAM,ITS NOT WORKING EITHER ANYMORE,BUT I KNOW MY DOCTOR,HE WILL HAVE HEART FAILURE,IF I MENTION ANY THE DRUGS I`VE HEARD ABOUT ON HERE,HE WOULDN`T PRESCRIBE OXYCONTIN OR ANY OTHER OPIAD LIKE THAT. HE HONESTLY WOULD CROAK. AND HE MIGHT CUT ME COMPLETELY OFF ANYTHING,THEN I WOULD CROAK.ITS BETTER TO HAVE A LITTLE THAN NONE AT ALL. I EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT PRINTING OUT ONE OF THESE SHEETS ON THIS MESSAGE BOARD,WHERE WE TALK ABOUT DOCTORS AND PHARMACISTS ATTITUDES ON DRUGS AND THAT THEY THINK WE`RE ALL JUNKIES WAITING FOR OUR NEXT FIX. I MIGHT JUST DO THAT. KNOWING HIM THE WAY I DO,HE`S SO BUSY WITH 1000 PATIENTS,OR IT SEEMS LIKE THAT MANY, HE WOULDN`T TAKE THE TIME TO READ IT. I GOT A FEELING A SHOWDOWN WITH HIM IS FORTH COMING. I HAVE AN APPT. ON JUNE 27TH WITH HIM,BUT I`M GOING TO BE OUT OF MY PILLS BY NEXT WEEK, I CAN`T HELP IT,WHEN YOU HURT LIKE WE DO ITS GOTTOPSOMETIME GETRELIEF WHEN 1 PILL DOESN`TVEN TOUCH THE PAIN ANYMORE.NJE THIS MESSAGE BOARD IS TRICKY TO WRITE ON SOMETIME.

I had the same problem, holding head up is difficult for me so I was tensing all the muscles as well. Had trigmemenial neuralgia too.

Dentist made me a soft appliance which I wore day and night to start with and then just at night. I also recognised what I was doing and learnt to relax and rest the neck muscles more.

In yoga one is taught, in a relaxed way, to drop and relax the shoulders to increase their distance from the ears. That helps too.

These things really helped. Now I only occassionally get this problem and know what to do about it so it never lasts for long.

    Cheers

THANKS BUT I ALREADY TRIED THAT 2 YEARS AGO. I WOULD TAKE IT OUT OF MY MOUTH IN MY SLEEP,NEVER KNOWING ONCE ALL NIGHT LONG THAT I HAD DONE THIS,I WOULD FIND IT EVERY MORNING EITHER BY THE BED, UNDER THE BED, THROWN AWAY ACROSS THE ROOM. MY HUSBAND SAID HE SAW ME JERK IT OUT OF MY MOUTH MORE THAN ONCE AND SLING IT AS FAR AS I COULD,LOL FUNNY BUT TRUE,HE SAID I NEVER WOKE UP WHILE I WAS DOING IT. FINALLY IT GOT WORN OUT BEING THROWN OUT AND EVENTUALLY STEPPED ON AND PULVERIZED. SO THAT WAS THE END OF THAT. ANYBODY ELSE GOT ANY ADVICE ON THIS JAW AND EAR PAIN,IT IS GETTING VERY BAD. NJE

Sadly, I suffer daily with this horrible pain. I have severe TMJ as well as FM. I have had two jaw surgeries and they just lead to more jaw surgeries. As a matter of fact, I need another one, but I am not ready right now to go through with it. The ear, jaw and head pain is HORRIBLE. Some days I just cry from the pain. My Vicoprofen doesn't touch it. BenGay and Tiger Balm hardly help, heat and cold are a waste anymore, massage just causes more pain. Like others have said. Try to find some relief now before it gets worse because once it does there is usually very little to turn it around ... at least that I have found. If you have any questions, I will be happy to give my experience. Hang in there.

MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP YOU. ITHOUGHT THAT ALL I HAD GOING ON WITH MY EAR AND NECK WAS CMP, THE SCM TRIGGER POINT, BUT IT TURNS OUT THAT I HAVE A MASTOID DISEASE.

THE EARACHES AND JAW, NECK, AND THROAT PAIN ARE BEING CAUSED BY THIS. EITHER DIRECTLY, OR BY THE FMS AND CMP.

I'M STILL WAITING ON MY HMO, UNBEIEVEABLE HOW LONG THEY TAKE, TO GET SOME MRI'S DONE.

THE 2 I HAD TAKEN BACK IN MAY OF 01, SHOWED THE MASTOID DISEASE, BUT THE STUPID NERUO, NEVER FOLLOWED UP ON IT.

SO I'M STILL IN PAIN 3 YEARS LATER, FROM THE ONSET OF THE FIRST ATTACK, WHEN MY EAR CLOSED FOR OVER 2 MONTHS, AND I HAD HEADACHES, JAW ACHES, IA ALSO THOUGHT IT WAS PROBABLY SINUIS PROBLEMS.

YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT WHY YOU ARE HAVING SO MUCH PAIN IN THAT AREA, SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED A NEW DOCTOR.
ANY DOCTOR WHO DOSEN'T BELIEVE IN YOUR PAIN IS NOT ON YOUR SIDE. A CAREGIVER MEAN'S THEY CARE HE SURE DOSEN'T SOUND LIKE HE DOES.

HOPE YOU GET SOME PAIN RELIEF SOOM

Yeah, have what you describe. I had it under control at one time, with a TMJ doctor, took Ultrama and Skelaxin for the pain. It really helped.

For the last two weeks, been waking up, falling asleep with a migraine, sometimes it eases in mid day or so. The pain starts in my jaw, to the ear, then up in my head.

The TMJ doc said I grind my teeth at night.. Can tell by my teeth that I have been doing it for years.

Suggested a mouth appliance.. Well.. I cannot afford one, so I suffer.

i had the same problem as you a long while back ,thank god.
i had acupuncture done that helped alot.also physio.i found massaging the part that hurt and i think putting ice on the sore area helped.also...this is the most important...avoid eating crunchy, chewy food.even sandwiches or hamburgers that are too thick.popcorn or apples are out.atleast untill you have the pain under control.
when this happened to me it is like the muscle is in spasim.maybe a muscle relaxin might help with it?try ice tho that should help.
    sorry about spelling arrears.
hope this helps you out,it worked great for me!

nje, I have had jaw pain for years. I had all kinds of tests done on my jaw and was told I have TMD, not TMJ. It means that my jaw problems stem from the muscles not the joint. I had several different appliances made and I, like you, took them out at night in my sleep. One of them I had high hopes for because it went on my bottom teeth and it fit tightly. But I took that one off in my sleep too. Finally, I saw an orthodontist who was trying some unconventional things. He added what he called steps on my back bottom teeth and on the back of my front teeth so I would not be able to clench my jaw. It worked great. The steps on my back teeth have worn completely off but the ones behind my front teeth are still there. I have started to have trouble with jaw pain again since the back ones wore off but it's still nothing like it was before I had this done about 8 or 9 years ago. Hopefully, I'll have money at some point in the future and I can see him again.
Anyway, something like that might help you.

I had the kind of earache, headache, jaw pain etc...for many years that you have. I've had many jaw splints along with pain medicine and surgery. What I've learnt the hard way that when you treat a symptom instead of the cause of your problem the symptoms will occur over and over again. No matter how many splints, meds, and surgeries if you don't get to the bottom of the real problem and solve that it will reoccur.

Jaw pain is a symptom of FM and the FM muscle problems especially in the facial area are caused by bacterial infections producing toxins usually comming from the sinus. One way to test this is to buy a bottle of saline nasal spray available at almost any drug or grocery. Use it 4 times a day. If you pain significently improves within a few days you have found the source. Then get a MRI of the paranasal sinuses.

Treatment is another story, but you will have made the first step to real recovery. Type in "McGregor's Thesis" in search for further explaination.

    Wishing you wellness.

    nje,
you asked about meds that could help.my doc gives me butalbital.its also known as phrenilin its specifically for the thing you described..it is a barbituate yet mild. my current doc has also refused to keep me on oxy shes a gp .my previous doc left the state to go back into anesthesiologyand went to a cash only basis at the clinic so im now on darvon soma and phrenilin..funny how im given long term propoxephene, (darvon) and it s not safe.oxy is safer .I went from working 40 hrs a week to 14..It is very hard to find a doc who isnt fearful..and concerned about the loss of their livelyhood..yet they dont grasp that we are losing our livelyhood and quality of life.. Be patient with yourself and very gentle in how you percieve this situation. I too run out of meds very soon..and have told my doc..she says..she cant prescribe more.and I say I know I just want you to know that the pain is worsening.
there can be more pain as you see the meds dwindling and the weeks left to count till the next visit .
and yes when it hurts ..you HAVE to stop it.. and a decent doc will understand tolerance is not addiction..

This is a Self Treatment that has worked for me ,,,hope it

works for yousss... Son's girl friend had seen many Docs,

for TMJ finally saw a specialist who taught her this

First feel the outer part of your face push with finger tips to find the painful presure points.

Now GO & WASH YOUR HANDS

Stick you finger in your mouth & find the painful points they are usually in the furthest part of the jaw.

Reach in under & arround your teeth once you locate a pain point push & rub.

Be careful not to over do the massage. Start slowly & gently

as you find out after a few days how much presure you can

tolerate then you can do the massage harder.

    Good Luck,
    Blessings,,,Day

I have had jaw, earache, and neck pain for quite awhile now. At one of my routine dentist visits about 10 years ago, I was informed that I had TMJ. he jaw pain went away, and I concluded the dentist didn't know what he was talking about. Well, it's back in full force. I feel like my jaw is going to lock up. I try to relax my jaw by holding my mouth wide open. This might sound weird, but if I take sinus relief medicine, my jaw, headache, and slight ear pain go away. I have so many little aches and pains, that I have given up going to the doctor. I can't afford it, even with insurance. I pick the worst ailment, and work on it. Right now I am focusing on my mental health.

I have pain and fullness in my ears. Also feels like they are draining. Thought maybe I had an ear infection brewing but they are clear. Dr has dismissed it so far.
I am on ultraset which is like taking air. The neuro I saw (long enough to send me from his office crying so hard I could barely breathe) laughed at me and used the words "pill searching" cause I said the ultraset doesn't do anything. And he also called me "crazy" and kept asking me how much I drank. Did not believe me I didn't drink. Would not tell me what my MRI said. Did find out my cerebellar tonsils are 5mm but they (quacks of life) say this wont cause me any problems.
I clench my jaws tight all the time too. especially at night. Have noticed that my mandible (lower jaw) sits farther back than it use to. I can't even conceive going to the dentist at this time because I see the others so often.

I just saw your post. It caught my eye because I suffered for a long time with jaw pain and earaches...was finally dx with TMJ, fitted for a bite-splint to wear basically 24 hours a day. To make a long story short...after countless trips back to the dr because of problems with the splint they finally did a panoramic x-ray of my mouth. It turned out that it was not TMJ at all but a condition called Eagle's Syndrome. Basically it is when the styloid bones become calcified and the calcification causes the bones to become elongated causing severe pain in the jaw and ears and even sometimes...like in my case...pain in my neck down to my shoulders making it painful to turn my head. This can happen on one side or on both sides. I had it on both sides. If this is not caught by a very intuitive dr it can become very serious as the calcified bones become longer they can pinch or puncture the carotid sp? arteries in the neck. This can only be found using the panoramic x-ray.

I had to have surgery to shorten the styloid bones as the calcification had caused them to become quite long.

I am not trying to scare you but just want you be aware of this condition. It can't hurt to just have it ruled out.

Best of luck to you and I hope your pain is a bit better.

    Peace and Love,

    Debbie

    Hi NJE

Just want you to know I suffer from FM. The headaches, ear pain and neck to shoulder are so intolerable sometimes you want to scream. But.....I also work for a substance abuse center and Oxy is the worst thing ever. It's synthetic heroine and highly addictive. Not worth getting hooked on because when your doctor stops giving it to you...well some people go to the streets for it and then it controls you. So please be very careful.

My doctor gives me neurontin ..it's also used for seizures but it helps with the neuro pain in the ears and eases things a bit. You might want to read up on it. I take butapital for the headaches along with it at night.
I also do yoga stretches. Will absolutely kill you at first ..but one day at a time...I am still able to tolerate work but when I get home can't even bend my kneck for hours if at all.
I am 53 and not so young in case your wondering.....but let me tell you. I will not let this control my life......I will learn to control it!!
Good luck to you and God Bless
    Gold
