I am wondering if anyone else lives here, I am in Oshawa, and Iam trying to see if there is a support group, I can't seem to find one when I google it, also trying to see if there is a doctor someone knows of that they can recommend for Chronic Fatigue

    Hi Maria

I am in Courtice (just outside Oshawa). We have a support group here that meets once a month at the Loblaws across from the Oshawa Centre. It's fibro support, not sure if chronic fatigue too, I'll ask.

I have not been to a meeting, as I find it hard to get around, but am in touch by email.

As far as doctors go, well search my post to find my experience, I go to Toronto.

I will try to find out when next meeting is if you want to go.

Maria, Welcome to the board. I live in Toronto and I see Dr Bested, whom you have likely heard about. Her clinic runs support and education groups as well as a Support Group using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. You don't have to be a patient of hers to get into the first group, not sure about the CBT one.

Her clinic is in the very east end of Toronto and she has quite a few patients from the Oshawa area. You can get more information on the clinic from the web site

She also has a fairly new book out which is available on-line and at the clinic.

I hope you find some good information on the board and some good medical support.

I'm up on the north shore of Lake Superior in Ontario, I believe there a quite a few Ontarians on this board, a few from Ottawa I know for sure...

Here's a couple of good Canadian (non-profit) websites...both have lists of local support groups.

    Hope this helps! nature

Hi it's nice to meet you!!!!
I have been to see many doctors, I used to live in St.Catherines and saw quite a few there. One walk-in clinic
doctor that I used to see would tell me because I had five kids that was why I was soo tired all the time, he wouldn't
listen to me, I tried telling him it was a debilitating exhaustion that I was having ,just wouldn't listen!!!
When we moved to Oshawa about two years ago same thing happened try to get a family doctor couldn't find one so again
went to see several clinic doctors, can't get any where with them. Finally my brother who lives in Toronto went and talked
to his family doctor to get me in to see him, and he got me in.
I have seen him and HE has referred me to an internal medicine
specialist, her name is Dr.Joanne McDonald, but he referred me to her in the summer it is now six months and I still have not heard from her office to get in to see her.

Have you heard of her? I have not heard of your doctor.
My family doctor the one in Toronto there he is thinking
that I have Chronic Fatigue but he didn't know who to send me to at first, he was going to refer me to a rhumatoid specialist but that doctor said that he wouldn't be of any help to me he suggested the internal medicine doctor.
Dr. McDonald. Which the family doctor told me she had a bad
bed side manners!!!Lovely, just what I wanted to hear right?

Anyways, Iam waiting for her office to call, and then see what she has to say.

Thanks for the info on your Doctor I will be checking out the website for sure!!!
do you need a referral to get in to see her for some diagnoses?
Hope to hear from you soon!
    Thanks Maria

Hi there nice to meet you!!
Who do you see in Toronto?
I have been referred to a internal medicine specialist by my family doctor, don't think she is a Chronic Fatigue doc tho.
My family doc thinks I have Chronic Fatigue don't know if that means I have been diagnosed with it or what?
I have been waiting for the specialist's office to call me for an appointment, it has been about six months now that I have been waiting.
So do you have to be diagnosed with Fibromyalgia to join the support group?
By the way the internal medicine doctor's name is DR. Joanne McDonald have you heard of her?
Thanks so much for the info.
i will be waiting for your email back to see when the next meeting is!
Hope to hear from you soon!

    Hi roge,
I don't recall specifically who, but you can do a "title and content" search for "Ottawa" and a lot of posts pop up...I lived in Ottawa for 18 years and just recently moved back up north. I had an awesome GP in Ottawa who I miss SO much!!! She is on maternity leave now, though.

There are also quite a few FM support groups in Ottawa; check the websites I posted earlier if you're looking for a group, I know there's one in Nepean and I believe one recently started up in Kanata.

    cheers, nature

Hi Maria, You might also check out the ME Assn of Ontario at They have a doctor referral service. They get names from other patients. They also have a great newsletter.
You do need a referral for Dr Bested's office. If you have seen the website you will see that she and Dr Beaulne, a Naturopath work together.
I'm glad you are getting lots of ideas here. Good luck with it all.

I haven't heard yet when the next meeting is, I'll post when I find out.

There are also some resources on the Ontario Fibromylgia website.

My family doctor actually diagnosed me January 2006. I lived in Toronto and she was my doctor for 20 years and she is an excellent doctor. It is just too difficult for me to get there, cause I don't drive and the train, subway, etc, would take about 2-3 hours.

Still, since I haven't had much luck out here with the doctors so I find a way.

I just found out that there are warm water aquatics for reasonable price at the Durham Aquatic Centre for those of us with arthritis, fibro, cfs and other issues(on Townline Road), you could do a search.

Dr Bested is actually speaking there on the 17th. The cost is $5.00.

Good Luck, will keep in touch.

I did a search for the Aquatics Centre but I couldn't find it.
Is it here in Oshawa or in Ajax. I have only been in Oshawa for a couple of years and I don't know where too many places are. It would be so good to go and hear Dr.Bested.It would be good to know what time she is speaking too.

Dr. Bested is speaking at the Aquatics Centre at 600 Townline Road here in Oshawa from 1:00 to 3:30 on the 17th. You have to buy tickets in advance.

We are not supposed to post websites here, but I will say it is dwwap dot com.

Post back if you get it or not.

I am going to try and get into an aquatics class there.

Thanks for the info, I did get the website,I noticed that they have a different address though for where Dr. Bested is speaking at least that's what I am understanding, the address is under the date and time.

BTW how does someone get diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue my Family doctor just kinda suggested it to me as he was looking up my symptoms on the internet, I don't know if that's a diagnoses or what, he said do you think you may have Chronic Fatigue?
