I'VE ONLY BEEN ON THE WEBSITE ABOUT A MONTH NOW. WHEN I FIRST CAME ON I READ A COUPLE MESSAGE ABOUT PEOPLE WHO HAD CALLED THE DR. PHIL AND OPRAH SHOW. I THOUGHT THAT WAS A GREAT IDEA. I WAS WONDERING IF YOU GOT ANY REPLIES AND IF SO WHAT WERE THEY?
I THINK IT WOULD BE WORTH TRYING AGAIN, BUT I'M NOT SURE HOW TO GO ABOUT IT. DID ANYONE TRY ROSIE? EVEN THOUGH HER SHOW IS FINISHED WE COULD STILL TRY HER MAGAZINE.
ONE OF THE DR.'S FROM THE GOOD DR. LIST MENTIONED HE WAS ON GOOD MORNING AMERICA, I JUST WISHED WE COULD GET THE WORD OUT SO MAYBE A FEW PEOPLE COULD UNDERSTAND WHAT WE ARE ALL DEALING WITH.
    ANY SUGGESTIONS???????

only one of us got an answer and she said that Oprah is of the school of thought hat FMS is in the mind and not real.We tried Montel because he has MS I believe that;'s the one and again no answer. I guess he has his cause to cover. I don't rember if anyone contacted Rosie. Maybe, we should call doctor Phil on his new show. You are so right we need more notice. We tried about 2 1/2 years ago. Maybe she's changed her mind.

Thanks for posting this, Kim and Gary

The last issue will be Dec, her show is off the air, Dr Phil is a harda** who seems to me (my humble opinion) to have no compassion, or very little, I have never seen any from him and from what I understand both he & Oprah think it is all in our heads.

My suggestion: It needs to be a "news" story, such as some of you people who have tested positive for Lyme or even better mycoplasma, the Govt created it and yet we can't even get SSDI, we are the ones who paid into it for heaven's sake, they poison us in various ways and when we suffer we are on our own, I suggest sending factual information only to Fox News, namely Greta Van Sustern, or MSNBC Phil Donahue.

    Just a thought.

He doesn't do medical disorders/diseases. He deals strictly in human relationships and problems. If you have a problem with hubby spending too much time at the office or in the garage, Phil's your man, but he doesn't know squat about medical issues and I doubt if he wants to head that way.

People think he's hard because he tells it like it is. He tells us what we need to know in order to stop the crap and fix our lives. He doesn't believe in wasting precious time, because life is so short. He's my kinda guy.....shoots straight from the hip! I've watched this man on tv regularly for the past 5 years and he's one of the most compassionate professionals I've ever seen.

this may not be allowed on this board, it may be a chit chat reply, but i had to bring it to light....
Did anyone ever notice that waaaaay back when Oprah first came onto the scene. she interviewed ppl who were "everyday" ppl and "normal" and "the neighbor next door" types?
Now that she has mega millions, she only has on stars and other big name celebrities?
Maybe if we find a celebrity with fibro, she will open her eyes again to the world of us everyday, normal, non-million making fibromytes.
...guess some of have to be rich or pop out 7 kids at a time to get any recognition from the "land-of-oprah"..a feat which i think i'll pass...

    God bless

I just shook my head in disbelief when I read that one person had heard back from the Oprah show and what their response was. Oprah obviously is clueless and uninformed about this illness. I have always felt that unless you have LIVED with someone that has this illness you can't really understand it. My close family and friends don't, my daughter, 11 years old, has it. If Oprah is insinuating that "it is in everyone's head" and refuses to do a show on it than shame on her. I guess she would have to get it, to believe how real it is. If she is such a skeptic than why not have a debate about it or something. Her not recognizing this as a legitimate illness is her problem. Regardless of what she thinks there are still a lot of people in severe pain and disabled. Lives are destroyed, people have comitted suicide and the number of cases are growing tremendously. Bottom line, one of Oprah's reasons for her fame has been built on helping people get their lives back, Or else why would so many of us have written in and turned to her for help. So no matter whether she thinks it is in the head or not she is doing absolutely nothing to help these people because of her uninformed opinion. I guarantee if she did a show and had audience full of FM sufferers and doctors she would change her tune. Don't just rule out such a major issue in so many peoples lives because of your own opinion. I have lost any respect I had left for her, she has always come across to me as a "know it all", opinionated person, because she overcame her past. My child was 7 when she started symptoms. A loving compassionate, honor roll student. Her life now consists of pain, sickness and school. She can't keep on in school because she misses so much of it as a result. She has no fun or friends. She needs me around the clock,I don't have a life either. I spend my life at the doctors and ER. I have all I can do to go to the grocery store. I am not complaining, I am just stating how this has affected my life too. I don't mind not having a life, my life is her. I just get so discouraged about her future. I can't keep a job as a result of her needs, not to mention my depression. I am doing this alone. I will be submitting a copy of this letter to the Oprah show and it will be the last one they ever get from me. I will not beg for their help for my child anymore.

I completely agree that we need more info out there, it seems like this is a hidden problem but the last thing we need is someone to put it out there and say what we all have heard so many times, pain meds don't help, you just need to exercise, you just need to change your attitude, you just need to get out of bed, get in the shower, get on with your day, what is is that is bothering you deep down inside that is causing this???? Blah blah blah. It would make it so much worse if someone really credible would jump on the issue & display totoal ignorance.

I have very strong doubts that Oprah would make a comment one way or another on the validity of FM. She's too much a wise bird to say something like that publicly and she is not afraid to admit she is not knowledgable about something. I just don't believe she said she thought this was in our heads. That's just not Oprah's style. She's also too intelligent to come to a conclusion like that without herself having some real proof, and of course, there is none.

I have written to Oprah a few times on this topic. I haven't ever received a response. I had felt that if Oprah could put it out there & have FMS/CFS specialists on the panel as well as patients, that people might just get a glimse of what we do go through. Everyday is a struggle. I think that she must have some type of interest in it, as it's one of the links on her site. I hope that she didn't say what someone felt they heard. I have always felt that Oprah was open minded & willing to listen. I hope that I'm right & before she retires her talk show, we have a voice for the world to hear & try to understand. dolsgirl

Seriously, this is an *opportune* time to correspond (or try to) with Oprah, what with her just recieving the "BOB HOPE HUMANITARIAN AWARD" and all......? I in no way understate any of the wonderful gifts Oprah has bestowed upon the world, BUT....It's a sad joke for someone who won't listen, or even try to understand, but as I always said to my docs when they bickered behind my back or said "Now WHAT can we do for you?!"
GOD FORBID YOU GET THIS ILLNESS.

From all of the info I have packed into my brain (before and after the fog LOL!) this illness is growing in numbers and leaps and bounds. We (CFIDS AND FMS) are a group in which *our* numbers alone beat: AIDS, Breast Cancer, Uterine Cancer and so on and so on.....that is staggering, my friends. Someone will take notice....I bet if Gayle (Oprahs best friend or Steadman, her boyfriend) were to "*all in their heads* come down with this" - it would be a totally different story OR the same result as Elizabeth Taylor and Elton John with their AIDS Foundations...Who knows maybe more....? *sigh*

But like I said before.....GOD FORBID YOU GET THIS ILLNESS.

PLease don't misunderstand what I suggested, I di dnot mean that we do not need awareness, we do, definitely. I am just afraid of some of the publicity we do get. If Oprah thinks this is all in our head she would make it worse for us. We are growing by leaps & bounds and I have never in my life believed in conspiracy theories until these past few months with this DD, I do not understand for the life of me why we don't see this info out there. The few times I have seen it in a magazine it has been a hysterical reaction on our part. I will go to the Oprah site also right now & put in my 2c worth. It just does not make sense to me that we are stuffed in the closet like we don't exist.

I would almost bet the ranch that Oprah didn't say that... I've watched her since day one and know better. You can't watch a woman every day for years and years and not get to know the real her.

I don't think we've been stuffed in a closet, so to speak, but we do have to realize that the Oprah show gets hundreds of emails a day, thousands a month, and everybody wants their cause at the top of the list. Just because they haven't done a show on FM, doesn't mean they don't care, or aren't interested. Could be there are more important issues, or issues they think would draw more viewers, and when it comes down to it, they have to please the majority. Who knows if a show on FM will be done or not? It's not up to Oprah 100%. She has alot of producers that make these decisions and do the research for the shows. I wonder if she even makes any decisions at all on what shows they have on. I do know that on occasion, she'll suggest one that she feels strongly about, but don't know if she actively decides the shows subject matter. There's a whole lot more going on behind the Oprah scenes than we are aware of, so let's not have knee jerk reactions and brand Oprah with a "she doesn't care or get it" label. This woman has done TONS for many, MANY different causes, and continues to do so as we speak. You don't win the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award by "not" helping people.

and have heard nothing...its only been about a week or so, but I'm really not optimistic. I mixed the husband problem WITH the illness in hopes for a response! I told him how hard it was for some husbands (such as mine) to deal with their wife's chronic pain/fatigue. Oh well, it was worth a try.

I didn't know which post to put this on the Oprah or Dr. Phil, but this is concerning Oprah,Salley, Geraldo and all the people that were on talk TV about 18 to 20 yrs. ago. My brother was on all those shows as a "Sex Addict". I could try writing to Oprah that I want equal time as my sex addict brother, anyway it might get an answer. My problem is I have only recently been diagnosised and don't have all the statistics and stuff that need to go in a letter to Oprah. If someone wants to help me write something I would be happy to try that stradigy. Just a thought.

Oprah probably only sees 1/10,000th of the mail she gets, same for all other national hosts. Why not start smaller; most local news programs have 'medical minutes' or something that deals with these issues. If enough smaller stations start showing blurbs the subject tends to get noticed by the major media.

Also, write your local papers about the conditions. Check your local library for info on how to write a press release. Especially smaller papers are always needing fillers. If you're in a support group you're probably guaranteed coverage plus a specialist opinion or two.

If anyone on this list has media connections, or has done PR work maybe they'll have time to co-ordinate a project of this size. Like breast cancer, and other media topics, someone, somewhere started locally and grew.

Remember (can't-damn fog) that Tom Hanks movie where he played the mentally challenged guy-shrimp fisherman. Remember when he started running, no reason but everyone followed and formed a reason. Sorry, I ramble and can't make it snap tonight - hopefully someone gets the idea.

    Good luck!

Dear Anne , your message about not forgetting the power of prayer was misleading in my estimation. I went to your site and there was nothing about prayer in there. What I did see was your statement that you had the cure for FM which included several over the counter meds' and some prescripts.
I was asked to email you for additional info. If you are not selling something why do you need our add? Why the mystery? Why not just share with all of us here on the board your cure? Sorry don't want to be sceptical, but too many of us have been lead down the briar path?
I am intersted in your response.
I would have liked to see something about how prayer has brought about the strenght to handle this illness and the hope of God's cure.
    Sincerely

She will never do another show about FMS, for she had already done one a few years back. We had an woman, who was an Scientist along with her daughter. I feel for them both even now. The Scientist was explaining the symptoms to her as well as her daughter - then the one symptoms she mentioned was forgetting things or would get confused during an conversation, having to stop and try to remember what she was talking about. Her lousy comment was " Well, we won't want that to happen so we'll go to our next guest". That was pretty much the words she said.

Do we want to kid ourselves when she is one of the most powerful women in the world, that she would do an show about our illness? She'll probably have influence over Dr. P.

Montel did an show on illnesses and one his guest was an actress, who claimed that she had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome but was cure now. Well, watching her you could tell she had difficulty thinking. I felt for her because she was at that time unable to say she had CFS. I don't know where Montel stands on FMS or CFS but do know he's an big believer in gene therapy for illnesses. On an show he had Syliva on , an woman asked her about her illness - I can't remember her exact question but it was about her health. Syliva said she had FMS and to stop taking sugar in her diet and her would become well again. I looked and there is sugar in pretty much everything these days. So that would be an challenge for most of us. I know I have tried I'm still looking for things without sugar in them.

Leeza done an show on FMS before she went off the air and had great guest on with FMS and she didn't slight or put us down not once. She was gracious, kind and made sure the public got what our illness entails. She would do it if she still had her show if the powers to be didn't stop her. She is now on Extra and maybe Leeza Gibbons would do an piece on our illnesses and what we go through each day.

    That's my 2 cents worth....
