I live in the UK and am interested in the idea of a health drop-in centre where ME could be given a priority. People could chat about it, get info and ME could be given a proper forum. Does anybody (US or UK) know anything about this sort of thing? There is no support group in my area, but I'm thinking anyway that perhaps more could be achieved in a drop-in centre of this kind.

just thought I,d drop by to say hello. How are you doing?
Nice idea but I dont think that the nhs has got that far yet. Although I did read somewhere in either the guardian or observer about the proposed reforms to the nhs whereby they were wanting to have a sort of super gp based in clinis. But as you know it would take years to get off the ground.
Last year I contacted my local health authority here in newcasatle to ask them for a copy of their treatment guidelines for ME [I have both cfs and fms]and it was very depressing reading. Basically it is based on the hmo report which the government commissioned with prof simon wessely a prominent member. It stated that although it was to stressed that this was a 'real' condition that gps should not be sending people off to different specialists etc and that the treatment was graded exercise and maybe cognitive behaviour therapy.
There is a cfs hospital somewhere in the uk that you could ask your gp to ask your health authority if it will allow you to be treated outside of your own area. This is tricky given the guidelines above especially if you have a diagnosis. But it might be worth a try.
sorry I couldnt be more positive. I too dream up ways of offering better treatment and would love to see them come true. But it seems that the majority of the decisions for the nhs are related are made by cost and we both know where that will take us.
    love therese
