EFFEXOR XR........... for fibromyalgia

Discussion in 'Fibromyalgia Main Forum' started by fibrobutterfly, Jan 10, 2007.

  1. I know alot of people had a hard time going off it, but I was wondering, I was on it for a couple years and felt better , I was only on 75 mg. I am thinking of going back on it, as I haven't been sleeping lately and am totally exhausted, my dr. said its because I went off it. I did it on my own, duh. Has anyone had GOOD LUCK taking it? Why the bad rap, do you think its because going off it is hard or just because people don't want to take anti deppressants for fibro?
Lordy I just want my life back.

I do take Effexor XR daily, 75mg and have no problems on it. (3 1/2 years)

It does NOT help me with sleep at all though, so I take 125mg of Trazadone for that.

Why did you take yourself off of it? I do believe the bad rap is well deserved though and luckily enough for me, I haven't had a reason to stop taking it yet.

For now it works for me...

    Hi Fibrobutterfly,

I'll start off by saying that I've been on just about every
AD that has come on the market...none ever helped me (some actually made me worse, like being very aggressive). Effexor XR was the only med that ever helped...probably like 40%-60% improvement.

I was on the highest recommended dose. The problem was that after I would be on it for maybe 1 or 2 years, it's efficacy would start to decline and I would be started on something else. I guess I'm fortunate, I've never had a problem going off Effexor...didn't even know that it was a big concern for a lot of people, until I started reading horror stories of withdrawal here on the message board.

After trying other AD's, I would usually ask my Doc if I could go back on Effexor because it at least helped somewhat. I always experienced a lot of nausea the first 2 weeks of starting it then no problem.

It never helped with insomnia. BTW, I finally was diagnosed with Bipolar II (hypomania), so no wonder 20+ years of ADs didn't help me!! Now I'm on Lamictal, and overall it has been great...still have my "moods" and some dark days but I'm feeling better emotionally than I can remember.

    Good Luck with your decision......Jill...........

I have tried many different sleeping meds. It is "trial and error" what works best and even at that, I alternate what I take.

I have prety good luck with Restoril 15 mg. - sometimes I use 20 mg. I have also tried Lunesta and it also works ok.

I use Ambien 10 mg but it is not my favorite - it does not last all night and if I use the Ambien CR - I am too tired the next day.

You can also try the "over the counter" sleep aid which is the same as Benadryl 25 mg. It will also make you sleep.

If you are not sleeping, I would definitely take something. We all want to feel like we are getting well and don't need anything - I am always feeling that way, but I really do have to sleep or I will get sick.

I saw a new doctor the other day who is infectious disease specialist and works exclusively with CFS and Fibro patients. He did not like Ambien at all and said I needed something better. He gave me a drug called Seroquel.

He said to start with 25 mg and increase to 50 mg eventually. This doctor really understands CFS - in fact he diagnosed I am infected in my digestive system with Coxsackie virus. That is a whole other story but the sleep med he highly recommended was Seroquel.

When I pulled it up on the internet it appears that drug is used for Bipolar and Schizophrenia. I am kind of afraid to try it.....

Have you ever checked out the website remedyfind? When I am looking for firsthand experiences about meds I usually find good info there.

Hope you find what you need

I was so scared to take it after reading all the horror stories, but I got so sick I gave it a try last April. I was in so much pain and could hardly leave the house cause of panic attacks.

First 2 weeks were awful, terrible nausea.

Then one day I woke up, pain was virtually gone and I had a spring in my step. I have also not gained any weight on it.

I find the soreness creeping back in, but the panic attacks and depression are no more.

Unfortunately, it does not help my sleeping. I do take it in the morning and take lorazepam at night for sleeping.

    Good Luck in your decisions.

I took effexor for 7 years, then I got a bad stmach flu and could hold down anything,. this is the way I got off my effexor. I had always heard it was hard to come off effexor too. Well it went so easy with the flu I stayed off.4 months later I was DX with Fibromyalgia. The Dr. put me on Cymbolta because it deals so well with pain control, and boy it did for me. My pain went from 100% to 20% dag gone good. I stayed on cymbalta for 3 1/2 month and talked to my Dr about the 30 lbs. I have gained since taking the cymbalta. He thought well if I did so well Effexor why not go back on it? As of 4 days now I am back on it and stable. My pain is not gone like with Cymbalta but I think it is still a week or two too early to tell. I have also swiched pain meds Oxycotin to Methadone. The Methodone has not helping much either yet as well. Good luck Ican;t say enough about Effexor!! It is good stay on it give it s chsnce take it consistantly

It always amazes me how different we all are! I tried Effexor XR and it didn't do anything for me. The only AD that has worked for me (and I've tried many) was cymbalta.

I noticed that one of the posters here has gained weight on cymbalta! I have lost 4 pounds in 2 months of being on cymbalta. And I don't need to lose weight! I don't know if it's the cymbalta, but I just don't have an appetite, especially at dinnertime. So I usually just eat an apple or have a v8 juice for dinner.

    Best of luck...

I have tried every A/D out there and the ONLY one that did anything for me is Effexor.

I am VERY sensitive to meds, so this surprises me

I sleep better, and the FMS pain is a LITTLE less.

I took it years ago and felt it wasn't helping me. So I went off of it

Then I realized that the time I felt my best was when I was on Effexor

I started taking it again in the fall, and I have been able to make it through SOME days without laying down which is a major accomplishment for me.

I still don't feel great, but a tad better

I need to fix my allergies, and I think I will feel alot better!

I haven't had any problems. I'm not sure why it gets a bad rap. I do know it's a bad idea to go off anything by yourself.
