I know some of you take this to help you sleep. I do too. Do you think it has helped with depression as well? If so, how many mgs do you take at night? Thanks for your help.

Too many side effects, and no relief. Sorry!

If I'm not mistaken, I think the dosage of Elavil is different for pain relief and sleep than it is for depression.

I started out with Elavil and only took what my doc called a "baby dose"! It was only 10 mg, but I was so sensitive to it, that I had to cut that tablet into fourths and take only a 1/4 tablet at night and I still slept forever!! LOL

It just made me too sleepy and I felt half asleep the entire next day, too, so I just changed to something else.

At the time, with such a low dose, I could not tell any difference in depression relief.

I have been taking 10mg elavil for years. It helps-I sleep good at night and wake up fresn. I am one of the lucky ones in that I dont suffer bad from fibromylgia. However, my husband and I recenly moved to Playa del Carmen Mexico and have disovered I cannot elavil there. I had no choice but stop taking it. Now I find myself two months later having trouble sleep at night and I am experiencing more and more pains here and there. The heat in Mexico has not helped and the recent suicide of a step son.

Could anyone recommend something else i could take besides elavil or possibly someone knows of the another name it comes under.

I am in the states now and may just need to find a dr and get a prescription filled here. Any advice would be appreciated

Generic for Elavil. Spelling may be wrong because I don't want to get up right now. I take 100 mgd for sleep. I don't know if it helps depression, but it was one of the earliest drugs for it. It has been a wonder drug for me. apparently I need large doses of all my scripts. It relaxes my muscles, you have to get used to it. If relaxing my muscles means less stress, then yes it helps w/ my depression. I hope it helps you also

Hello .. I take 75 mgs at night .. but I take other meds to help sleep .. zopiclone .. Lyrica has that positive affect for me , even though it doesn't help with pain ,, or the nerve pain ..
I found out how much amitriptilyne helped when one of my idiot specialists cut me down to 25 mgs ... the pain was outrageous and it really harmed what progressive ground I had achieved.
I'm one of the lucky ones that it helps a great deal.
    Good Luck !

My Rheumy put me on over a year ago - working slowly up to 75 mg a night with Flexirl which is my sleep magic - more often then not I sleep through the night - now mind you I get up at 5:00 am so I only get 6 hours so a night.

When I started on it he explained that the dosage to treat depression is 300 to 400 mgs a day. I can see a difference in my energy and moods but I think it is more from the sleep then the drug.

I take 75mg a night. I think it gives me restless leg syn. I asked about the depression because it seems I am less depressed. However, I take effexor also. Stay well.

OMG, I only take 10 mg a night and that's all I can take. I was originally given 25 mg but that knocked me out so bad i couldn't function the next day. It would be great if I could sleep 12-14 hours a night but that's just impossible with my life. I can't imagine you guys that take 100 mg a night! I would be comatose for a week!

Hi, I took this med---it made me see things that were not there---I never took it again.
I have pharmacy backround of 20 yrs and am knowledgeable of meds and I personally am afraid of Elavil--or amitripmilyline---is the generic...

If it works for you that is great---please let me know if I can help in any way---I have fibro for 4 yrs now----it has been a struggle every day...
