I was out of town at my moms last week and was constipated for some reason, and then it reversed itself....anyway I went to bed and woke up to use the bathroom and I had "pooped" in my pants! I had a pad on so most was on that but that has never happened ever nor since. Should I be ulta concerned? I haven't had time to even call a doctor as just got back home. I had taken 4 mg zanaflex and 1 mg clonopin (my usual dose) and went to sleep feeling like I could "go again". I have IBS.....This is so embarrassing. Since I do not seem to have lost control again I am not ultra worried but I do know my vagina is prolapsing from a hysterectomy and wonder if that may cause this? Yuk. Sorry for the gross details.

If I were you, I'd go to a physical therapist who specializes in the pelvic floor muscles. (if you don't already) She can create a personalized exercise plan for you.

Most larger towns have one or two of these specialists. They often advertise as treating "women's problems". But actually a lot of men go to them after prostate surgery too.

Having CFS can make a person's muscles weak, and that includes the core muscles. I'm sure having IBS on top of that is not great!

    Best wishes,

I was told to do pelvic floor exercises last time I went to gyn doc. Maybe I should remember to do them.

I was just reading about this and am now worried that I should call my doctor. I guess I will call my gastro doc tomorrow just to be on safe side.

    Hi NightnGale

I can certainly understand your embarrassment, but it's really important that you seek medical advice. On a lighter note; I had the same thing happen to me several months ago and fortunately for me, I was home in my own bed. My husband woke me up, and boy oh boy do I wish I had some Calgon at the time to TAKE ME AWAY! ha! ha! Anyway, if it's any consolation to you, it's never happened again. Good luck!

If it make you feel any better, about a month ago I was having a dream where I was on the toliet, but couldn't pee. When I woke up, I was in the process of wetting the bed. Boy was I paranoid after that.

I also suffer from IBS and frequently go between constipation and diarrhea. Luckily though, I haven't pooped the bed yet. I hope all goes well with your doctor.

It happened to me when I was... of all things... staying over at my husband's apartment in another city (we've been separated a long time and are now in the process of divorce).

OMG. Could it have happened at a worse time and place?

I was pretty worried for a while that it might be neurological or something, but after I thought about it I realized I'd taken my magnesium right before bed and it often gives me diarrhea. Needless to say I take it earlier in the day now!

That was months ago and it hasn't happened again.

first the constipation; then the watery diarrhea, and when that comes along there's no control of it. its like an explosion and very easily comes out on its own. there's no stopping it.

i guess the focus for us with the IBS is to find diet and supplement approaches that keep it under control. i've sent for stool analysis test that will give me a diagnostic analysis and suggestions to make corrections for what's wrong. i've done this once, and it gives a lot of information you can use. i want to heal my gut so i'm not, at times, its prisoner.
it's such a misery when it goes bad (the gut).
good luck- we need to fix our guts ! best, sascha

My IBS tends to happen more in the morning when I'm trying to get out of the house or when I'm at a store shopping.....then I have to spend forever in the restroom.

The other issue I have is having little control over my bladder which can be just as frustrating. One of my embarrasing times as an adult was when I was visiting my mom and we were at a hotel and I had one glass of wine with dinner and was relaxed and my mom and I were laughing on the way back to the hotel room........and I couldn't hold it in........talk about embarrased ~ Smile I always wear a pad every day now.

For all the replies! What a world of fun IBS. I did call the dr. office and they are supposed to call back one of these days....I do think it was a random thing now , I hope, looks like alot of folks suffer from this awful stuff!

oh hon...I could top you with stories that are much worse.
I have IBS with uncontrollable diarrhea. ZERO notice. I mean NONE. No cramping, no discomfort, no nothing beforehand. The pain afterwards was terrible however.

When I started taking pain medication - I couldn't believe it - my horrible episodies stopped! The constipation that it causes in many, finally made me 'normal'. Great side effect for me!

The gastro docs office called back and said since it was a single episode not to worry, but to call if it happens again and with any questions. I used to get awful stomack pain like I was in labor but not anymore. Glad the drugs are helping you there, that sounds awful to not have any warning! Mine usually hits early a.m if it is to be a bad day and sometimes I feel like I am actually sick with a stomach virus as I feel weak and tired too. Is this normal? Maybe it is time for another Dr. visit. (NOOOOO) Any other natural remedies or over the counter helps??? I will try the husk stuff. I have also had a recent mri of lower spine which showed my cauda equina area to be ok.

Hi - not sure if anyone is still following this thread but i thought i would respond anyway. I have a daughter server special needs including Cerebral Palsy. For years she had terrible constipation and they put her on glycolax more commonly known as Miralax. For the first time in her life i was not having to hold her down and force supposetories or ennimas on her. One does a day and she is as regular as she can be. Now how does that relate to FM? As a FM suffurer, i developed IBS. I remember my 30th birthday sitting on the toilet at 3 AM begging for God to strike me dead because i could not stand the pain from the constipation. I decided to try the Miralax. It works and now it is available over the counter - usually the cheapest is Walmart and Costco. My biggest thing is that i can not stand the taste of anything in my drinks. We Miralax is tasteless and completely disolves. I take it with chocolate milk right before bed. It is not perfect but it sure has made my life less painful in the bathroom. Goodnight to all.

    That was the last straw.

I immediately had the neurosurgeon schedule my spinal surgery.

I can live with and around peeing on myself but pooping has to be on MY terms only.

I'm praying for you that it's simple to remedy.

    Peace, RsW

For someone who has studied freud I would say you could have regressed to a childhood state since you were visiting your mom. It's a good sign. The you feel comfortable and safe with her!

Lucky it was not a big mess as it was 5 am!!!!And she had little wipes in her bathroom and me and hubs were in a seperate room.....I will tell her that! It hasn't happened again.
