If anybody has ever had this experience...
I have taken 40 mg of oxycontin for 2 years, 3 times a day. My body became immune to hydrocodine and recently oxycontin is not relieving the pain.
My pain management doctor perscribed me 25 mg of Fentanyl patches but I have spent the first 24 hours on this new medication in EXTREME, UNBAREABLE pain.
Will these patches eventually relieve my pain? Or should I go to the emergency room?
I can not tolerate the pain any longer.

I have been with FM for 6 years and I am a 52 yr old female. Thank you so much for your time and advice.

If you have just stopped the Oxycontin, I am kind of worried about you. You cannot stop it cold after all that time without help. In 3-4 days you may go into a severe withdrawal reaction.

I was on MS Contin for 9 months a few years ago. I transitioned to Subutex and not only had no pain, but no withdrawal reactions. I cannot promise you will react the same -

Subutex is normally used to prevent withdrawal effects when stopping any opiates. It also treats pain. A doctor must be specially licensed to prescribe it. They are trained how to transition you, etc. My pain doctor has 16 fibro patients on Subutex doing well - no pain, etc.

Subutex fills the "mu" pain receptors in your brain but not like normal opiates. It is considered a mild opiate but the difference is you never have tolerance. I have been on the same 16 mg day for over 3 years and have no pain at all. Sometimes I drop down to 8 mg and still no pain.

Once you have been on Subutex for a while, it is very easy to discontinue. It is like a step down from the opiates, however, you can easily stay on a maintenance dose if it stops your pain.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I will warn you, many doctors have no knowledge on Subutex and only know it is used for addicts to get off opiates, etc.

Rather than refer you to someone who can prescribe it, they would rather allow you to suffer the terrible withdrawal. Right now your body is screaming for pain relief . Those receptors in your brain are no longer getting the Oxycontin.

Fenatnyl is not the same drug and will not stop this. I don't know where you are located but you are welcome to call my doctor and get information on the Subutex protocol.

He sees patients from all over the US - he frequently speaks at worldwide pain conferences with other doctors, trying to educate them on pain management. I truly believe we are in the dark ages with pain treatment.

My doctor is Dr. Rick Chavez. He is located in Redondo Beach, CA - phone 310- 798-1633. You can ask for his wife, Lynette. Tell her "Carol" a patient of Dr. Chavez referred you.

If you have been on that dosage of Oxycontin you may get very sick with 3 days. If you happen to get sick please go to the emergency room. My mom had a severe reaction when a doctor tapered her too fast from her pain meds.

On the third day she was incoherent, vomiting, etc. She was age 76 at the time and it still breaks my heart to recall her suffering. I took her to the ER and she was in the hospital for over a month.

Please let us know how you are doing. It sounds like it was dangerous to allow you to stop the Oxycontin cold after that time. Please don't be afraid to call and consult with other doctors.

People like to make us feel like it is our fault when we get in trouble with pain medications. Dr. Chavez is the most compassionate doctor I have ever met. Also, he does believe in prescribing opiates, etc. - I was the one who wanted to stop MS Contin due to side effects. I was shocked to find it controlled the pain.

Lastly, with Subutex, you can take pain meds if needed eg. if you have a surgery, etc. There is another drug called Suboxone. If you do check into this, ask for Subutex, not Suboxone. With Subutex, if you have medical ER you can still take pain meds, etc. I had gallbladder surgery last year and did great.

Here is a list of doctors in Dallas that prescribe Subutex and are pain specialists. Any of these can get you on Subutex and treat your pain at the same time.
