Hi, i'm new hear and i'm desperate for some help and guidance. I've been really depressed this last year. Being a 21 year old male i feel really alone with this cuz people think I can just make my pain go away or something. Everyone sees this young guy and assumes i'm completely healthy. Also, I don't know what my pain is cuz my symptoms don't really fit anything I've read or heard about all that well, but I figured fibro might be the closest.

    Here's my pain history:
-About 2 years ago I started getting on and off back pain. I think I might have hurt it weight lifting. With stretching and a chiro its improved tremendously, but I can't wear anything but sneakers for more than an hour or it starts killing me
-About a year ago I started getting really bad heartburn that would come like a couple times a week. Now I get heartburn every single day if I don't take Ranitidine(zantac) or prevacid regularly. You can set your clock to when i get heartburn. Sometimes I feel kind of bloated up as well like i have some backed up waste in me that won't come out.

-About 7 months I started getting arm pain in my right arm while using the computer. The very next day my left arm started hurting. I don't really tingle, its more of an achy burning, stiff feeling. The thing that seems to make me very unique and unusual though is that It doesn't bother me at all when I sleep, they actually burn less after a night of sleeping. Sometimes they are slightly stiff for first 5-10 minutes when I wake up but after that, that will be the best it feels all day. Then as the day goes on and i do activities, sometimes they will begin to get stiff and burny again. They have their good and bad days. My wrists are starting to hurt and stiffen while I write this :(

-Also about 7 months ago i started getting really bad neck pain. I would wake up at 5 am and couldn't get back to sleep cuz i couldn't get comfortable. It turns out my pillow sucked. finally one time when I woke up at 5am I drove to a 24 hour wal-mart and picked up a contour pillow out of desperation. It helped TREMENDOUSLY. I recommend you try one if you haven't. Give it a couple days. The first day I tried it i thought it wasn't that comfortable, but I think its because my neck wasn't used to being in the proper position. Now I won't sleep without it. With the pillow and my chiro my neck rarely bothers me at night now.

-Ankle pain started a couple months ago when I would drive. It would get so bad i learned to drive with my left foot so I could switch off when one ankle started hurting too much. I read something about aspartame can be bad so i stopped taking it and my ankle pain went down a lot.
-Also If i cross my legs for more than 30 seconds they start to fall asleep.

Note: The other unusual thing that makes me wonder if I have fibro or not is that I sleep fine at night and feel refreshed in the morning. I love bed time because Its like 8 hours of escaping the pain for me. I'm sorry that some of you don't even get that escape.

Some of you are in more pain than me and yet you sound like you're still not letting it get to you and you're remaining very optimistic. That's very beautiful. I hope to get like that, but its tough for me to get over the fact that i'm so young and i've had all my favorite activities stripped from me, mainly because of my arm pain and stiffness: sports (tennis, baseball, wrestling), weightlifting, and computer games.

    Hi Kingpin,
I'm not sure whether you have fibromyalgia because w/fibro along with the pain comes extreme fatigue and insomnia. In addition, in order to get diagnosed with fibro, a doctor has to identify 11 out of 18 tender points on the patient's body. I am so sorry that you are experiencing so much pain. It must be really frustrating for you right now not knowing what is causing it. If I were you, I would get referrals for different specialists and get tested for different illnesses. Don't give up. Some doctors may imply or out right say that it's all in your head. It can really drive you crazy, but be strong and don't let what some doctors say stop you from pursuing the cause of your pain. Before being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, it took me a long time to find a doctor who would truly listen to me. With his help, I was diagnosed with fibro. So it may take some time before finding a doctor who will listen to what you have to say and is truly dedicated to finding out what the problem is. Take care and let us know what happens.

Hi, welcome to the board. Gee, I am confused with your pain, if it were FM I can't understand your wonderful, restful sleep. Unless its your age. That is a possibility I would imagine.

Keep trying untill you find a doctor that finds what is wrong with you. It may not be FM but something that is curable.

It is possible the stress and frustration of not being able to live your life like you did before this hit you is the reason for your acid reflux. I know if I am upset about anything my digestion is the first thing to suffer from it.

I sure wish you luck and finding out what is the reason for all your pain. Its so wide spread that you are no doubt confusing the medical profession.

Again, welcome to the board, and please let us know how you are doing and if you find out what you have.

    Shalom, Shirl

Just maybe you have hypothyroidism...that would account for the pain. See a specialist, an endocrinologist, not a GP.

your "refreshing sleep" is the kicker. Though I don't normally have the severe sleep problems of others, and I've had CFS for 6 years. I consider that I do suffer from mild insomnia (except this past month) in that it often takes me an hour or more to fall asleep. But once I'm out, I'm out. (Though I *never* feel rested in the morning.) Just saying I don't think your lack of insomnia would rule out FMS.

Regarding your gastro problems, maybe you have food sensitivities. It's possible that taking digestive enzymes and/or hydrochloric acid supplements would help. But if you have sensitivities you should find out and rotate your diet so they don't develop into full-fledged allergies.

Due to shoulder pain, I rarely cross-stitch or play computer games anymore. I think it my case it's mostly the way I sleep. Maybe if you try to change that you can get some of your hobbies back. (I try to sleep with the arm that bothers me either against my side or elevated on a pillow, rather than flung away from my body.)

I am not sure what is wrong with you but you do need to see your Doctor as soon as possible. The symtoms you describe or at least some of them sound like heart problems or circulation problems. I am certainly not a doctor, but if you were my son, you would be at the doctor like last week. Never think you are too young to have these problems, as some people are born with them. Don't take your symptoms lightly, as they sound serious to me. Go to the Dr.and get a diagnoses soon, please. Barbra

I think the problem is I haven't been sticking to just one doctor who can follow everything about me. Since i'm back and forth between being away to college and being home for break i've been seeing different doctors. You guys have convinced me to go in again and show them everything I wrote hear. I'll definately print it out cuz sometimes I do forget about things...

Thanks to all you guys who took the time to read everything I wrote. The support you guys showed is literally bringing me to tears. For so long i've felt like no one was taking me seriously and that no one understands me. Even if I don't have FMS, pain is pain and I think we can all relate.

A little more about myself. I'm a senior at college majoring in Biology. I don't know how i'm going to get through this last year with my achy arms but I've got to find a way because my dream is to work in healthcare or healthcare research. Since i've had my time in pain as well, I know I could be the compassionate, open-minded practioner that we all hope to find.
