Are y'all familiar with these??
Do you play??
Hey! What happened to my post? Great balls of electronic gremlins.
These are majong tiles, similar to cards. The game itself is similar to gin rummy. These
particular tiles are the 4 seasons aka flowers. Gordon used to play every Sunday afternoon
with this mother and two other old Chinese ladies.
He tried to teach me to play but I couldn't learn to identify the suits. The flowers and bamboos and dragons and winds were just too confusiatin'.
My post disappeared too! I was just going to say after Rock identified these that I remember them from 'The Joy Luck Club' book by Amy Tan.
And then kept remembering the clicking of the tiles on a wooden table. Forgot it was a movie too.
I remember the Joy Luck Club. A wonderful movie from Amy Tan......was that her name.
Does Gordon still play it?
Nope, Gordon no playee anymore. Mrs. Wong, who lived across the street, moved to
live with her daughter so they didn't have 4 players anymore. Then there was a long
period where Gordon played on the computer, but he hasn't done that for years.
Not sure why he stopped.
Many Chinese families belong to a Family Association. They have a building, or a
room in a building, in Chinatown which is 2 miles from us. They have meetings and
celebrations and dinners and what not. You should heard a room full of Chinese
playing mahjong. The clacking of the tiles is deafening, and the people shout to be
heard over the noise.
Ethel mentioned mahjong on a Lucy episode, but she pronounced it wrong. I think it
used to be popular in the USA back in the 20s.
Gordon liked "Joy Luck Club" and read some other book by Amy, but he didn't think that
one was as good. I preferred Pearl Buck. Saw her once. Betcha can't guess where.
In the Mormon Tabernacle.
Yep I play Mah Jong every now and then. On DS.
