I think maybe I may now know exactly what is causing all my symptoms: Protruded disc in C3 and 4
Narrowing in my canal (stenosis) I gather it is
my spinal canal... Maybe this is the fluid in
the canal and it can't get through because it's
    narrowed.. Sounds scary!

Anyone else have this? Anyone know what i should do next or if there are any treatments at all? Tx hazygal

I have the same thing but with C2 and C3. The surgeons I saw said it was too risky to operate.

I watched a show a few years back about this. It showed successful and unsuccessful operations. For those of whom the surgery went well, they were pain free after recovery -- the best they ever felt in their life. For the ones that weren't successful, they were twice as bad as before surgery, some badly disabled.

My advice would be to get a second and even third opinion, see what your options are, and then go from there. Also, do ALOT of research before agreeing to any surgery.

Are you having any neurological problems like numbness or tingling as a cause of the narrowed canal? I think that's one of their determining factors. For me, the specialists said the discs are "grazing" the spinal cord but not "putting clear pressure" on it. I do have weird neurological symptoms (myoclonus) and am concered of permanent nerve damage. I never know what causes what -- is it from the cervical problems, Fibro, or something else??

    Did you have an accident?

    Good Luck!!

I have the same condition in my lower back.I've gone thru PT alot(seems like yearly every since, each time for 6 weeks or more)I was DX with the 2 herniated disks and spinal stenosis which I think was causing the footdrop, sciatica????? surgery was mentioned as a last resort....if all else failed to relieve my pain. But PT did help me alot~ Basically while going because i'd get heat, massage, and mild exersizes to do there and at home.Within a month of ending each time, the pain would be back, tho not as severe. For me the condition was DX about 8 yrs ago. I would say in my case it acts up about twice a yr.Sometimes just for 2 weeks, sometimes for 2 months! But during my rounds of PT,I met so many bad back &neck sufferers and some had done the surgery....and were not better~One man warned me not to have the surgery!!He said it was the biggest mistake he made!!(sorta scary huh!?) So I deal with it each time, with pain killers and muscles relaxers and get back doing my home exersizes~Sometimes back to PT~
Best of luck~ BTW....does having this in your neck cause dizziness??with certain movements of the neck?? I ask because i've been having problems with my neck recently too.The Drs. have'nt done any x-rays or MRI of that area yet.But I get neckaches, bad headaches and dizzy alot when its acting up???sometimes even stiffness, and a feeling of"my head is too heavy for my neck to hold".
I wondered if its the fibro,or a bad disk there now too!!! hmmmmmmmmmmm....... Take care:)

So strange you describe the sensation in your neck as "too heavy for your neck to hold"... I say that same thing all the time!! For me, it builds up... I feel pain and tightening in the neck and then I just feel like my head needs to be supported by a pillow or something... just can't "carry" it anymore.

I only get the dizziness if I get up too quickly. You may want to have that checked out.

Thankyou for writing me back, very interesting... I just know I can't go on like this the rest of my life. I really didn't have too much pain or anything, but now i'm getting these headaches that really don't go away, I feel pressure like the spinal fluid is pressurized and hard to shoot up into my head.. It feels like my head is resting on my shoulders and I sometimes feel like I wish someone could pop it, like someone pops or cracks their knuckles? I know it sounds ridiculous. 1) Do you have to have pain to have surgery? 2) What happened to that man after surgery? What symptoms did he have? 3) did you have severe fatigue, muscle weakness?

In answer to your questions, No I never had an accident, but Doc. told me you can injure your neck just by picking up something like a piece of paper off the ground. (that was years ago, and I had done something like that and my neck hurt too and had to wear neck brace for a week or so as I recall back in 1989. I don't know what to do, I feel it is hopeless now... Can you guys answer my three questions? And thanks so much in advance... Hazygal

There is a great deal information that will answer alot of your questions on the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal & Skin Diseases site. Do a search for "spinal stenosis". The first result that comes up should be "Questions and Answers about Spinal Stenosis".

I'm surprised they haven't suggested any kind of therapy... starting with PT. You may want to call your docs and ask them what treatment options you have and go from there.

    Good luck!

Cranial-Sacral therapy really helps!! It's a special type of massage. Your neck feels like a giraffe when you're done (LOL) but it feels so good and temporarily eliminates that "compressed" feeling!

at c5/6 - 6/7 and I wear my soft collar to bed. I'm debating having surgery because I have a fusion at 6/7 that they would have to break (yikes!). Then they would put in a plate and screws. Don't know if I'm up to surgery.

Anyway, the soft collar at night does make a huge difference. Sheried

For anyone going thru these painful headaches! Sometimes my neck/headaches will last 4 days!! no easing!!
4 full stinking days of headache!! and my neck will be stiff, sometimes crack when I turn it to the side, the muscles that run up the sides of your neck will be pulled taunt/tight!!The Dr. is calling my headaches muscle contraction headaches~but sometimes they turn into migranes. The only thing that helps is alternating heat or ice on my neck in the back. Also....when I went to PT one of the times,(I had explained all the problems in my neck to my therapist)She wanted to try neck traction...a gentle stretching of the neck~ It acually felt good for me ,but the therapist would have to see if your a person for it....its not for everyone!!for a couple hrs after each of those sessions I felt like a giraffe!!!lol
Darn!! I forgot the other question!!yeah thats me....bright one! I try to check in tomorrow with ya~K girl? Sweet dreams :)
