And it went well. First I went to the dentist, then they recommended/referred me to the TMJ/facial pain doc. He believes the TMJ, facial pain is caused by the whiplash injury from the car accident in April. And so it will be covered for treatments through him. He also is going to do more thorough tests, xrays, anaylize it all, and give me a better diagnosis in two weeks. He prescibed me Ultram, and Skelaxin.

Thanks to all who helped here, with the support and encouragement.

I tried for awhile to get my family doctor to change my pain meds from Tylenol 4's to Ultram. Something else that it takes another doc/specialist to listen to me.

I just had another TMJ appointment this morning. So this is a coincidence.. LOL.

After a car accident, I had increased migraine headaches, earaches, jaw pain. I went to my dentist about it first. Then he referred me to a TMJ specialist.

After this appointment things changed some. He says that by the wearing on my teeth, that I am a night time teeth grinder, yet the accident couldve worsened it. My husband says too I grind my teeth. So not sure yet really which way to go. I cannot afford the mouth piece he is suggesting to use. Whether the car accidnt insurance will pay, or my husbands insurance will pay for it. He says the appliance costs 700.00.

The ultram and skelaxin are helping a little, Its not a constant pain in my jaw, ear, head. But then its not really all gone away yet. Its not all day, but throughout the day and night, with periods of relief.

I hope you too can get the appliance, because I think it would be a big help. I hope to also be able to get it.

I got a suggestion on a mouth piece that will help with keeping from grinding the teeth at night, and its so much less expensive, and I have been told it actually works too.

Its a protective mouth piece, like football players wear. Can buy them in a sporting goods store, under 20.00. I dont know much about them, but was told that you can sort of mold them. Like put them into hot water, softens the piece, and then put it into your mouth and mold it, then put the piece in cold water to be able to harden the piece again. Can do this over and over until the fit is right.

I am going to try it, and let you all know what happens.

Maybe I should get me a football helmet to match..LOL>

Thanks for the info. I went to my dentist yesterday, and I was expecting him to say "oh i can just make you one and save you $2000!" But he said that he didn't feel comfortable treating me because he couldn't promise that I would get better, as there might be other things going on. He basically said go to the specialist. It's super expensive ($2400 when all is said and done), but they will try for a year to get a good fitting splint and fix your situation.

THEN, I called my insurance (Regence) to see if the TMJ specialist would be covered (my policy says I have $1000 of TMJ coverage every calendar year, $5000 lifetime max). She said that doc was not participating, so the benefit would be $0.

SO, I asked if they could direct me to a TMJ doc/dentist that IS participating, and they told me THERE AREN't ANY! What a scam! I have already escalated this to my HR manager.

Sunshyne, I would really like to know if you try the football mouth guard and how it turns out!

    Thanks again,
