Has anyone heard that tanning beds help FMS?

    Just wondering if anyone has heard that tanning beds help with some symptoms of FMS. I know all the cons (skin cancer, faster aging, etc.) but I wonder if there is anything pro for helping FMS.

    I always felt better in the sun until a few years ago when the Lupus invited itself.

    My Rheumy said that (if I remember correctly) that the viatimin K is absorbed from sun light and that people with FM often are lacking in it. Also many have depression and the sunlight helps that too.

    Yes...direct sunlight is not good for you and tanning beds are tough too on the skin. But vitamin K is absorbed ONLY with sunlight (UAV/UVB including tanning beds) not blocked from sunscreen. He recommended 10-15 minutes of direct sun light per day.

    I don't want to give you advise here, this is just my personal experience. I have Lupus now, so I have to avoid the sunlight...so even my experience has changed. But I know that many doctors recommend light boxes for FM patients. It might be better for you than the tanning beds...ask you doc....see what they recommend.

    This is just my opinion!

    I live in Florida now, and when I do go by the pool and sit in the sun, the heat feels good on my body because I feel it's penetrating into my skin and easing my pain of Fibro throught my body.

    In Massachusettes, where I am origanally from, I would go to the tanning salon because also, the heat felt so good and just penetrated through the pain of Fibro and Arthritis, throughout my body.

    On the other hand, I have not been to the pool in months, shame on me. I don't leave the house much due to all my illnesses and the sun, heat and humidity is so peukey!!

    Once I'm in the warm pool water it's wonderful but I have no energy to get down there. I really need to start because it does do wonders, for the time being.

    I have not "heard" anything, but from personal experience, if I am feeling rather sore , a tanning session always brings me some relief. I try to go at least once every 2 weeks or so.

    Unfortunately for all those who insist on turning to leather, yes. It's the vitamin D that helps as well as the penetrating warmth and in the colder states we need both. I haven't gone in so long I don't know if they have sunscreen for use in the beds yet or still just "tan enhancers".

    Keep it to a short visit once a week and I think it would probably be fine. Or have your vitamin D level checked then, if needed take a supplement.

    I have found that it helps me because of the increase in vitamin D. My specialist said that most people in the US have a defiencey in vit. D.

    Laying in a tanning bed helps me sooooo much. I go a few times a week, plus I feel better with a little color instead of looking like a piece of chalk ! A friend of mine has a salon and she lets me do it for free so that helps alot with the $$$ situation too !

    I am wondering if it's the tanning bed itself or the light that is emitted from it.

    I have started using a light box to combat the anxiety and depression associated with Fibro. I do think that I am sleeping better and my energy is better during the day.

    Just my two cents worth
