I have been loosing my voice everyday for( months and months) quite sometime.
I cough constantly and spit up mucus day and night. Anti-biotics help but as soon as I go off them --it's back to block A. I have tightness in my chest but not bad and I am almost totally deaf in both ears. They get a little better when I'm on anti-biotics but can't stay on them forever. Constant infection all the time! HELP

    Hi Shirley!

Investigating a possible reaction to mold is a good idea but I think it is also wise to go see an Ear-Nose-Throat specialist for an exam, as well.

This is what happened to me over 20 years ago:

In 1984, after having an unusually long bout of laryngitis, I went to see an MD who told me I just had allergies (wrong!). He kept prescribing antibiotics and decongestants but they didn't help me very much.

Finally, I went to an Ear-Nose-Throat specialist who diagnosed a paralyzed vocal cord (he called it "Bell's Palsy of the vocal cord") due to a virus attacking a specific nerve during a bout of pneumonia. He said the use of both vocal cords "might or might not" come back within a year. Unfortunately, the situation turned out to be permanent.

Despite this, FMS, and a bunch of other ailments, I can talk (though a little hoarsely) pretty well for limited amounts of time but can't shout, sing, give speeches, yodel, etc.

I just want to encourage you (and anyone else who experiences long-term hoarseness) to get it checked out with a specialist. Though new surgical procedures can't help my particular situation, there may be people with similar problems who may benefit from them.

Check out the post titled: Silent Acid Reflux by poster
afisher39. Acid reflux can cause some of the symptoms
you have. It can cause chronic sinusitis. Or you could
have a viral or bacterial infection.(allergies?)

In 1996 I worked with a guy who wore cologne that I was very allergic too. We were friends (i thought) and I use to tell him that when he wore Obsession it did not bother me, but whatever he switched to would literally take my breath away.

Well, he started to wear more of it. I ended up with a chronic sinus infection and was on antibiotics for about 6 weeks. Eventually I got laryngitis and had it for 3 weeks. I ended up out of work and had surgery on my nose. I had a slight deviated septum that they fixed and then because the tissue in my nose was so inflamed and would not go down - they lasered it out. So that laryngitis was allergy related.

Three years after that I again had chronic laryngitis. I went back to the same ENT and he numbed my throat and put a camera down my nose into my throat (laryngoscope - it sounds uncomfortable but it really wasn't). He saw spots on my vocal chords. I was a smoker, so he scheduled me for a biopsy three weeks later and told me to quit smoking. I went home that Friday night and smoked about 6 packs of cigerettes over the weekend and then quit cold turkey on Monday morning. By the time I had the biopsy, alot of the spots diminished. They were pre-cancerous cells.

So, you see there could be MANY reason for your hoarsness, but an Ear Nose and Throat doc. could tell you exactly what's going on.

Thank you all for responding to my message! I forgot to tell you that I had a breathing test on Thurs. at the hospital and will see my Dr on Weds. this week. This has went on so long and I keep going back to the Dr and she don't know what to do. I think I do need a specialist to check out my nose and throat. I wonder if it is Allergy induced Asthma? Or like you said Gerd. I sure hope that they can do something before my hearing is completely gone. I can't use the phone or even go to my Dr alone b/c I don't know what's going on. My hubby makes all the calls and goes with me almost everywhere.I really feel useless!!
    Thanks Shirley

If it was only your voice, I would definetly say get your Thyroid fully checked.......

And not just a TSH Test for Thyroid......
You would need a FREE T3, FREE T4 and a Thyroid Antibody Test done.......

But you have the mucus, and tightness in the chest, which I personally have never known to be a sign of thyroid problems......

It's always possible, you have a combination of more than one thing too.........

    Wishing you the best.......Donna

Your doctor needs to "culture" your sputum and see what antibiotic you should be taking.

It sounds like you are not taking the right antibiotic to kill whatever you have...

I had a bout so severe that the acid backed up into my ear canal as well as my lungs when I was sleeping. Caused a lot of discomfort and constant earache.

One I started on Losec, it went away, and my throat healed up.

    Just another thought.

I did have a mold problem when my shower was leaking but we took out the floor and replaced it. I also run a machine in there to kill any left over mold. But I had this problem long before that. I guess it could be thyroid but my Dr says that's not defective. She don't show me the test or give me anything to go on but what she thinks.Maybe Silent Gerd that I read about here on the board but I know there is infection b/c of the color of mucus coughed up. I will wait and see what the Dr says and ask to go to a ENT Specialist. She is a nurse Practioner and certainly don't have all the answers.
Thanks to you all for your response,
    Shirley
