I have fibro, Marfn and arthritus. I have tried many drugs for the arthritus but nothing seems to work.
I am in pain every day to the point of laying upside down to stretch the neck and back and cold air to try and stop the headaches from the pain. I was told by the specalist it would be up to me and my GP to come up with a drug program to fit my needs. I do not want to be stoned just less pain. It is worst in the morning and at about 2:00 pm everyday.
I would love any advice as to what drugs may work that I haven't tried.
I appreciate the many notes on this board and when I am in tears from pain I come here and know that I am not alone.
Thanks for letting me know I am not crazy.
I need this sort of venting.

fibro, "marfn" and arthritis, do you mean you have Marfan's Syndrome? I do and was just wondering if that is what you mean.

    Hi deedeej
I am on the duragesic (fentanyl) patch 50 mcg/h with vicodin for break through. Then I take a mucsle relaxer and a nsaid daily. This seems to work for me. Before my doc put me on the patch I tried oxycontin but the dose was so high he thought the patch was a better idea. I do not feel "stoned" just feel some relief. I also have narcolepsy so I take provigal for that so I think that helps me not feel so tiered?

I also have tried so many meds this past 7 months that I am relieved to have found something that helps. My pcp has referred me to a pain clinic and I am praying they dont mess with what is helping.

    Good Luck

    Hi, Deedee!

I so sorry that you are having such a tough time of it now. I also have, in addition to the fibro/cfs, arthritis, lupus, and back trouble which all cause a lot of pain.

I really think you need to discuss the pain with your primary care doc, too. I am not sure what Marfn is that you are talking about. You may need more tests before he decides upon what would work for you best.

You mention that you are laying upside down to stretch the neck and back and cold air to try and stop the headaches. Have you ever had a CT scan or an MRI of your neck/cervical spine? A lot of problems in my neck are what contribute towards my headaches. (Everything wrong with my cervical spine [neck] is in my bio.)

I don't know what type of specialist you are referring to either. If it were a Rheumatologist, shame on him. Since you have arthritis and fibro, he is just as qualified as your GP to prescribe something appropriate for pain relief--unless he just wanted your GP to do all the prescribing so he would know what all you were taking. Just an excuse, though! Or, at least, he could have written a note to your GP detailing the extent of your arthritis and fibro and suggesting appropriate medications.

If you don't want to be "stoned" all the time, then I suggest you talk with your GP regarding some of the milder meds like Ultram (Tramadol is the generic), Darvocet, etc. Then possibly add a good antidepressant like Cymbalta which also helps on the pain, Neurotin, and something like Elavil or Zanaflex to help you sleep.

My fibro meds are Cymbalta, Neurotin, and Zanaflex. For arthritis, I am currently taking Ketoprefen, but it does nothing for me, so when I see my Rheumy next month, I'm telling him that I am quitting it. For the Lupus, I am on Placquenil.

Be honest with your doc on how bad your pain is and what it prevents you from doing. When most doctors know that your pain is preventing you from leading a normal life, they will prescribe you something.

    Good luck.

    Hugs,
    Janet

Most want to start with something mild to see if it helps. Ultracet and ultram are both non narcotic and help many people. I take ultram and if that doesn't control the pain I have Lorcet to take.

do you use heat or ice for the pain?

Have you tried physical therapy? Or a muscle relaxer.

Cymbalta helps a lot of people too. It is used for pain and/or depression. The dosage you get depends on whether it is for pain or depression. It helped me with the pain, taking one 30 mg. pill nightly.
