I`VE BEEN ON ULTRAM FOR 6 MONTHS, ITS NOT WORKING ANYMORE,I TAKE LORTAB 10 BUT ONLY FOR HEADACHES, MY DOCTOR IS STRICT ABOUT NARCOTICS, SO WHEN I FIRST WAS DIAGNOSED WITH FM, HE PUT ME ON ULTRAM,AND IT WORKED FINE,EXCEPT FOR MY HEADACHES,SO HE GIVE ME LORTAB 7.5,HE`S HAD TO UP IT SINCE TO LORTAB 10, BUT I CAN ONLY TAKE THEM FOR HEADACHES,BECAUSE HE GIVES ME JUST ENOUGH. I HEARD OF A NEW DRUG CALLED PREGABALIN,ON THE NEWSLETTER I GET EVERYDAY FROM FIBRO&CHRONIC FATIGUE SYDROME. IS IT BEEN APPROVED? IT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD ONE,IF NOT THROW SOME SUGGESTIONS MY WAY ABOUT WHAT YOU ALL TAKE THATS NOT A NARCOTIC,SOMETHING ALONG THE SAME LINE AS ULTRAM, ONLY BETTER,&STRONGER. MY DOCTOR WOULD NEVER JUST LET ME TAKE LORTAB 10 ALL DAY ,I HAD TO BEG FOR IT FOR MY BAD HEADACHES.WHEN THE ULTRAM WAS WORKING, IT AND THE LORTAB FOR MY HEADACHES I WAS PRETTY MUCH AS OK, AS YOU CAN BE WITH THIS JUNK. BUT I NOTICE WHEN I TAKE THE LORTAB FOR MY HEADACHE IT HELPS MY ACHES AND PAINSALSO . PLEASE BUT I TEND TO BE ON THE ADDICTIVE SIDE,OR WAS ONCE ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO,AFTER A FEW MINOR SURGERIES,AND A LOT OF DENTAL WORK, BUT I CAN CONTROL IT NOW BECAUSE I KNOW THAT I HAVE TO. BUT THAT DOCTOR SAYS IT CAN COME BACK, IF I TAKE TOO MANY A DAY. SO I`D APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT I SHOULD ASK FOR. ASAP,IF YOU CAN!!!!!!!!! NJE

Hey, NJE, I have to admit I've never taken the "heavy" pain drugs because I can't tolerate them and I have to be alert at work. But have you ever tried acupuncture for your headaches and pains? That, some homeopathic and herbal remedies, and lots of myofascial release therapy has helped me tremendously. And none of it is addictive.

    Hope things get better!

when my doc prescribed 2 ultram 3 times a day, i got no relief at all. I experimented on myself and tried taking
THREE ultram 2 times a day. My family practice doc was not pleased & told me to take it as directd. But my Rheum said if it works go ahead and take it that way. I sometimes take a half a muscle relaxer with it also. I am sure we should check with doc before doing this. It has helped me, though never totally relieved.

I take ultracet, neurontin and ambien about an hour before bedtime and that is a good mix for me. I can sleep about 5 hours on that. I don't take any of them in the day time. I need to be all the way awake in the daytime. Except for the last two days, my husband and I have been snowed in on our country road. It has been a nice two days. They are trying to get us out but the drifts are too high. They are going to have the state crews try tomorrow instead of the county road crews. We are loving this beauitful quiet time together. barbarann

    NJE,

From what I've researched, pregabalin is neurontin which is not an addictive or controlled medicine and works for alot of us FM patients- I learned about it from the newsletter of this FM site and got it from my dr. and can't function without it-lots have posted the same! Worth a try!

    take care,

It is certainly helpful to read comments. I wanted to reply about the Ultram. I know I tried it quite awhile ago but it didn't help. I mainly wanted to comment about the hydrcone. You probably need to get another dr. I now go to a pain specialist and it has made a difference. They are more knowledgeable about chronic pain and are able to prescribe stronger and different drugs than the average family dr is. They also understand the difference between medication tolerance and abuse. Taking medication in response to real and chronic pain is not the same as abuse. Abuse is when you are self-medicating to just get high instead of relieve pain. I have a high tolerance and have had to make some drug changes and increases over the last few years in response to my fibro problems, but I am very careful to only take as little as I can and still function. I've notice that sometimes my emotional tolerance for pain is lower than others and that alone will sometimes affect my dosages. Believe me, it makes a big difference when your pain is being managed by someone with special training and experience in that area.

You are going to have to find a new doctor, this doctor you have does not seem to know the difference when you need to take painkiller and when you just want to take painkillers. There is a big difference.

I take Neurontin and Topamax and they contain most (85%) of my pain unless something massive is going on, like a surgery on my ankles (last Tuesday) and then I actually take painkillers. My main stay is lortab 7.5 or Oxycodone when it gets really bad or I am right out of the hospital.

The thing that you need to ask yourself about painkillers is can I stand the pain for the next hour without a pill. If the answer is yes don't take one, if not take one and be honest with yourself.

i happened to save a weekend newspaper article on Pregabalin. the article indicates Pfizer "has already completed pivotal tests as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, nerve pain and epilepsy. Pfizer hopes to file for approval from the FDA for these uses within 12 months. . .The drug could be on the market as early as 2004. Once it's approved, doctors can prescribe it for other conditions, such as fibromyalgia." given the article, it sounds as though it is not the same as neurontin. . .and is something to look forward to trying when it becomes available. if someone has more information that conflicts with this, please post.
