    Zantac, the brand name for ranitidine, is a histamine-2 blocker that is more commonly associated with treating gastro-esophageal reflux disorder (GERD), rather than with allergies. However, Zantac has been found to be effective in treating hives and esophagitis, the inflammation of the esophagus. These are two conditions that can be symptoms of food allergies. Histamine blockers reduce the amount of acid in the stomach and alter the way histamines interact with the allergen.
