How do I keep a symptom diary?

What kind of notebook do I use? I have a small notebook that I record my dreams and type of sleep I got overnight (when I can remember) in.

How should I record all of my symptoms each day, to show how FMS/CFS is affecting my day-to-day living?

Bruce Campbell has a book on his site that has some excellent charts. He's a CFS survivor I think I learned about him from this site.

    I've been wondering this myself.

Sally, I googled "Bruce Campbell" but could only find some Bruce Campbell who is some kind of B-movie actor. How can I find his site?

    This is what I do:

I bought a small notebook. Every day, usually in the early evening at about the same time, I record the following:

My blood pressure, my temperature, my pulse rate.

My pain on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the best, 10 the worst.

My energy level, same scale 1 to 10.

My stiffness, same scale and noting any trouble spots, like burning in my shoulders or arms.

My exercise, if any for the day, what it was and for how long.

How much sleep I got the night before and if it was continuous or interrupted.

Any loss of function or problems I had during the day.

This way over time, you can see patterns that you wouldn't normally see day to day.

For example, I always have a flare of extra fatigue and stiffness when I get my period for that entire week.

If I change medication doses for any of my meds, it will change my menstrual cycle.

Then when you go to see the doctor, you bring it with you.
They like to look at hard data - it shows them that you are serious about working as a team to help manage your condition and they can read for themselves how this disease is affecting your everyday life and health, emotionally and physically.

    Hugs,
    Madame Curie

    Blessedmom2four, thanks for the chart.

My journal is brief notes (maybe half a page to one page per day). I record when I wake, how I slept, any changes in condition, how bad a symptom is using a number rating, whether anything stressful happened, the weather, what I ate and when...

The notebook has helped me to see what affects my symptoms. I also find that keeping a notebook with me is useful for jotting down memos.
