I'm New Need to Know How You Feel about Provigil

I feel so much better on Provigil - for a while at least. Actually I feel better for about a day. Second day isn't quite so good. And third day is usually bad so I have to quit taking it for a few days. Then I can take it and feel really good for a day.

But just having one really good day is very helpful. Even if it is just once a week.

I tried it for three weeks (more as an adjunct for treatment resistant depression) and just didn't really have any luck. My psychiatrist switched me to Concerta about a week ago and I can feel some effect (benefit) from this - only for about 2 hours a day, but that's something. Good luck!

    Hi,

You can find out more about Provigil by putting it in search, at the upper left of the screen.

Personally, I tried Provigil for a while. I could not take it daily. So I tried using it for "special occassions". Ha! You know, times when I knew that I would be spending extra energy - multiple doc appts. or social engagements. I found it just was not for me - the side effects out weighed the benefits.

You might want to try using Provigil, on an as needed basis- or just once a week as you mentioned. Just don't over-do it.

Best of luck with the Provigil & don't forget to check out the search option.

It certainly would be nice to have more energy.

Am trying to really watch my diet and that seems to make a big difference - maybe that is really the way I need to go.

I just use it once in a while. And it sure is fun for a little while. And then I just seem to crash.

    Bummer.

But it doesn't look like that is a drug that has been very useful for very many people. Either too many side effects or it just doesn't work well.

    Sigh.

My doc just put me on Provigil. I've been on it for about a week. I have noticed a difference. I'm acutally awake during the day. I have noticed a constant tension headache since I've been on it. Not sure if it's the Provigil itself or if its interacting with something else I'm taking. I will say though, it's nice to be "firing on all cylinders" again.

    Good luck.

What this drug seems to do is drain every bit of energy from your cells but it doesn't generate new energy. After taking it a few days (during which I was sick at my stomach the entire time), I was more fatigued than ever. Sure I felt more energized the first few days but it took a couple of weeks for me to recover from it.

I think you need to just use this stuff once in a while because it uses up energy - and after a couple of good days you find yourself tired and needing to take it easy for a while.

But I sure feel good while I take it.

I tried it. It got me absolutely wired. I couldn't sleep for 48 hours! I was talking a mile a minute--absolutely hyper. And then I crashed. I kind of felt like I'd taken loads of caffeine. Once it wore off,I was absolutely depleted.

I think people are trying to take too much. I just take about 100 mil at a time - or half of a pill. And then I'm not too speedy. But for me being speedy once in a while is pretty fun.

    PROVIGIL SAVED MY LIFE-LITERALLY!
HAS HELPED WHEN 200 MG. OF ZOLFT DIDN'T, NOW I TAKE BOTH.

I TAKE 200MG. IN EARLY MORNING 7 A.M AND THEN ANOTHER 200MGS AN HOUR LATER. dON'T GO BY MY DOSAGE AS MY BODY REQUIRES VERY HIGH DOSES OF EVERYTHING.

THE TABLETS ARE SCORED SO YOU CAN BREAK THEM. I NEED FAR LESS OXYCOTIN NOW. MY ENERGY IS OVER THE TOP. I HAVE TAKEN TAMAZAPAN FOR 20 YEARS FOR SLEEP EVEN BEFORE I DISCOVERED PROVIGIL.

    YOU MUST TRY DIFFERENT DOSES.

It made me groggy and sleepy. I tried it because my specialist wanted me to when he got his first samples. I have some reservations because it works in the area of the brain responsible for making dopamine. No one knows for sure what long-term use of drugs which affect brain chemistry will produce. If Provigil causes the brain to stop making dopamine, one will develop drug-induced Parkinson's Disease. Dr. Cheney has also voiced his concern about this. I'm seeing docs on TV warning that no one knows what these drugs will do. I do not like to take new drugs because so many have been shown to cause serious problems down the road but I was happy to try it for my doc.

In the studies for FDA approval, most of the people only improved their energy level to that of drinking a couple of cups of coffee. Coffee is cheaper and likely safer although that remains to be seen.

Like everything else, this med works for some and not others. I had ADHD as a child and have mild adult ADD now. That may explain the paradoxical effect in my case.

    Love, Mikie

Seriously, I chopped the pill into little pieces and ended up taking about 25 mg.

These meds affect all of us differently.

That's why we need more (decent) research into what the heck is going on with us, including acknowledging that there are different subgroups within CFS (IMHO).

My doctor gave me some 200 mg samples. I took one and immediately felt better than I had in 11 years....tons of energy and motivation and clarity, no worries about the future, got all kinds of things done. Next day, big crash. After a while, I tried it again at 100 mg. Same "cure"/crash pattern, except not as severe. Then I tried 50 mg. Less "cure," smaller crash. 25 mg. Basically like having a good day followed by a lousy one.

My psychopharmacologist now says I should try literally licking the pill and then gradually working up to a higher dose. I think he is still under the impression that he can use drugs to permanently fix me, as he does with bipolar, schizophrenia, OCD, etc. This seems unlikely. (My CFS doctor says he might be inclined to make up homeopathic doses of the stuff at some point for CFS patients and that maybe licking the pill actually _would_ work. I didn't find that did anything though.)

Interstingly, I slept really well (with tons of dreams) every time I took it.

I keep saying I might take it again if the need arose, but in truth I can generally summon enough energy of my own accord when it's really necessary and then create my own crash. I think it's better that way, since I am bringing up just the amount of energy than I need rather than having a huge tidal wave of it as when taking the pill.

No harm taking it if you're willing to put in the rest afterwards to compensate, though. It was sort of nice to remember that first day I tried it what it was like to be truly well.....makes me really and truly realize that I'm _not_ malingering now. Maybe someday there will be a real cure and I'll get there again for a longer period of time, who knows......

I seem to get the same result from provigal as I get from adderall. They both give me a bit of energy but the provial is a lot more expensive.

I know it has benefited some people, but for me it just did not increase my energy like the doctors hoped. :eek:/ so.. try it, but if its not working for you, move on to something else that might.

HI, I started taking Provigil about a year ago and what a difference. I can make it through the day without a nap. Well most days, except when I am having one of my major flare ups. It has been a life saver for me.

I have taken Provigal for over a year.It gives me a boost of energy that I need in order to function each day.
Started out 100mg and weeks later 200mg.I actually think now that I need a higher dose.
Different meds work for some folks and not others.Give a new medication a chance to work...sometimes it can take several weeks.
Of course if a med gives you any allergic or severe reaction you should stop them right away. Jane
