I was watching a program called X-Weighted on a Canadian station called the Life Network(lifenetwork.ca). The excercise trainer tells a women he is working with to lose weight that there is no such thing as fibromyalgia, it's all in the head!
I was so angry that I fired off the following e-mail:

"I was very angry at the comment the trainer made about the disease Fibromyalgia. This is just the sort of ignorant garbage that we deal with all the time. Is he a specialist in autoimmune diseases? What are his credentials? I suggest he visit one of many websites such as FibromyalgiaSupport.com or fmaware.org and educate himself on the subject.

For telling them off! NOW, maybe they'll go back and have that ignorant nutcase apologize to us!

Better yet, hope he has fm/cfs for just a day, and see how he feels and what he has to say! ALL IN THE HEAD??? I think NOT!!!!!

I wish he could live for a week with FM. We would then see if he "believed" in it.

Hi Karen,It's the next day and I'm still fuming! The trainers name is Paul Plakas.
Thanks to everyone who responded. You're a wonderful supportive group and I will message more often.

Good for you but this site -- ImmuneSupport.com -- is also a great site for information :)

Check out the library sometime -- just a suggestion.

I am glad you emailed him and corrected his mistake.

    Take care,

    Karen :)

I am going to email the network, and I think everyone should inform them how stupid this guy is and we should get an apology!! I have had FM for years, but only in the past year have admitted to anyone, just because of this kind of ignorance.

I think it's bad that I'm having so much fun responding harshly to idiots. This could get to be habit! First it was Josh, the person who thinks we're all lazy, and now it's Paul who thinks we're probably just a bunch of fatties. Here's what I emailed:

I'll give Paul the benefit of the doubt and assume he was kidding and maybe this was just a bad, mean joke. But if he really believes this then he is an idiot and it is very dangerous for an idiot to be giving fitness advice on the air to anyone watching. Do know what happens to someone with chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia who exercises and overexerts themself? If they don't have a heart attack and experience the bliss of unconsciousness, they will experience the most agonizing torture imaginable that could last 2 months or more. Either can the insensitive comments or google it and learn about it. karen barrow

My God, we could spend all day finding idiots to respond to if we don't watch it! Even in his picture, Paul looks like a smartass. He is supposed to offer advice on nutrition but I'll bet he's got that all wrong, too.

    Allright!! Who's next!!

I to am enjoying "educating" these fools. If we all stick together, sending protests to the spewing of ignorance, we might actually get some acknowledgement!

I am also going to send an email, get an address, and mail the brouchures that this site gives out. and anything else.

This progam X-Weighted is going to wish they never had you watch this show.

I hope more people will read your post to join in.

    Thanks for your post.

I've watched that episode twice and Paul made me so angry, too. I don't think he'd be receptive to your comments, though. For one thing, the woman with fibro (Jeannette?) did, indeed, improve from the exercise as many people with fibro do. That is not the case for CFIDS, I know. Since his client improved I'm sure he is confident that he just proved his case.

Most of us are too tired and in too much pain to even consider applying for a spot on that show. The severity of fibro symptoms varies so much. That is why we are often compared to someone who has a milder case. (ie. "She has fibro, too, but she doesn't let it stop her from doing things." UGH!!!)

I have just seen this program and immediately e-mailed the network. This kind of stuff makes me angry too and it has to stop!

Below is the actual e-mail that I sent to the network:

    "To the Producers of X-Weighted:

I was stunned and appalled to hear that one of your fitness trainers, Paul Plakas, believes (and so stated on a recent episode) that Fibromyalgia does not exist, telling a woman that it is all in her head.

I work in the medical profession and I have suffered from this illness for almost a decade. It has been one of the toughest things that I have ever had to deal with; to hear someone who claims to be an expert on the human body state that it is nonexistant is INFURIATING and absolutely insensitive!

Does Mr. Plakas have a degree in medicine? Does he know ANYONE who actually has this completely debilitating disease? Please allow him to spend ONE day with a fibromyalgia patient--I guarantee that his attitude and belief system will change.

This is 2006, almost 2007, and to employ someone who is obviously so ignorant and UNEDUCATED about the human body and its physiology is frightening. What kind of people does your network employ? I can tell you that you have lost a lot of viewers and will continue to as word gets around this episode."

    What an ass.
