This just came through in my e-mail from FDA.

So many of you are colonoscopy patients or IBD or Chron's -

FDA issued this MedWatch Alert warning today on Oral Sodium Phosphate Products for Bowel Cleansing

"Oral Sodium Phosphate (OSP) Products for Bowel Cleansing
Audience: Consumers, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals
[Posted 05/05/2006] FDA notified healthcare professionals and consumers of reports of acute phosphate nephropathy, a type of acute renal failure, that is a rare, but serious adverse event associated with the use of oral sodium phosphates (OSP) for bowel cleansing.

Documented cases of acute phosphate nephropathy include 21 patients who used an OSP solution (such as Fleet Phospho-soda or Fleet ACCU-PREP) and one patient who used OSP tablets (Visicol).

Individuals at increased risk of acute phosphate nephropathy include: those of advanced age, those with kidney disease or decreased intravascular volume, and those using medicines that affect renal perfusion or function [diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), and possibly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)].

Recommendations were offered for providers and patients when choosing and using a bowel cleanser.

for a follow up "c" at the end of month.

They give me GoLytely or as I call it "the jug of fun". It is well over a gallon and one must drink ALL of it.

I gag now to even think of it.

But I digress, thank you for the info.

My husband has Crohn's and my father had a bout of bowel cancer. The phosphosoda prep's were equally hated by both.

My husbands specialist recommended a preparation product called Pico Salax. It does the same clearing out but without the violence that some of these preps do.

My Dad used it and his specialist said it did an excellent job of cleaning him out. He also said that many Dr's are hesitent about trying new preps.

Another friend of ours who used to have to do the go-lightly prep has now been changed to this one. You can imagine how happy she is!!!

I used it for my colonoscopy and I'll never go back to the soda again!
