    My cousin called me tonight, and her son is taking Yohimba Root, has anyone had any personal experience with this herb?

    I read what I have, but it sounds very dangerous. Would appreciate any information you have.

    Thanks

    What is it that he is taking it for? Where is the Y. Root imported from? Personally never heard of it and checked through my reference books and found nada. Hope someone has some good info for you. love, Rebel

    He is taking it for energy, but from what I am reading it is seems to be mainly for;

    Impotency/erectile dysfunction
    Treatment for painful menstrual cramps
    May treat chest pain due to coronary artery disease (angina)
    May treat arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)

    Side effects;
    Blocks responses of part of autonomic nervous stystem
    Increases blood-pressure
    Inhibits monoamine oxidase and may cause alarming blood pressure rise, even strokes, when taken with cheese, red wine or other foods or suppements containing tyramines
    Arouses or enhances sexual desire!

    Sounds very dangerous to me, especially for this kid, he is 24 years old.

    He claims it gives him energy.

    I sure would not like to see any of those side effects be inflicted on a 24 yr. old. There is simply too many other options that are much safer for energy. You didn't say he has an illness so I will assume he is in good health?

    Personally, I think he suffers from 'spare the rod and spoil the child' syndome!

    No, he is not sick, just a spoiled brat.

    Hi Shirl, I do not know anything about the root you are questioning. I just wanted to say Thanks for replying to me! I looked in the Dr. refferals and there was'nt any in my area. I will try to call the number you gave me tommorro. Thanks again, Chris

    If you put "yohimbe" in your search engine, rather than "yohimba", you will probably see a lot more sites. It really doesn't sound like something a young person with no good reason should take, does it?

    I'm a pharmacist and I know that there haven't been any studies that prove that yohimbe actually helps with erectile dysfunction. I haven't heard about it being used for energy. I would think that a healthy 24 year old should not be taking it. It is available by prescription which I think is odd since there are no definitive studies. I haven't dispensed much of it for quite a while especially after Viagra came along. There are other supplements that help with energy and I would recommend that he try something else instead of this because of the dangers involved. Linda

    Linda, his Mom thought that if it was something good for energy that perhaps people with FM/CFS could benefit from it.

    I realize from what you have said that it is probably just a new 'thing' with the youth.

    According to the book I do have (Vitamins, Herbs, Minerals & Supplements' by H. Winter Griffith, MD (Revised Edition)), it is illegal to sell in the USA without a prescription, but there is some form of it on the market sold by Twinlab, which I found surprising as they are a reputable supplement company.

    I will let her know what you have said, then the ball is in her and his court!

    Thanks again everyone................
