I've posted before of my problems with Unum. They are going to stop my payments after 24 months because they consider CFS/FM self-reporting. The reason they have paid me to began with is because of cognitive issues. Now they want to say that falls under their 24 month mental illness clause.

Due to my cogitive problems and lack of knowledge of using the board correctly, I lost my post and did not respond to some people that gave me good info. I'm sorry but I've just found some of those old post. I also found where others are having similar problems.

I was hoping that any one that has had problems & that they have been resolved or anyone else doing battle with the LTD insurance companies would reply to this post. My hopes are to gather information to help all of us to get the funds that we paid for & deserve. After reading someone's response to one of my previous "lost" post,I have hired an ERISA attorney but just wanted to see if we all put our exeperiences together, we could help each other or at least have empathy for the other.

I know that I should go to the doctor for every ailment to document the problems but I am so ill that it drains me so much to go that I've had to cancel several appointments and the ones that I have been to are always the same...Your test are fine. I was sure the muscle conduction & nerve condution test would show problems but they didn't. I still don't having feeling in my hands and am awaken at night because of total numbness and am still dropping so many things and don't know it sometimes. I guess there will be another test.

    Hi sweetie,

You may want to reword your title as I remember awhile back several CFS folks having troubles with Unum. Get a good ERISA lawyer and take hold of the situation.

    Best wishes.......foxglove

Deb: Long term disability is what is suppose to be a benefit from my employer although I paid all the premiums for the insurance. I was suppose to get 60% of my salary until I am 67 years of age if I was not able to work. For the first 5 years I would be paid if I could not do my job(I was a bank manager) and the following years any job. If I collected Social Security money that amount would be reduced from the amount that they would pay me.

The deal is that they say that because my MRI's are OK and they do not recognize CFS/FM that it must be mental. I have had the neurophysic test and it shows cognitive impairment and that the frontal executive function is not working correctly but it can not show why this is happening. What is going to cause me problems is that when I first became sick, I went to a neurologist because the cognitive issues & migraines were my main problems along with shortness of breath and orthostatic hypotension. The type of doctor that you see first carries a lot of weight evidently. I did not know what CFS/FM was at the beginning. I was just going from doctor to doctor with different symptoms.

To show how really sick I am, I was blessed by being approved for Social Security on my first attempt. I do not see how different 2 enities could look at the same person.

<P> hi 1sweetie, <p> i am also having alot of problems with this company. I was terminated after 4-5 months, won the appeal and got back on til my 24month mark, now terminated but under appeal again, plus i have gotten a lawyer, we just can't do battle with these scum by ourselves!<P>
(i'm trying to put paragraphs in like i just read, hope this works!!)
I am also doing battle with my mortgage disability company, same thing in same time frame. I noticed a response on this post telling you to say "I CAN'T do this or that"--be careful in your wording, and say that "I rarely" or "it is very difficult for me to..." instead of i can't or i never, they will send surveillance out and if caught just once doing what you said you can't, even if you had to get in your car and drive 1-2 city blocks, they will hold it against you.
<P> also, be very wary of a "field visit", try to meet in a resturaunt or other location than your home (but they will follow you home) or that can be turned against you also. I am dealing with the repercussions of 2 surveillance episodes and a field visit, and after getting ALL of my records from them, I can tell you just how this is used to "stick the dagger in a little farther!!"
<P> Their are quite a few of us on here having dealings with this company, sometime when i notice you are on we can try to "chat" and get together on this. I want them to pay, not only what i am entitled to, but for the hell they have put me and my family through for the past 2 years. I have been "dropped" by my pain management doc. of 3 years after all of the harrassment he has gone through with this company, and am really in a jam now, having had some amount of pain relief on a steady basis, now i have to find someone new, and this is IMPOSSIBLE to not come off as a drug seeker! (although i guess i am, but you know what i mean--i only want to get some function, and have never abused my pain meds!)
<P> Anyway, I would love to touch base with you, not sure if the class action suit against this group of pond scum is ongoing, but i sure hope we can get our cases reviewed. The problem is that there is no concrete facts here, and so they can interpret our illness to meet their needs, this is so wrong and i am so fed up with it all! Good luck, and I'll "talk to ya" sometime--L

Would like to talk with you.I have only been in the chat room one time. I am so slow and didn't know what I was doing but you could help me. I'm very tired now and am going to try to sleep.

I've already got some good info from all of you.

    What is a field visit???

    Isweetie,

    UNUM is the worst.

I hadn't heard from them for several years, and they just sent me this cryptic letter telling me that they could have me seen by a physician.

You need to have a SPECT OR SPEC GRAM. THE FOG HAS ME.

I had this and it DEMONSTRATED THAT I HAD DECREASED BLOOD FLOW AND METABOLISM IN THE PART OF MY BRAIN WHICH CONVERTS SHORT TERM MEMORY TO LONG TERM. IT IS HIGH TECH, VERY SENSITIVE, AND IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE OF COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT.

I sent UNUM a nasty little letter back, told them I would go see ANY QUALIFIED, REPUTABLE DOCTOR OF THEIR CHOICE. THAT DID NOT INCLUDE ANYONE WHO DID NOT SPEAK ENLGISH, HAD MULTIPLE MALPRACTICE CASES AGAINST THEM, WHO WOULD SAY OR DO ANYTHING IF PAID TO DO IT, WHO HAD A TEMPORARY US LICENSE BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT PASS THE BOARDS, OR HAS MOVED FROM STATE TO STATE TO STAY AHEAD OF THE MEDICAL BOARDS WHO WERE AFTER THEM FOR VARIOUS REASONS, OR CONVICTED SEX OFFENDERS.

Laugh, my mother had a Rheumatologist and she didn't know anything about his reputation until it came out in the paper that he had been CAUGHT HAVING DOWNLOADED CHILD PORNOGRAPHY ON ONE OF THE COMPUTERS AT THE HOSPITAL. The Medical Board smacked his hand and said he could no longer treat patients under 17 years of age. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN JAIL, AND HIS LICENSE SHOULD HAVE BEEN REVOKED, PERMANENTLY.

I then told them that since I had non-restorative sleep, verified by multiple sleep tests, nad had NO SPINE LEFT, ESSENTIALLY, and I don't. I need a fusion from C-2 all the way to the coccyx, essentially, but one must have some good vertebrae to fuse to and I don't have any, the fibromyalgia, mitral valve prolapse, arrhthymias from that, and numerous other problems which make it impossible to function without an electric wheelchair most of the time. HAVE AT IT.

However, have the sleep lab and the SPEC test and prove that you have disordered sleep and the brain flow problems - VIRTUALLY ALL FM AND CFS HAVE BOTH, and they will have to leave you alone.

hi 1sweetie--sorry i have been off computer for a few days. when i notice you are on, will send ya my email or phone #. Good info from txxmom, by the way--thanks!<P> A "field visit" is when they send a representative to meet you in person, and talk to you about your condition, rehab potential, etc. His REAL purpose, though, (i found this out from his notes) is to evaluate your home area for future surveillance potential, and to try to discredit anything you have said, thats why if you tell someone "I can never vacum my house" and it LOOKS freshly vacuumed to him, it will be used to make you into a liar.<P> This person (a man in my case) is not a medical person, at least he denied that to me, but will report on your:
walking, talking, home situation, cleanliness and hygiene, clothing, apparent financial status, eye contact, whether you got up and down to offer a beverage, etc., how you moved, how you sat, who lives with you, etc. My guy even mentioned the fact that i was barefoot! Also, his idea of how much pain he felt you appeared to be in, and a good description of you for the surveilance spies to come. The "spies" showed up in a couple weeks and he had alerted them that they would need to do "drive bys" as there wasn't alot of area to see my house from.<P> I considered myself pretty "savvy" to their wicked ways, but didn't even realize that i was being set up for surveillance, although i did holler at my husband for wanting to tidy up the house before "company" came over!<P> Good luck, and ask me anything, i just received a 15" thick stack of papers from them, along with all surv. dvd's and reports (at my insistence, certainly wasn't offered!) Take care--L
