In need of understanding doctor to help my sister with pain medication and depression. This has been an ongoing illness as most of you know, we can not find a doctor to help with the problems she faces. She was dismissed from the care of a pain clinic because it is 50 miles away and she was not able to make the trip so they will no longer see her. There should be some way to hold these people responsible for leaving patients without any means of medical care. She has CFIDS and has been house confined for most of the past ten years. Any help will be greatly appreciated.....Star

Wow, that was so sad that your sis was dismissed. I see this type of thing happening more and more. Or so it seems to me. My very ill sis in law (lupus) was dismissed by her doc.

I am not positive that I can help you. However, I do have relatives in B'ham in the medical field. I will ask them if they know anyone they can recommend. I certainly hope so.

I will say this, that horrible governor you had awhile back was on a warpath against docs who prescribed pain med. My brother decided to not practice any longer because of him. Wasn't worth it to him to "fight city hall", take care of patients and read the newspaper for the people who were arrested for abusing med and "weed" them out of his practice.
So, he retired at age 55. And he is not a wealthy person either. Just couldn't take it.

I will see what I can find out for you...

PS. If you get this, please write my name somewhere when you respond, so that I can do a "search" at the top and find it! Thanks!![This Message was Edited on 08/27/2006]

Unfortunately, I don't know of any doctors who specialize in these diseases. I rely mostly on my rheumy, who, although he does not deal much with FM/CFIDS specifically, is very compassionate about my pain and problems and works with me very well. He prescribes me pretty much whatever I need because he knows I am not going to abuse it. He does not believe in his patients being in unnecessary pain or going without sleep if something can help. His name is Lewis Heck, at the Kirklin Clinic. I have been seeing since I was 8 years old for my juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. I don't know if he takes patients specifically for FM/CFIDS or not.

I have heard of a pain specialist at Baptist Shelby named Cheryl Goins who supposedly has some experience with FM, but I don't know anything about her personally. I have a friend who has had 7 back surgeries who has had success with her in pain management.

It is unbelievable that in this great medical metropolis it is so difficult to find help with these diseases.
