Next week I go in for my mental eval they say it is to see about my depression? I have my medical records stating I have fibro, lupus, ibs and depression. Not quite sure what this is about? Any help, is appreciated if someone has gone through this. Just something else i will worry and stress about! thanks for any input!

Did you have a psychiatrist fill out any forms or just your primary doctor? This could be why they want you to see a specialist. It all depends on what state you are in, what dr's said in their paperwork, etc.

Good luck to you, and don't stress out. If you are taking meds for depression - I'm sure that is more then enough proof.

by a mental health professional. Many people now get medication for depression from their regular doctor instead of a psychiatrist. SSA seems to want people to be diagnosed by mental health professionals.

Did they literally tell you this appt. was about your depression? Are you seeing a psychiatrist?

Re: Cookie's statement that taking meds for depression is enough proof - It was not in my case.

living with this dd. I am not seeing anyone for depression just being treated for it by primary dr. and my rhuem. who lists it in my records!
anyone in chronic pain you would think would be in depression. I called the lady that set up appt. for ssi and asked her what this was about? She told me it was to see about my depression.
Even the nuerologist I go to said i had anxiety and depression. Just new to these procedures the ssdi i would think they would be more interested in the fibro and i also have lupus than being depressed?
Have you or anyone you know have one of these appts.?
    Thanks for your input!

    Hi texasrose204-

I just had my evaluation last week. The psychologist did some neuropsych testing to see how cognitively impaired I was.

It's one of my symptoms. I think they were trying to figure out if it would prevent me from working.

I don't know how they do them in Texas but mine lasted over 2 hours.

The woman was really nice but talked a lot about herself which I found exhausting and draining. She had some incorrect assumptions about cfs and told me I needed to exercise!

I was nervous before my appointment too. I would try not to worry about it. The day will come and pass whether you worry or not (easier said than done I know).

It sounds like you will be evaluated for depression? They might not do the neuropsych testing but just asking questions assessing how depressed you are and how much it affects your level of functioning.

    Good luck-

I was sent for a psychological on Weds. Not too much to it. Asked question to make sure I was aware of time, date, where I was etc. Gave me words to remember from beginning to end. Asked about education, any drug or alcohol abuse, any past treatment such as counseling. No actual formal testing like IQ or personality testing. Found me to be depressed because of my health conditions.

Because depression is on their list of conditions that are already established (or something like that), it is easier to get disability based solely on depression. So it can work to your advantage.

And yes, anyone with these challenges would be depressed. They truly are not questioning the depression - but need the evaluation to see if the depression is enough to prevent you from working, by itself.

He may ask questions about childhood (it tis for diagnosis purposes, not unrelated but seems so). He may ask you questions about everyday things, and have you remember items he names. This is the only test in your life that you WANT TO FLUNK! so don't worry!!

So it's not like i want to try real hard because i really do have bad memory, short term more so. And really hard for me to focus. Guess i just need to tell him like it is -- hating my life and what this has done to me?
I will stress about it that is just me! Just the getting out and going there is stressful to me! thanks again for the help appreciate it!

I also had fibro anxiety and a slew of other things

they did ask me questions I knew the president and other obvious questions and did bad at the memory stuff

We talked alot I cried alot he said I definately was deppressed when we were done he also said possible pstd andd anxiety

when my aunt had it done they did not say anything to her about what she had so don't worrry if they do not tell you she got hers

and they decided to give me disability right after that appointment

So this can be a good thing Let it all out if you are gonna cry cryif you are feeling anxious make sure they know it

I think you have to get it done because it was not a psyc doc who said u have deppression I had to get iot done for that reson I had counceling bit not diagnosed by a psyc doc

    Don't worry about it-Kim
