I remember my Mother taking it in the 50s and 60s. I also remember Cod Liver Oil and castor oil. I never hear about them any more. It' probably because the drug companies want us to buy more expensive, synthetic prescription meds for everything that ails us. Some of the older and maybe the folk remedies were a lot safer and cheaper. And they probably worked as well, if not better, than the stuff the pharmacuetical companies try to stuff down our throats.

Oh gosh, yuk..I have some horrible memories of Milk of Magnesium,Castor Oil and Cod Liver Oil. My mom used to make us take all of these periodically. The taste and consistency made me gag....still does just to think of it.

I couldn't stand the taste of honey until recently because she always gave us a teaspoon of honey to mask the taste of these awful remedies.

But, I'll tell you , my mom was on to something. She used to prepare tea with fresh ginger when we had a tummy ache. She had all kinds of natural remedies that worked.

It's still around . . .in fact magnesium is still often prescribed and taken regularly by people with constipation problems. And it's much better for the gut than the stronger laxatives. It's basically harmless. You can just buy magnesium oxide or other forms and experiment with dosage. Phhillips (the company that makes mild of magnesia) actually sells a laxative that is just magnesium oxide tablets 500 mg. I just bought some.

People also use cod liver oil -- usually in capsules now -- to help with constipation; also not harmful to the gut. Castor oil I don't know about . . .

Yes, they are much healthier options than the newer stuff. I just did a lot of research on laxatives, as it happens

My doctor prescribed magnesium oxide for me to help with bowel motility. In my brain fog I bought magnesium hydroxide which is the active ingredient in Milk of Magnesia. After spending two days in the bathrooom I discovered my mistake.

The Mag Oxide is milder but I still have the other just in case...

I'm not sure what your question is, or maybe you're just commenting, but I like MOM. I have a lot of trouble with constipation and after a colonoscopy a few years ago to make sure things were all OK, the specialist told me I could and should take it whenever I "felt the need". He said that I could take it several times a week without a problem. After all, it's magnesium, it's reasonably priced and fiber pills or powders only make me miserable.

I'm not sure I'd want to take it several times a week but now do take it weekly since beginning a high dose of vitamin D. The capsules are a lot easier to take but the liquid seems to work better.

My Mother always made sure to get rid of any constipation and to clean her bowels on a regular basis. She will be 80 next month. I guess she was/is on to something. It probably helps to eliminate poisons from her body.
