Just wondering if anyone uses muscle relaxers to help with fibro, and if they work for you.

I just talked with someone that got off of all of their pain meds, and are only useing muscle relaxers, and they said that it works for them.

I dont know much about them, but would love to hear about it.

    Thanks, Julie

    Hi Julie.
I was just taken off of my muscle relaxers (Zanaflex 4 mg). I was taking them at night with Lunesta and I couldn't tell if they were helping or not. I was told that I could also take them during the day, but I knew that I couldn't bare to take anything else that would make me tired during the day. I was also switched from Lunesta to Ambien CR...I cannot sleep at all during the night. I fall asleep just fine, just can't sleep pass 3-4 hours. I haven't filled the script just yet, keep hearing horror stories about Ambien.

As far as I am concerned (my situation) I do not think the muscle relaxers helped me.

    Good luck!

I take soma up to 4 x a day for pain adn to help relax some of the spasms I get in my legs. At first they really healped me to sleep at night but now they don't, well some times I get really sleepy and other times I don't feel like I have even taken them.
Sleep is some thing I really would like to be able to get more of. But this post is not about that. I still am taking strong pain meds with the soma and they work well together.

to help me sleep at night. I don't think it helps with FM pain much at all, but it does help me sleep & that is a blessing.

I can barely tolerate any meds, but I do on occasion take half of a flexeril......however, I do not find that it helps with fibro type pain at all - the mechanism behind fibro pain is not really the type that is helped by muscle relaxants; however, it does help a lot when nothing else does for the knots I get due to myofacial pain syndrome (which a lot of people with fibro and CFS also have) does also sometimes help me with sleep (but other times it just makes me feel knocked out but still awake)

I have tried other muscle relaxants with no luck and lots of side effects

I'm in agreement with Aunt Tammie, I think muscle relaxants can be super helpful with trigger point pain, not all over general Fibro pain, because it works differently than that.

I take Flexeril as needed for flare ups of trigger points (localized pain due to muscle knots/locking up and the referred pain) but doubt it would be all that useful on a regular (everyday) basis for me.

I have a handful of things I take as needed to manage my pain and it's happy addition to the toolkit.

I've been on muscle relaxers and they are fantastic! The preferred one for fibro, according to my specialist, is Zanaflex. It comes in a generic and is reasonable-price wise.

...but it does relax cramped muscles. I take Klonipin (clonazepam). It works for me to keep the cramps and spasms to a minimum.

Soma helps me when it really feels like it's muscle spasms. I think it also relaxes me a bit, but really doesn't make me sleepy or anything. I can take it during the day with no problems.

Flexiril didn't do a thing for me, neither did Robaxin.

Klonapin (as mentioned) isn't really a muscle relaxer per se, but it does relax everything. That is the only thing that helps me with my headaches. That doesn't put me to sleep either.

Darn I wish something would help. (off subject a bit)
