Narcotic pain killers

Hi, I just wondered if anyone has any idea which narcotic drugs are the strongest. I've heard of vicodin, percocet, morphine, and oxycontin being used for fibromyalgia. Are there others used to treat fibromyalgia pain? What is the order of weakest to strongest? I'm just curious where vicodin fits in with these drugs. That's what I take. My pain level changes a lot from day to day. On bad days, vicodin isn't very effective. But on good days, it controls the pain very well. Lately I've been worrying about the fibro getting worse because I seem to have more bad days than good. And I wonder if there are meds that may better control the pain if it continues to get worse.

    Thanks.

Have you asked your doc about the Duragesic Patch? It is transdermal fentynyl. Lot's of FM's find it works great for them. It's supposed to be VERY STRONG and VERY EFFECTIVE. Hope this helps.

Hi, I started out with Lortab, then doc gave me the Duragesic Patch and i couldn't tolerate it. It gave me bad headaches and nausea. Then I tried Oxycontin, at a very low dose, but i was supposed to take one every 12 hours and when i did, i got the headache again and nausea. I went to a Pain Clinic, and now i am on morphine, time release 30mg, and it helps. We have bumped it up to 60mg and i am able to tolerate that. Good Luck. Rose

Now that sounds like a good idea for someone like me. See, I have stomach problems. I have a hiatle (sp?) hernia and acid reflux disease. I get stomach pain if I take vicodin on an empty stomach. I hate that I have to eat with my pain meds because I'm trying to loose weight and it's next to impossible when you have to eat all the time. I'm definately going to ask my doctor about that patch. Are doctors reluctant to prescribe it?

I really appreciate your response. That sounds like just what I've been needing. :)

I READ THE LAST POST,ITS UP TO YOUR DOCTOR,I HAD TO BEG, TO GET LORTAB 10, WHICH IS THE HIGHEST DOSAGE OF LORTAB,BUT IT HELPS,IF YOUR DOCTOR WOULD GO ALONG WITH YOU, A MORPHINE PATCH WOULD BE GOOD,IT WOULD PROBABLY BE GOOD FOR A LOT OF US WITH FM, BUT HERE IN SPARTANBURG, S.C. WHERE I LIVE, YOU HAVE TO BE ALMOST ON YOUR DEATH BED TO GET A MORPHINE PUMP,NO YOU REALLY DO HAVE TO BE ON YOUR DEATH BED,BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO HAVE CANCER, I MEAN BAD CANCER TO GET MORPHINE. BUT GOOD LUCK,MAYBE YOUR DOC. ISN`T THAT BAD. OH YES, WHEN I STARTED ON MEDS FOR FM, I`VE LOST 20 LBS, I DO NOT HAVE AN APPETITE ANYMORE,I USE TO EAT LIKE A PIG,CRAVE SWEETS, NOW I DON`T EVEN LIKE THE SIGHT OF THEM,AND I DO GOOD TO EAT A BITE OF SOMETHING ONCE A DAY,ITS BEEN LIKE THIS FOR THE 6 MONTHS, SINCE I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH FM,I DON`T THINK IT WILL EVER COME BACK,HOPE NOT,I CAN GET BACK IN MY SIZE 12 JEANS AGAIN,I WAS ALMOST A 16 6 MONTHS AGO. WELL I HOPE YOU FIND WHATS BEST FOR YOU. VICODIN IS A MILD NARCOTIC, THE VERY BEST IS,BESIDE MORPHINE THAT IS,OXYCONTIN,, PERCOCET,AND LORTAB 10,WHICH IS A HIGH DOSAGE OF LORTAB. WELL HOPE I HELPED SOME, NJE

Dear Worldfalls: I have been using the pain patch for several moths and have tried many of the others that you have listed. I like it best as it doesn't seem to fog my judgement but the one problem I have with it is constipation so you may have to watch this. It is rather expensive but I think it works well for the chronic pain and the fibro. I wish you luck on your journey for relief from the pain as I know it is a very long journey. I also take warm pool theraphy and I have found it quite helpful with relieving muscle tension it does seem to increase the muscle spasms but less tension in the body is like a God send to me. I only go for a half hour 3x per week but for that half hour I am my human self again.
    Wish you success
    Sincerely Peach

I have been taking oxycontin with much success for a while now. They are expensive and I have lost my Insurance, so Dr is going to try Lorcet, because it is cheaper. But I know it is not as strong. I just hope it works. One word of advice. Never let your scrip run out. These type of drugs can't be called in or refilled and Ins Co's will put a limit on them. In NC anyway. I'm telling you from experience, you don't want a night of withdrawl from these.

I take Voltaren-XL, 100 mg. But on very . very bad days I take Oxycotin. I try to use the Flexeril and Volrtan combo as much as possible. It is very hard to come by narcotics these days.

To clear up a misconception..Duragesic Patches ARE NOT morphine. They are Fentanyl.

    NARCOTIC ANALGESICS

Tramadol (Ultram) is non-narcotic. It has the equilanalgesic dose as a Vicodin ES. MILD

OxyContin is long acting (apx. 12hrs) It is "codeine based." Oxy=Oxycodone Contin=Continuous STRONG

Kadian is a 24hr long acting morphine. STRONG

    MS Contin= MS=Morphine Sulfate Contin=continuous MS (12hrs)
Morphine Sulfate ER (Extended Release) is sometimes given as a generic form. STRONG

MSIR= Morphine Sulfate Immediate Release (4hrs) STRONG

Duragesic Patch: Fentanyl (*approximately*72hrs) depends on person VERY STRONG

Percocet/Vicodin/Darvon/Demerol/Darvocet/Vicuprofen/Pentazocine(Talwin)/etc... short acting MODERATE, except Percocet is strong.

Ultram (Tramadol) non-narcotic. It's equilanalgesic match is Vicodin ES.

Methadone is a synthetic opiate that heroin addicts use for maintenance. (apr24-36hrs) For chronic pain it is the best & tolerance does not raise rapidly, but it is highly addictive.

Levorphanol is an older narcotic. Cheaper than new, brand names and available in generic form.

I'm not sure it's so much a matter of strength as it is finding the drug which seems to work the best in one's system.

In my case the MSIR Morphine worked very well. Kadian, on the other hand, knocked me out for about 30 hours. When my pain was at its worst, taking one tablet of Morphine at night would help me sleep and I would awaken without pain. It worked so well that I didn't have to take it during the day. We are all different, though, and this regimen might now work well for others.

    Love, Mikie

    Hi worldfalls,
I can tell you that Perocet,Rococet,Oxycodone,Oxicontin, are some sronger than
hydrocodone.I have tried all af the above.(also morphine)
Another one that "I" take for fybro is Methadone. A pain specialist prescribed it. Unlike the ones above,it is not metabolized through the liver, but directly into the bloodstream. Unlike the others it stays in the bloodstream for 24hrs. It comes in 5mg. tabs and I takr 30 mg. a day."
And so you can cut back easily if needed. It works better than any I have tried. Hope i helped a little.

I've never taken anything stronger than Lortab 10's, except for demerol after surgeries. I had morphine after abdominal surgery but I vomited constantly, even with strong stuff for nausea. I cannot tolerate it.
There are quite a few days now where the Lortab is not cutting it, but I'm afraid to move on to something stronger.

I have been taking Darvon (200mg) for headaches for the last few weeks. I find it weak. There are little side-effects that I can find. It sometimes works for the headaches, sometimes not at all, sometimes just a little. Does not seem effective for any other pain. In fact it was only when I developed this month long headache problem that my doc even recommened any kind of pain killer at all.
