I have had serious insomnia lately. Today the doctor gave me a few different meds to try as follows:

    Elavil 10 mg at bedtime
    Restoril 15 mg bedtime
    Lunesta 3 mg bedtime

He said to experiment trying a different one each night.

Has anyone taken any of these meds to help sleep and what is your opinion.

I don't have any experience with Restoril or Lunesta, but Elavil helped some. It can also reduce pain at that dose. Maybe the combination will do the trick for you and you will get some sleep!

Just be aware that Elavil can be difficult to stop. It took me almost a month to get off my 10mg dose.

Were you taking 10 mg of Elavil at bedtime for sleep?

My doctor wants me to rotate what I take to avoid getting dependant on any one med. He said that is what they are doing now with sleep disorder patients.

    Hi PVlady,

I have been suffering from sleep problems for at least two years (due to pain). I suffer from severe chronic low back, pelvis, and right hip pain. This is on top of my fibro pain issues.

As of last friday I started taking Elavil 50mg (can try 100 if I don't sleep) at bedtime along with my pain med. To my own amazment I slept 8 hrs. that first night and very night since.

My Doc has told me that if the pain med and Elavil (50mg) don't work within a two hour period that I can then take an Ambien or another Elavil as well. Although I have yet to do this and have had good results with the Elavil alone.

I have in the past tried Lunesta but it left a terrible taste in my mouth for hours after I got up. Worse, I felt very groggy for several hours as well. But, it did make me sleep.

I think your doc is right telling you to give them a try. See which one works best for you and your own system. Good luck catching some ZZZZZZ's.

    Hope this info helps,

Yes, I took the Elavil for sleep, and my doctor hoped that it would also reduce pain. Like you, I had HORRIBLE insomnia, and Elavil didn't work very well for me. I was also (and still am) on Klonopin, so the combination helped me get SOME sleep, but not enough.

Oh yes, I have to tell you I just ran across some of my old medical notes, and I WAS on temazepam for a short time. That's the generic form of Restoril, so I didn't recognize the name at first.

The CFS specialist I had just started seeing noticed temazepam on my list of medications I was taking, and told me it was NOT a good med to be on. I wish I could remember what she said about it and the reason she didn't want me taking it anymore, but it was several years ago. I do remember it was probably the least effective sleep med I've tried. Wish I had better info for you!

I'm on Trazadone for sleep now and it works better than anything I've tried in the past.

I tried 10 mg Elavil last night and wound up taking more , I got some sleep but off and on..
Also took tiny bit of Ambien.
    I was pretty sleepy today.
Tonight I might go back to 10 mg
Anbien and add 1/2 Elavil if I can't sleep.
I am not surprised your doctor did not like Restoril, it is a Benzo class drug.
    I was so anxious
I went to bed at 2:30 was up at 4. Took more Elavil, up at 5:30.
At that point got dressed to leave house but decided to lie back down.
I hate this.[This Message was Edited on 05/25/2006]

i take lunesta 3 mgs at night and i can tell you that it is great. i take it every night. i have had great sucess on it. i think it the best sleeping pill i have ever tried. i also notice that i do not wake up fealing like i got drunk or something. i do know that my doctor paced the sleeping pills apart. like i would use one type for 4 nights and a different one the next four nights. i know that i took ambien for 4 nights and i had nightmares, realbad. i do not know if this was from tthe pill or not.

i would say try the lunesta for severalnights and see if it works for you.
