When I stopped taking Xanax years ago they wanted to give me neurontin to help ease me thru it. I did not take it. What is it supposed to do for fms, what dosage and what nasty little side affects can it bring. Also can you drink wine with it. I feel alot better knowing this site is here for us. What a relief to see your problems everywhere you look. Have a great day everyone!! Deb

Neurontin is an anti-seizure drug that has been found to be quite effective at relieving pain and aiding sleep in FMS patients. It can make you a little light headed and dizzy when you start taking it. Ask your doctor to start you on a low dose (100mg)at bed time, and slowly increase it. I have been taking it for a year and have found it to be the most effective medication that I take. I am presently on 300mg three times a day.

which says it is an anti-epilectic drug, it is used to assist in the control of siezures that have not responded to other drugs.

The side effects can be:- (wait for it)

Sleepiness, dizziness, unsteady gait, fatigue, eye flicker and double vision, headache, tremor, nausea and vomiting, rhinitis, weightgain, convolsions, dyspepsia, cough, nervousness and amnesia. Withdrawl of treatment has to be gradual.

I thought drugs were supposed to make you feel better.....
I wouldn`t think for a minute you could drink with this either.

Xanax is a short term treatment for anxiety. Part of the Diazepam family.

    Hope this helps you.

I`m glad you posted this question because I was going to post the same thing. I went to a pain specialist and she put me on three new meds. She put me on Percocet, tizanidine, and the Neurontin. I started the first two but haven`t started the Neurontin yet. I`m a little nervous about this one and also about started three powerful new drugs at once.
Anyone have any bad experiences with it? I hope it helps us both.

100mg at night. I only lasted 3 days! The side effects were so great. I was so dizzy and useless for the 3 days. I think if I was to try it again I would start it earlier in the evening for the first week. About 7pm and just plan on curling up on the couch. The morning effects were severe for me.

I've been on neurontin for over a year now and if I go 2 days or more without it my severe headaches come back, my back begins to hurt a lot worse, and just my over-all fibro is a lot worse. My husband was recently put on it also for the seizures he began to have back in January, which is what it was originally made for - seizures. But they have found so many other good uses for it, thank goodness. I do a lot better with it than without it. At first, I felt slightly dizzy, but after several days of taking it the dizziness went away. I am taking 300 mg 3x a day. Hope this helps you.

of the side effects Neurontin had to offer. Not a good drug for me. As with any drug, some react favorably to it, and some do not. Many here have really been helped by it.

If you've been prescribed 3 new meds that you've never taken before, it would make sense to me not to start all of them at the same time; otherwise if you *do* have a reaction to one of them, you won't know which one it is.

I started that med in 2000 as a mood stabilizer. It helps that, and it now helps my pain at bed. I only take this med at bedtime as it makes me sick to my stomach, and tired. (Dizzy)
I'm on 1200 mgs of it. It has helped my moods, and it helps my Fibro pain to sleep.
Some people cannot tolerate this at all during the day. I know I can't!
    Take care!

I do well on neurontin. I take 300 mg in the a.m., 800 mg. at 7:30 pm, and another 300 mg at bedtime. No side effects that I can discern (but with all the other symptoms we have, who can tell?)and believe it really helps my pain and sleep.

I have experienced daytime sleepiness when they've fiddled with my dosage. What I'm on now works for me. I'd never take it midday since I'm already so fatigued then.

i take 300mg at night for restless legs syndrome and haven't an episode since i started taking it...i think it does cause a bit of light-headedness in the beginning, which probably helps with sleeep, but that wears off eventually.

I started on neurontin in Dec 02. I initially started on 100 mg twice daily and I am now up to 600mg twice daily and I am supposed to increase to 3 times daily next week. I am sleeping very well on this. I no longer take 2 to 3 hour naps daily. In fact I almost never tak a nap anymore.

My only problem with this med is my doc thinks that it is a cure-all for fibro pain. I don't know how to convince him otherwise.

I, too, was hesitante to start on this medication. I did not want to mess with my brain chemicals, as so much else on my body doesn't work right, but I can honestly say that it has been helping so far.
Good luck and I hope that it works for you.

I started on neurontin-in mid December right before a cruise. My first-I could dance, take the tours, walk alot with very little terrible pain-It made me soooo tired the 1st three days and dizzy, but I adjusted to it-and keep in mind that I lost my balance nerves on the left due to brain surgery in 98.Anyhow- I can not live without this med-I take l00 mg 3xs a day, lately since this terrible snowy cold february I am having increased pain alittle so dr. said to up it if I want. I have been on klonapin lmg am and pm( and still am since 98) It helps my brain surgeon said with sensory overload and my tinnuitis, however all this time it has never, never helped with the pain-neurontin is the only med to ever give me this much relief-it helps people with neuropathy(nerve damage or nerve pain) and also works well they found out with FM. Give it a try, the side effects will diminish- I sleep 8 hrs and don't need a nap. Take care, darlee

    Hi Deb,

I started this last week to help me sleep at nite. The Flexeril only worked to let me sleep for about 2-3 weeks. My doctor said that I must have a high tollerance for meds. She said she ususlly starts patients off at 100mg at nite. She started me off at 300mg at nite to sleep. The first nite nothing. The second and 3rd nite migrane headachs (like i don't already have enough of those) took my med for the migrane. I wanted to give it a fair shot so I continued. The last three nites I have gotten the best sleep i have had in a long time. Only woke up for bathroom and right back to sleep. I used to be up from 3am on.

    good luck
    best wishes

Neurontin took me 3 tries and started with 50mg. worked my way up. It helped my concentration, stinging and stabbing pains, helped with sleep better in beginning. I is a antiseizure med as mentioned which some docs think we have a minor seizure disorder. It actually is the Gaba that is effective, which you can get at some health stores. I can`t remember all the pluses(ha-ha), but it seems to either give people headaches or helps them. For me it helped them. I believe it works on some of the neurotransmitters which are probably all a miss with fm. That is why it works for some and not others depending on what neurotransmitters need some re wiring. Take it slow it may give you balance problems but then seems to help with balance. Go figure!
