My pain specialist has tried me on everything for fibro but nothing has helped or I get side-affects.

So, last week he told me about a new pain patch called Butrans. I wear it for one week at a time, 10mg per hour are released. So far so good.

Is anyone out there ever heard of this or are you on it?

    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Hi luv2float,

My doctor gave me a perscription to try Butrans, but the co-pay for it was $400. So I didn't get it. I stayed with the MS Contin.

I know my non-experience with Butrans doesn't help you much; I'm thinking it might be too new of a drug, that others here haven't tried it yet. My doctor said it's brand new on the market.

Try Walmart's, SALONPAS; they work magic, just peel the cover off & stick right over where the pain is! I have pain in several areas so I just put it everywhere! Even cut one to smaller sizes since they really work for my severe pain... Less than $4 for 40 patches..

Really works well probably better than Butrans

I haven't heard of the Butrans patches - but I'm really happy to hear they're working for you!

I think the other patches brought up are not even in the same class - so really not comparable.

    From the Netdoctor:
BuTrans patches contain the active ingredient buprenorphine, which is a type of medicine called an opioid analgesic. It is a strong painkiller related to morphine... [and is used for] chronic moderate pain.

I'm on my 4th or 5th month of the BuTrans patch (this is a new opiate on the market, felt to be less addictive and with fewer withdrawals when discontinued) after trying (and continuing to take) ultram daily.

Two different pain doctors suggested both ultram and the BuTrans patch, after poor results with the more 'front line' in fibro treatment - gabapentin, lyrica...and the worse for me, cymbalta.

I started on the 5 mg patch, went up to the 10 mg, went off the 10 mg completely and have now gone back onto the 5 mg.

In addition to the fibro pain, I have chronic pain from a MVA/pedestrian (unfortunately, I was the pedestrian - ha!) and the thought was to quieten the pain from the accident.

I wasn't sure if the BuTrans was working, until I decided to take it off for a few days. I am pleased to say that I didn't suffer much in the way of withdrawal from it, but gosh, my pain intensified tremendously.

Some things that I don't like about the patch: not to become overly warm (like a hot bath) as it will release the medication faster; it can only be applied to the upper body and is somewhat in the way during massages; and, the stigma and issues around being prescribed an opiate.

Since the original post was in March, I'd be curious to see how effective you found this medication to be?
