So the last few days I have had this horrible off and on stomach pain. It started out slow and had many breaks in between but the pain was severe enough that I needed to sit down.
Now the pain is constant. And then the sharpness comes and goes. It is only in my stomach. I went to ER last night and he said either it was gastritis or pacreatitis.
after my lecture on why I am on the fentanyl patch. *rolls eyes*

So he wants to do a cat scan I drink all the baruim and then find out the machine is broke and not working *rolls eyes again*

So here I sit stomach hurting on protonix 2x a day and zantac at night. Pain is still the same not any better.

    It came on so sudden.

I do not drink, smoke,no nsaids at all, don't eat raw veggies, don't eat lots of fat foods or any of that.

I do vomit alot not by choice. Just stomach feels like it..

Stools are few and far between but that is normal for me.
No belching, bloating, gas or nothing like that.

    Just this horrible pain.

My gallbladder is out. I had one other attack like this and that is when they took my gall bladder.

Strange how when I am a nurse I have the answers for everyone but when it comes to me I am clueless..

I just don't get the gastritis. I don't have the usual signs or symptoms??

go grab some OTC Prilosec for sure. It really could help with the gastritis.

Raw diets can really promote gastritis in some of us.Weird isn't it? I have to be careful what raw I do and steam the rest. Lettuce is a thing that sets mine going.

    Do try the Prilosec.

You didn't mention follow up. If it is pancreatitis, you
should find that out soon so you can start treatment.
Fentanyl can cause nausea and constipation, might be that.
What makes it better if anything? Just eat lightly for now and perhaps the Prilosec will help.
This is all a bit strange isn't it?

So sorry you're feeling so terrible. I have stomach problems, but nothing like what you are describing.

Soda water?? I don't know sometimes it settles the stomach. Personally Prilosec makes mine hurt.

Levbid is good for stomach, but dries you up terrible and if you are like a lot of us, the sinus' are already a problem.

I have a question for you though. If I had an MRI done, (on my brain) would everything and anything show up? Or do they just look for something specific and that's it.

Also what is the diff between and MRI on it and a CT scan?

Let's see that's all I can think of right now, unless you know how to get rid of a headache (and everything else).??

    thanks. Hugs....

    thanks for your responses..

Cromwell: they have me on protonix 2x a day and zantac at night. I am still not getting relief and the pain has shifted to the the right side more then in the middle.

Pianawoman: I have been on the patch for about 5 months. this just started and it is way more then just nausea. It is some major pain.

Srh: ct scans are good for soft tissue like the abdomen they don't do well for the brain because of the bone. They pick up more artifact. Mri is the best to view the brain, spinal cord. Topomax was wonderful and stopped my headaches completely. But I had some weird side effects. Not everyone has those.

I went through a lot of pain for sometime. Dr. finally asked me to go to Cleveland Clinic....went trhough much there.....they thought it was in my head.....even had me take a mental test and was surprised that I passed it.

So my Dr. asked if he could do an exploratory. He was a fine surgeon that I had faith in and I said OK.

He found fibrous growths everywhere. Was wrapping around my ovaries......starting into the kidneys, spine etc. He said he was amazed that I worked during this. He said that I could not stand, sit or lay down or sneeze without pain. Dr. had tears in his eyes.

Just another "it is all in your head" story! Susan

This is what I have had since 1990 due to nerve damage in my stomach. It can cause nausea, fullness, vomiting, severe pain that mostly goes on all the time.

The one med that helped me was Reglan, taken 30 minutes before a meal to help your stomach muscles digest the food.

If the food is just sitting in your stomach, then you are getting more and more acid and that is what causes the pain. Too bad the machine was broken for the upper GI Series as that could have helped determine what the problem was.

They told me I had gastritis for a long time, but nothing they gave me worked, not Zantac, Prilosec, Tums, nothing gave me relief until I had been on the Reglan for about two weeks.

Not saying you have this, but it could be something to look into. It is not unusual for anyone to get motility problems with their stomach and it does cause the entire digestive system to slow down. I have been an inpatient in the hospital 2 x for this.

I think you need more tests, especially the upper GI and maybe even a scope of your stomach.

The stomach pain can be just terrible. I thought sometimes I would go nuts from it.

Good luck and hope you feel better.

Can you tell me if you are still taking Reglan? Are there any side effects to this drug you noticed. I am pretty sure I have gastroparesis but am afraid to take meds.

I have Reglan and have not taken it.

    Thanks for the feed-back

Yes I still take Reglan 30 minutes before I eat. For me the side effects are it makes you tired and can give you diarrhea or loose stools.

It has helped with the stomach pain I was having so much, that it is worth it, but I don't take it before bedtime anymore. If I don't eat solid food, I don't take it.

I've been on it since 1990, but then they had a new med called Cisapride out and I was on that one for about 5 or 6 years. They took that med off the market because it killed like 85 people. The Cisapride caused my FMS to be worse and made me really constipated. I tried to use the least amount of that med that I could get by with.

I actually think the Reglan is better than the Cisapride goes as far as side effects. Who needs to take a med that is going to make the FMS worse?

Like a dummy, I never thought to get off that Cisapride and go back on the Reglan until I couldn't get it anymore. I was also on Prilosec too, but that med didn't help me any. I ended up using Axid AR and Pepcid AC OTC.

So if you use liquid meals you can skip the Reglan and then end up just taking one or two pills a day and the side effects are less.

Hope that info helps. If you need anymore info post to me and I'll see that and answer you. I may forget to check on this post by tomorrow. lol Fibro fog...

There is more info about gastroparesis on the Diabetes Board here at Pro Health.

    I was thinking that too.

For instance in 04 I was a surrogate and we had a scheduled c section so I could not eat after 6pm so we went out to eat and then I had Nothing after 6 pm.
so I go in for the section and they gave me morphine which made me throw up so I threw up the entire meal from the night before. Mind you it was 9 am...

I will ask my doc. I am getting tired of tummy pain:(

where was all your pain>? In your stomach or all over?
I wish I could just get an entire body cat scan and get it over with lol.

I had severe stomach pain in fact it is how my fibro symptoms first started. I could not eat, I lost 15 lbs in a matter 2 weeks. I had an ultrasound, a catscan and an upper endoscopy. All were normal. I was prescribed a drug by the stomach specialist called Clidinium. He suggested the pain was my stomach muscles spasming from severe IBS. As I developed other symptoms he sent me to my rheumotologist who eventually diagnosed my fibro. The medication did work, but had to take it 3 times a day routinely. Does not work well just to take as symptoms arise. As I got the fibro under control, I was able to wean myself off of it.

I had the same problem. My doctor also said I had either gastritis or pancreatitis. He leaned more toward gastritis.

My "attack" started with severe pain after eating a certain type of pizza. I was fine when I went to bed, but woke up in the middle of the night with pain that sort of seemed like chest pain. I got up and it subsided, so I thought it was okay. I went back to bed and it started back, but was more of a stomach pain about two inches above my belly button, severe. My husband got me suppositories, Maalox, took Tagamet, all with no relief. I felt constipated and had just plain severe pain. I thought about going to the ER it was so bad. After two days with no relief, I called the doctor and they worked me in. The doctor said at first maybe it was gastritis or peptic ulcer and gave me Nexium. I felt better immediately after taking two pills. I just couldn't understand the thing about gastritis though. Ulcers, maybe, gastritis no. Too much pain. It was sort of like gallbladder pain, but a different type of pain. It didn't radiate around to my back like before. (my gallbladder is also out)

Anyway, I ate that same pizza and had that pain again, this time with vomiting. I had a return appointment with the doctor for this problem and told him. He was concerned about the possibility of pancreatitis. (I can't remember the terms he used, Tracy, forgive me. Brain fog!! I tried to look it up, but can't remember the testing he mentioned) He said if it happened one more time, he wanted to test for this. He said he would do some sort of scan, he didn't mention a barium scan. He mentioned some sort of scan I have never heard of but, of course, I have been out of the medical community a couple of years. It was some initials. Anyway, they run a scope in your biliary ducts (?) around your pancreas to see if there may be some new stones that have formed in it cau8sing you pseudo gallbladder type attacks. You can still form stones even though you no longer have a gallbladder! Three doctors have told me that, including him. Pretty scary.

I would check on this, as it might be your problem. It could explain everything. I don't know if the CT scan could show this though.

I hope you get some relief soon!

    Thank you all for responding..

Trischittak thanks for that info I will check into that.

Wake.. I chose to be a nurse at family practices and urgent cares. I wanted to see it all without the long shifts. I have been out of it since my second child was born with several birth defects that required 19 surgeries and counting. So I have been out since 2000. I just feel it is more then gastritis. It still comes and goes and hurts. The protonix helps a bit and zantac but it is not gone. I am on a small bland diet. We call the BRAT diet. bananas rice applesauce and toast stuff to no avail.
Appendicitis can have pain up there but I would have imagined it would have burst by now and my wbc's were not elevated. I am with you on the motility. I figured that long ago when my bowels were far between.

kdeenak thanks for that info. I will look into that and talk to doc. I think I just need to see a gastro. I really do not like them. When I saw one before he dismissed it then I ended up in ER and gallbladder out.
Then when my daughter needed one we almost lost her because of him. but that is another story.

Well I surely hope you don't have gastroparesis. Now to complicate things I have this awful GERD too and it is really severe now. I've had it all year and didn't seek medical advice until I got pneumonia from it on 4/6. :(

Good luck and I hope you get some relief soon.

I already have problems with diarrhea, so I can't take Zelnorm. They said on TV not to take it if you have diarrhea. The Reglan only makes me tired for about 45 minutes about an hour after I have eaten. Then I'm okay.

I know the Reglan breaks through the blood brain barrier. I'm a walking pharmacy anyway from all the different medical problems I have. lol Thanks for thinking of me. Good luck to you!

    Hugs to all,

Had Cat scan today.. remember I had the baruim 2 days ago?
well it was still there today.. And no I don't have constipation I just don't go but once or twice a week but they are always normal.

So the results were normal of course. Guess I am just a hypochondriac.
