Okay -- I'm loving that ZMA, but want to know

what is it, exactly? I ordered 2 bottles of it from the Store on this site and received them last weekend. I tried just one capsule the first night and it worked so well in helping me to sleep deeply for about 5 hours that I upped the dose to the full two caps for each of the next nights, with great results, I am happy to say -- a full 8 to 9 hours of deep sleep, without waking up feeling drugged. It is still doing wonderful in letting me get deep sleep -- I feel so rested when I wake up that I have even been able to increase my exercise a little.

Now, I have read the label and see lots of good things listed in the ingredients, but no explanation as to exactly what the ingredient called ZMA is. Is it a chemical or herb? Does it build up in the body to toxic levels the way some vitamins do? Is it addictive? Does anyone here know? I hope to continue taking this for a long time but am concerned that, like happened with so many previous meds, it might soon stop working or have adverse side effects. Has anyone had that happen to them with the ZMA?

Thanks to all for any information. For the time being, I am taking it on faith and enjoying the sleep that I am able to get for now. :)

As for as I know, its just what the label says, Zinc Asparate, Magnesium Asparate, and Vitamin B-6. I think the ZMA stands for the ingredients, plus the Asparate.

I have been taking it since Feburary this year, and I can attest to what you just said, I have not slept this well in my entire life! I sleep at least 7-8 hours of deep restful sleep.

It also seems to help with the pain too.

I am sure it can't be addictive, as it is only two minerals and a vitamin. But if it is, well I will take it anyway!

Nothing has ever helped me sleep like this in my life, and I have taken some heavy duty drugs off and on for years to sleep.

The longer I am taking it, the better I sleep. I take two every night. My husband takes three.

I think Mel has taken ZMA for a year and a half now, he will be along to comment on your post too. He is the one who got me to try it. I bless him every morning and night for insisting that I try it.

If I find out anything more, I will post it for you.

    Sweet dreams!

PS, Heres an article from Pro Health on ZMA, this is interesting!

ZMA Zinc-Magnesium Supplement Shown to Increase Strength in NCAA Football Players

June 2, 1999--Lorrie Brilla, Ph.D., a sports performance researcher at Western Washington University, announced today that a novel zinc-magnesium supplement called "ZMA" significantly increased muscle strength in NCAA football players.
The ZMA study results are being presented today by Dr. Brilla at the 46th Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Seattle, Washington. These findings were recently published in the official ACSM journal, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, Vol. 31, No. 5.

According to Dr. Brilla, "A group of competitive NCAA football players who took ZMA nightly during an 8 week spring training program had 2.5 times greater muscle strength gains than a placebo group. Pre and post leg strength measurements were made using a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer." The strength of the ZMA group increased by 11.6% compared to only a 4.6% increase in the placebo group.

"The muscle strength increases may have been mediated by the anabolic hormone increases in the ZMA group. The ZMA group had 30% increases in free and total testosterone levels compared to 10% decreases in the placebo group. The ZMA group also had a slight increase in insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels compared to a 20% decrease in the placebo group. This study shows that anabolic hormone and muscle strength increases can be induced in already strength-trained athletes by using a novel zinc-magnesium preparation", said Brilla.

According to co-investigator Victor Conte, Director of BALCO Laboratories in Burlingame, California, "ZMA is the only all natural product that has been clinically proven to increase anabolic hormone levels and muscle strength in trained athletes." The dosage of ZMA used in the study contains 30 mg of zinc and 450 mg of magnesium. "There has never been a study reporting adverse health effects at these moderate dosages." said Conte.

John Gamble, strength and conditioning coach for the Miami Dolphins, reports that "players using ZMA are cramping much less and seem to be getting a more deep and restful sleep which enhances their recovery".

sleep and muscle support with zinc & magnesium

ZMA™ is a synergistic combination of zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6, specifically designed to enhance muscle strength, endurance, healing and recovery from exercise. Taken before bedtime, ZMA™ promotes deeper, more restful sleep, which is when maximum healing, and muscle growth takes place. ZMA™ consists of a unique covalently-bound complex of zinc, magnesium and aspartic acid, which enables the magnesium and zinc to reach the bloodstream at the same time so that the desired synergistic effect can be obtained.
